Burt Lake

Overview

Burt Lake State Park offers a classic Northern Michigan camping experience on the sandy southern shore of one of the state's largest inland lakes. This 400-acre park provides a serene escape for travelers who appreciate easy water access and a relaxed natural environment. With its well-maintained grounds and proximity to the village of Indian River, it serves as a central hub for exploring the diverse landscapes of the Tip of the Mitt region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of Cheboygan County, the park is nestled between the Sturgeon River and the expansive waters of Burt Lake. The surrounding area is defined by the famous Inland Waterway, a 38-mile chain of lakes and rivers that connects Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. This strategic location provides a lush, forested backdrop that changes beautifully with the seasons, making it a prime spot for nature photography and birdwatching.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 306 modern campsites that offer 20, 30, and 50-amp electrical service to accommodate various RV sizes. Guests have access to modern restrooms and a sanitation station. Key amenities include:

  • Sandy swimming beach with 2,000 feet of shoreline.
  • A boat launch providing access to the Inland Waterway.
  • On-site playground and volleyball courts for family recreation.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can spend their days boating across the lake or paddling the nearby Sturgeon River for a faster-paced adventure. Just minutes away, visitors can explore the Cross in the Woods National Shrine or hike the local trail systems. For those willing to drive a short distance north, the historic charm and ferry docks of Mackinaw City offer a perfect day trip destination before returning to the quiet shores of Burt Lake.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for boating enthusiasts and families who want a traditional lakeside vacation with modern conveniences. Because the sites are level and well-spaced, it is also a welcoming choice for big-rig owners seeking a reliable home base in Northern Michigan. If you prioritize water activities and a friendly, community-oriented atmosphere over remote isolation, Burt Lake State Park provides the perfect balance for your next RV trip.

Hubby and I went here while on vacation. It was a very nice campground. We had such a beautiful view of the lake. There is a beach with a volleyball court. Restrooms were very clean and it was very quiet and peaceful

This was our first time here at Burt Lake State Park. The ranger that checked us in, Lance was great. He seen our camper and recommended switching to a better site. We have a 35 foot 5th Wheel, and had plenty of room. Lucked out and caught the Northern Lights on the first night. Electric only here so fill your fresh water tank on the way in. Some sites are paved but most are grass/sandy. Burt Lake is really big which made the Northern Lights awesome! Bathrooms are old but clean enough. Beach is clean, mostly sandy with a few small rocks. There is an area by the beach to walk your dog with bags and a trash can. The park is close to Mackinac city, Petoskey and Cheboygan. There is a boat launch, some people were mooring their boats off shore. We like this park a lot!

Beautiful campground and beach. Sites are large and spaced out. Bathrooms are good. Great location and close to fun activities and resturants. Staff is friendly. Lots of trails near by and many outdoor activities to do. Will definitely come back again.

Nice park, bathrooms were clean, the people were super nice, it was really quiet at night which we love! No mosquitoes that we saw at all, the beach area is a little rough but not dirty, which is a plus! They have swings, a volleyball net, baseball area and a slide. Paved roads so kids can ride bikes.

Updating my review. Burt Lake is one of the best places I've camped at! The restrooms and showers are clean (I believe there are four of them and are in walking distance). The beach is clean and clear, nice sand and a great place to look for Petoskey stones and cool rocks. There are lots of things to do like river rafting and mini golf across the street, walking distance from town and trails in the woods. It's also a good 20 to 30 minutes away from places like Mackinaw City, Petoskey, etc. The only thing is if you're used to rustic camping or tent camping there are huge campers everywhere, everyone's really close to each other, so not a whole lot of privacy 😅

We love Burt Lake! Nice beach, and there is a section for your dogs also. I wish they would update the bathrooms like other state parks. It would be nice to have individual showers, too. The lots are pretty big, and you can even park parallel to the road. I wish they had more signs with the posted speed limit. Too many people speed through the camping area. Even some of the Rangers on the john deers. It would be nice if they could make an actual park for the kids to play at. Just a couple of swings and an old-school metal slide that reaches the temperature of the sun on a hot day.

Very nice park! There are around 300 camping spots. Great Lake and beach. There is even an area for dogs to go down and play in the water. There are plenty of walking trails. The park is walking distance to a grocery store AND a coffee shop.

We absolutely loved the campground. From the beach, ranger led activities to the baseball field. It was great! My one thing with kids is the speed limits that very few follow. It was 10 speed limit but some were going 15-25 and unaware of any children at play. Like most people didn’t even see me tell them to slowdown. I had to have my kids put their bikes away because I didn’t feel it was safe unless I was with them while playing. We will definitely be back for the beach but not to camp unless speed signs are put up. Someone is going to get hurt or killed. I did speak with the ranger at the front desk about my concerns. Put up speed signs asap! People are driving way too fast in the campground!

We camped with friends and rented six sites. Some of the sites were great for our campers. Some of the sites were on weird angles and more difficult to maneuver. Overall, we really liked the park. Restrooms were clean and not a far walk from wherever you were in the park. The camp host was great with the kids. The beach was lovely with shallow water (waist deep on an adult) and a sandy bottom for most of the swim area. Boats can anchor right in the shallow water and you can wade to shore easily.
