Camp-A-While

Overview

Camp-A-While offers a classic Pennsylvania camping experience tucked within the scenic Mahantango Valley of Schuylkill County. This family-owned park emphasizes a peaceful, wooded atmosphere that allows travelers to disconnect from the bustle of highway life. Spread across a gently sloping mountainside, the park provides a mix of sun and shade, creating a natural retreat that feels worlds away from the city while remaining accessible to major regional routes.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Hegins, PA, the park is surrounded by the rolling hills and fertile farmland of the Pennsylvania Dutch Countryside. The location is ideal for those who appreciate quiet evenings and the sound of wind through mature trees. Unlike some parks located directly adjacent to noisy interstates, Camp-A-While offers a more secluded environment where the rural landscape of central Pennsylvania takes center stage for visitors.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for both short-term stays and seasonal visitors looking for reliability. Guests can enjoy several features during their stay:

  • Full-hookup RV sites including water, sewer, and electricity.
  • A refreshing swimming pool and a dedicated playground for children.
  • On-site laundry facilities and clean bathhouse structures.
  • A camp store providing essentials and propane refills.

These facilities ensure that guests have everything necessary for a comfortable stay while enjoying the rustic surroundings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

One of the biggest draws to the area is the proximity to Knoebels Amusement Resort, a world-famous, admission-free park located just a short drive away. History buffs often visit the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine or the historic Yuengling Brewery in nearby Pottsville. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore local state parks or take a scenic drive through the surrounding valleys to visit local wineries and farmers' markets that define the region's heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for families and couples looking for a traditional camping experience centered on nature and simplicity. It appeals to RVers who prefer a quiet, shaded environment over a high-traffic, paved resort. If you are traveling with children or simply want a home base for exploring the unique attractions of Schuylkill County, this park offers a relaxed and friendly community vibe that makes every guest feel at home.

I really wanted to like this place as the owners were very friendly and helpful and the grounds seem so well maintained and enjoyable. A serious problem for me was the main road that is approximately 100 yd from the primitive campsites. Unfortunately right at that location is a steep hill and big rig truckers are constantly running throughout the night. If they're not using their Extremely Loud Jake brakes going down the hill they are very slowly climbing the hill making unbelievably loud noise. I did not get any sleep through the night. I thought I might use my earplugs but I could not sleep with them. I don't know how the trailer campers manage it as I'm sure the noise can penetrate those walls. Once there was enough light in the morning I packed up and left. Unfortunately this is one place I will not return to. I had checked the reviews and unfortunately missed any complaints on noise so I wonder if those comments somehow got buried.

Great welcome by Rob and his wife and a nice evening with Elvis, a very good performer!!! We we're impressed by their website and the activities they offer their customers all season long. Definitely worth a visit and perfectly situated so close to I81! A warm thank you to both of you❣️

Great campground for over night or several days. There is a well kept extremely large pool and a very well maintained hiking trail. The campground is well maintained and the seasonal sites appear to be separate from the fairly large wooded daily sites. The owners are very friendly and the selection of local beef and pork meat is both amazing and delicious. We enjoyed our time at Camp-A-While.

Nice campground- well maintained- but there are a few things to know- first- the noise from the tractor trailers going up and down the mountain is extreme- like louder than any road traffic I have heard- using the engine brake on the way down and shifting like 8-10 times as they climb- also 90% of sites are seasonal- not only does that limit site choice- but everyone seems to know everyone except for you. If I could escape the noise somehow I would definitely go back- but there is no escaping the noise and the sites further away from the road are all seasonal :-(

We loved our campsite overlooking Pine Creek and the birds that were singing from the trees (we are birders and loved hearing the orioles and warblers). We also walked and enjoyed the mile-long nature trail, which is well maintained. We were impressed with the beauty of the surroundings, the cleanliness of the facilities, and the provisions in the store. The owners, Michelle and Rob, are kind and clearly work hard to keep the place running smoothly, and they obviously care about their campers' experience, while establishing a sense of comfort and community for anyone who visits. We highly recommend this campground!

5 stars all the way. This is our 5th year there as a seasonal. My family and I are so grateful to have such amazing owners who go above and beyond to make your camping experience a great one. I must add they have so many fun things for kids and family’s. I will never ever leave.❤️

We stop here on our way back & forth from Alabama to New England. We've been here over night 4 times now and love it. This last time we were trying to get west of hurricane Henri and the owners allowed us to arrive a little early. They are friendly and accommodating. The campground is quiet, neat and well kept. There 8s a nice trail through the woods for dog walking. My dog & I saw deer and heard Turkeys. Great place. I would highly recommend it.
