Canyon Ferry/Hellgate

Overview

Canyon Ferry Lake serves as one of Montana's premier outdoor destinations, and the Hellgate area is a central hub for those seeking a **scenic lakeside setting**. Managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, this recreation site offers a balanced mix of natural beauty and essential facilities for RV travelers. It provides a unique opportunity to camp directly on the shores of the state's third-largest body of water, making it a frequent choice for those who value **waterfront access** and expansive views of the Big Sky landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Located roughly 30 miles east of Helena, Hellgate is nestled along the eastern banks of the Canyon Ferry Reservoir. The park is framed by the towering **Big Belt Mountains**, which provide a dramatic silhouette against the horizon at sunset. The surrounding geography consists of rolling grasslands and rugged shorelines, offering a sense of vastness and solitude. This location is perfect for travelers who want to escape the city while remaining within a **short driving distance** of Montana's capital and its historic amenities.

Amenities & Park Features

Hellgate is well-regarded for its functional infrastructure, particularly for those bringing watercraft. The park features **developed boat ramps** and a large breakwater to protect moored vessels from the wind. While the experience is more rustic than a private resort, visitors have access to **electric hookups** at many sites, alongside communal potable water and vault toilets. The spacious layouts are designed to accommodate various rig sizes, and the inclusion of large picnic shelters makes it an excellent choice for those traveling with a larger group.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The reservoir itself is the star attraction, offering world-class opportunities for **walleye and trout fishing**. Boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding are popular daily activities for residents and visitors alike. Just a short drive away, you can explore the **Gates of the Mountains Wilderness**, where the Missouri River cuts through spectacular limestone cliffs. In nearby Helena, travelers can visit the Montana State Capitol or hike the extensive trail systems of Mount Helena for panoramic views of the entire valley.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for **active water sports enthusiasts** and dedicated anglers who want to be steps away from the boat launch. It is also well-suited for families who enjoy a traditional camping atmosphere focused on outdoor recreation rather than luxury amenities. If you prefer a **natural, lake-focused environment** and the ability to witness incredible Montana wildlife and star-filled skies, Hellgate provides a high-quality, authentic experience for your RV journey.

This is a dry campground, but if that doesn't matter to you, then this is a great place to get away. It's right on the lake but also quiet enough to enjoy some peace. There is plenty of open space for the kids to run and nice beaches to relax. The water was very clear. Camper with A/C recommended but not required.

My family loves going to Hellgate. You have easy access to the beach. My kids spent all day in the water swimming and floating. Great place to kick off on a paddle board or kayak.

About a 1.5 miles off the highway down a dirt road. Some shade in some spots, some spots with no shade. Camping about 50 feet from the waters edge. Nice small rocky beaches for easy access to the water. Many boaters brought their boats right to the camp site beach area. Pit toilets were well stocked and clean. Garbage cans are available for campers. Boat launch and day use area looked nice. Great sites for satellite and Starlink reception. Decent reception with both Verizon and ATT. We enjoyed the stay and would definitely return.

Had a great time at this site for a climbing retreat. Bathrooms lived up to the group of 70 or so on the two group sites. Big picnic area and pretty.
