Cabwaylingo State Forest
Overview
Cabwaylingo State Forest encompasses over 8,000 acres of lush, dense woodland in the heart of southern West Virginia. Named after the four surrounding counties—Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, and Mingo—this destination offers a historic forest experience established during the 1930s. The park is deeply rooted in its Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) heritage, featuring hand-carved stone structures and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it a standout choice for travelers seeking a genuine connection with nature in a quiet setting.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in Dunlow, West Virginia, the forest is defined by its rugged Appalachian terrain and heavy timberlands. The environment is deeply secluded, providing a quiet escape far from the hum of interstate traffic. The landscape is characterized by the winding Twelvepole Creek, which carves through the forest floor and provides a scenic backdrop for the various campgrounds and recreational areas distributed throughout the park's expansive acreage.
Amenities & Park Features
The forest offers two main camping areas suitable for RVers looking for different levels of utility. The Spruce Creek Campground is the primary choice for those seeking comfort, as it features sites equipped with full hookups. For a more traditional experience, the Tick Ridge Campground provides electric hookups in a scenic ridge-top setting. On-site facilities include modern bathhouses, multiple picnic shelters for group gatherings, and playgrounds for families. These features ensure a comfortable stay while immersed in the scenic woodland environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers often visit specifically for the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System, which recently expanded to include a dedicated trail head within the forest for ATVs and UTVs. Nature enthusiasts can spend their days birdwatching or exploring the McClintic Group Camp area. History buffs will appreciate the restored fire tower and the various CCC-built stone cabins that dot the landscape, showcasing the architectural legacy of the Great Depression era while exploring twelve miles of hiking trails.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for off-road enthusiasts and families who enjoy a rustic, slower pace of life. It is particularly well-suited for RVers who prioritize outdoor recreation and trail access over luxury resort amenities. If you are looking for a tranquil woodland retreat where you can disconnect from technology and reconnect with the Appalachian wilderness, Cabwaylingo provides the perfect setting for your next West Virginia road trip.

What a great idea West Virginia has with creating such awesome trails throughout their State Forests. Only $50 for a twelve month pass. Very well groomed trails.

Great Forest! Really Enjoy It Here. We've Stayed Here About 5 Times Now! The Cabins Are Beautiful And Well Up To Date! The Staff Is Friendly. The Area Is Beautiful With So Much To Do! Love Nature Walks,Photography And Just Being Able To Explore. Good Fishing And Places To Just Wade In The Creek. The Playgrounds Are Nice And So Are The Shelters.

Stayed in Cabin #9 this past week. Fantastic is an understatement. We rode on the HMT four days and put 140 miles on our SxS. Could not believe how nice the cabin was! Cleanest place we have stayed in a long time. Highly recommend. Pet friendly! Will be back very soon!

For me it's been a gathering place for our family. We have been staying there every year for 23 years. We play horseshoes, grill, and sit by a campfire. It's a beautiful wooded area. Great place for hikes and walks. We usually bring bicycles too.
