Cache Creek Canyon

Overview

Cache Creek Canyon Regional Park offers a rugged getaway in the heart of Northern California's wilderness. Located along the scenic Cache Creek, this park provides a true escape for those who value natural beauty over modern luxuries. It serves as a gateway to the Capay Valley, offering a serene environment where the sound of the rushing river defines the experience. Visitors come here to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the outdoors in a scenic canyon setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Rumsey, California, the park is nestled within a dramatic canyon characterized by steep cliffs and lush oak woodlands. The Cache Creek flows directly through the area, creating a lush riparian corridor that contrasts with the dry, golden hillsides. It is an ideal spot for those traveling along Highway 16, providing access to the secluded landscapes of Yolo County. The surrounding area is relatively undeveloped, ensuring that nights are dark and the stargazing opportunities are exceptional.

Amenities & Park Features

This park is best described as a primitive camping destination, so RVers should come prepared for a dry camping experience. While there are no electrical or sewer hookups at the sites, the park offers essential facilities including vault toilets and shared picnic areas. Each site typically includes a fire ring and a heavy-duty picnic table. It is important to note that the roads within the park can be narrow; therefore, smaller rigs, truck campers, or camper vans often find the navigation easier than large motorhomes.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the river, which is popular for whitewater rafting and kayaking during the spring and summer months. Hikers will enjoy the Blue Ridge Trail, which offers challenging elevation gains and panoramic views of the canyon below. For a more relaxed afternoon, the creek provides several spots for swimming and wading. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep an eye out for bald eagles, black bears, and tule elk that are known to frequent the canyon walls and riverbanks.

Who This Park Is Best For

Cache Creek Canyon is ideal for adventure-seeking RVers who enjoy boondocking and self-sufficient travel. It appeals to outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize trail access and river activities over resort-style amenities like pools or Wi-Fi. If you are looking for a quiet, nature-focused retreat where you can fall asleep to the sound of moving water, this park is a perfect match. It is a favorite for those wanting to explore the more wild and untamed side of the California interior.

I would give the park a five but we had unruly campers next to us that partied till 445 in the morning playing their Latino music, drinking and playing cards for money. It wasn't till one person won all the money that the music shut off and they went to bed. The RV dump was full when we left so we couldn't dump the tanks in the trailer The scenery is beautiful and I saw my first walking stick bug. The bathrooms are well kept. We will be back again soon.

Cache creek Canyon was good place to camp with family. The Creek waters for swimming we're good the camp sites we're all green and lots of shade to cool down. There was no running water on camp site and showers were few feet away. I give this camp site a 4 Star.

Clean, spacious, easy weekend.... a bit far out there, but I guess that is the point. Water was really low, but that is the rains fault. Great place to get away.

I have went here almost every year for 12 years and it has been fun except this year. I went there last week and the water level is low and the lowest its ever been, which is not the park's fault. Because of the low water level there were a lot of dead fish, which is very unsanitary and there was no warning about it in the website or the park. It also looked like the park rangers were trying to cover the fact that there were dead fish because we checked the beach area multiple times and one of the last times we checked, most of the fish were gone. I emailed YoloCountyParks a week ago and they haven't responded which adds to the fact that they might be trying to cover this up. Me and my family reserved 4 days and we had to cut the trip in half due to the fact that we couldn't get in the water. If only there was a warning, we could of prevented getting excited for no reason. I recommend not going there for at least this year, if you planned on getting in the water.

The river rafting could've been better if there weren't so many big rocks in it where river-rafting people were to be not getting stuck on it...lol
