Burro Creek (BLM)
Overview
Burro Creek Recreation Site offers a unique desert oasis experience within a dramatic canyon setting. Managed by the BLM, this campground sits at the transition zone between the Sonoran and Mohave Deserts, providing a lush riparian habitat in the middle of rugged Arizona terrain. It is a favored stop for those traveling between Phoenix and Las Vegas who want to experience the quiet beauty of a flowing creek and towering saguaro cacti in a well-maintained setting.
Location & Surroundings
Situated off Highway 93 near Wikieup, the park is nestled within a 1,000-foot-deep canyon carved by the perennial waters of Burro Creek. The surrounding landscape features ancient volcanic cliffs and diverse desert flora that change colors with the shifting sunlight. Because of its specific geographic position, the site provides a scenic sanctuary for travelers navigating the long, open stretches of the Arizona high desert, offering immediate access to the water's edge.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a developed campground that caters primarily to dry campers and boondockers. The park features paved interior roads and sites equipped with concrete pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. While there are no individual utility hookups at the sites, visitors have access to potable water and a dump station, which are essential for self-contained RVers. The facility also includes clean restrooms with flush toilets, providing a comfortable balance between rugged wilderness and necessary convenience.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts frequent the area for rockhounding, as the canyon is famous among collectors for its deposits of blue agate and jasper. Hiking trails lead visitors down to the creek bed, where bird watching is a popular pastime due to the variety of migratory species attracted to the water. The remote location away from major city lights makes it an exceptional spot for stargazing, offering incredibly clear views of the night sky from the comfort of your campsite.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a natural setting over high-end resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for nature photographers, amateur geologists, and travelers seeking a peaceful, primitive experience without being completely off the grid. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of a desert breeze and waking up surrounded by dramatic canyon walls, Burro Creek provides an authentic Arizona camping experience for your next road trip.

Nice little campground for $14 per night with flush toilets. There is a little road noise from the highway but not bad. Campsites vary in size. Camp Host was friendly and helpful.

Burro Creek Is a Nice and Peaceful Campground NW of Wikiup, AZ; quick note, don’t buy gas there, there’s 3 stations and all were like $1.90 more that if you went down to Wickenburg (36 miles SE). The road into the CG is paved and maybe a ½ mile and drops into the Burro Creek canyon or gorge and the CG parallels the Burro Creek. The roads inside are dirt and wide enough for any rig; there were some larger TT and 5Ws and I didn’t see anyone having a problem. Sites have picnic table and fire-ring and some sites even had canopies over the picnic table. There are several flush toilets around the CG as well as a few water faucets, and there is a tank-fill faucet at the 2-sided dump station. There are numerous garbage bins and I did notice one aluminum recycle bin. The camp host was great, friendly and accommodating, she kept a good eye on stuff. They come in and clean the bathrooms and take the trash a couple of times a week. The bathrooms were very clean and well lit at night. It’s a great area with many desert backroads to trek. We’d definitely come back here again.

Nice campgrounds for tent camping or those with smaller rv's or travel trailers. This campsites are smaller than normal but most appear to be mostly level. The water is not potable at this time (June 2025), so come prepared. The washrooms are modern and clean. This campground is near US 93, but road noise is not noticeable mostly. This is an excellent overnight spot or dark sky visit. Cost is just $14.

Beautiful campground with shaded picnic tables, flush toilets, dump station. Fees charged. Water is not potable according to posted sign as of June 2025. Creek has deep pools of water. Very birdy. Bighorn sheep on cliffs across the canyon.

This is a no frills but fabulous back to nature campground. Dry camping but they do have restrooms. Beautiful canyon and a nice wall to the creek.

Marvelous setting with quite a view. Narrow roads are Not meant for big rigs. Flush toilet, dump station. No potable water. This one is a gem!

Campground was great, not so many people there, and low light pollution. I loved how there was running water with flushable toilets. And surprisingly had cell service (T-Mobile). Would definitely come back

Very nice well kept campground. There is no potable water available to fill your camper, but there is rinse water and a dump site. Burrow creek has a good amount of water and offers great views. This is not a full hook up and the sites are close to each other. When we were there many campers felt the need to run their generators 24/7 which sucks, but not a negative reflection on the campground. There are regular bathrooms with running water that are very clean and well kept.
