Buryanek Recreation Area
Overview
Buryanek Recreation Area offers a peaceful retreat nestled along the western shores of the Missouri River in South Dakota. This state-managed park provides a serene atmosphere for travelers looking to escape the bustle of more commercialized regions. As a key destination within the Lake Francis Case reservoir system, it serves as a gateway to some of the most impressive water views in the Great Plains, balancing natural beauty with essential comforts for modern RVers.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 18 miles north of Burke, SD, the park is characterized by its dramatic position overlooking the expansive waters of the Missouri River. The surrounding landscape features the rugged river bluffs and rolling grasslands typical of the South Dakota prairie. This remote setting ensures quiet nights and dark skies, making it an ideal spot for those who appreciate a rustic, outdoor-centric environment without sacrificing road accessibility for larger rigs.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features dozens of campsites, many of which provide electrical hookups to accommodate various RV sizes. Guests have access to modern bathhouses with showers, a convenient dump station, and potable water. For those traveling with watercraft, the boat ramp and large parking area are standout features. Additionally, the park includes a fish cleaning station, a playground for families, and well-maintained picnic shelters that offer shade during the warm summer months.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw here is Lake Francis Case, a massive reservoir renowned for premier fishing opportunities. Anglers often visit to target walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. Beyond the water, the area is excellent for bird watching and photography, particularly during the migration seasons. Visitors can also explore the small-town charm of nearby Burke, which offers local dining and essential supplies, or venture further to discover other scenic points along the Lewis and Clark Trail.
Who This Park Is Best For
This recreation area is a perfect fit for dedicated anglers and boating enthusiasts who want direct access to the river. It is also ideal for families seeking a quiet, nature-focused vacation away from the noise of interstate highways. If you value a lakeside experience with plenty of room to breathe and a focus on outdoor recreation rather than resort-style luxuries, Buryanek will suit your travel style perfectly.

A true hidden gem in South Dakota. Hidden through two cow lots in the bluff on the Missouri river, and far enough away from everything there is no noise pollution or light pollution. On a clear night you can see the arms of the Milky Way galaxy and a ton of other constilations. Amazing fishing with a boat dock and cleaning station. This state park campground is my all time go to. Only downside is that other than walking the beach there are no hiking trails. 10/10 highly recommended.

This is a beautiful park. We stopped in to go fishing but I was way to windy for that. So walked the shore looking for rocks and took in the beautiful views.they do have camp sites and bathrooms. Picnic tables are covered for shade.

My favorite campground. Awesome State Park and well off the beaten path. One of only 2 places in eastern South Dakota where we don’t hear any fireworks. Great place to bring your dogs. Be prepared for high temperatures. Complete with several places you can go swimming or fishing. Cabins are available too but there are only a few. BYOS = Bring your own shade. There isn’t an abundance of shade here.

Excellent location on the river. Staff work hard to keep the grounds and amenities spotless. We reserved the G3 area for the entire week prior to memorial day 2023. We caught tons of Walleyes and Bass and will likely add this one of our annual obsessions. See ya again next year.

We stayed at cabin 2. It was very nice. There was plenty of shade most of the day. The bathrooms were close and clean and had been updated recently. We really enjoyed our stay!
