Overview

Buffalo Bill SRA offers a unique blend of Western history and Nebraska’s natural beauty. Situated along the banks of the North Platte River, this recreation area serves as a living tribute to the legendary frontiersman Buffalo Bill Cody. It is a quiet destination where the legacy of the Wild West meets modern outdoor recreation. Travelers often find it a peaceful, shaded reprieve from the long stretches of travel across the Great Plains, offering a chance to slow down and enjoy the riverfront atmosphere.

Location & Surroundings

Located just northwest of North Platte, Nebraska, the park is tucked away from the noise of the city while remaining incredibly easy to access from Interstate 80. It sits immediately adjacent to the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, providing a lush landscape filled with mature cottonwood trees and scenic water views. The surrounding area features the expansive horizons of the high plains, making it a picturesque and convenient basecamp for exploring the regional heritage of central Nebraska.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a well-organized layout with 23 electrical hookups that accommodate 20, 30, and 50-amp service. For those who prefer a more rustic experience, there are also numerous primitive camping spots available throughout the grounds. Facilities include a modern shower house and standard vault toilets to ensure comfort during your stay. A convenient dump station and potable water are located on-site, along with a boat ramp for those eager to launch a canoe or kayak into the slow-moving river currents.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for most visitors is the neighboring Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, where you can tour Cody’s elaborate 1886 mansion and historical barn. Nature lovers can spend time on the water, as the river is a popular spot for fishing, tubing, and seasonal bird watching. Additionally, a short drive into town leads to the Golden Spike Tower, which overlooks the massive Bailey Yard, providing a fascinating look at the incredible scale of American rail transport and logistics.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation area is ideal for history buffs and travelers seeking a quiet, natural setting that feels deeply connected to the American West. It is perfectly suited for those who prefer smaller, scenic campgrounds that offer plenty of space and shade compared to standard roadside parks. Fun little area to check out, if you like Buffalo Bill! We also found a geocache while there! It was fun to walk around and see the house and the fields that make up the ranch

We did not get a chance to see the building due to the fact that they are closed on Mondays. Though we did walk around got a few great pics love the place.

A historical home that is beautifully designed and well maintained. Pictures of Buffalo Bill's family and friends are on display throughout his home. The 148 ft. barn has Buffalo Bill posters, wagons, carriages, saddles, pictures of Annie Oakley, a diorama of Buffalo Bills's family etc.

Wow! North Platte knows how to do parks! Huge trees, wild animals (caged, not roaming around), carnival rides, food, .... We had a blast!

There is a fee for admission ($35 and up for a day pass as I recall), which is higher for out of state visitors, so I basically drove through the parking lot and moved along. The rodeo arena next door however, had an event going on with free entry, so opted for that. I would have liked to have learned more about Buffalo Bill. Perhaps some historical marker signage closer to the road.

Interesting historical mansion with lots of photos and memorabilia of Wiiliam F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Apparently, he earned his name for slaughtering over 4,000 buffalos. Thereafter, he was employed as an army soldier, somewhere in his life, as a showman. He performed wild west shows throughout the country and became very successful.

Wonderful experience. Well maintained inside the house and out. Automatically felt right at home with the friendliness of the hostess and even the groundskeepers. I recommend this to anyone passing through North Platte. It's only about 5 to10 minutes from I-80, but oh, so worth the stop! Great job, Nebraska! We'll be back!!

The first time we visited was yesterday after just having been on a family roadtrip to Yellowstone, Glacier and many other places of history. The place is beautiful and the staff was awesome!! History lesson was fabulous and added even more value to our trip then before we stopped :) would def recommend!
