Canyon Ferry/White Earth
Overview
Located on the western shores of Montana’s third-largest body of water, Canyon Ferry/White Earth offers a quintessential Big Sky experience. Managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, this recreation area provides a rugged yet accessible getaway for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Missouri River system. The park serves as a primary gateway to the expansive Canyon Ferry Reservoir, where the vast Montana sky meets deep blue waters and rolling prairie hills.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just north of Townsend, MT, the park is nestled between the Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountains. The landscape here is defined by high-desert prairies that transition into the rocky shoreline of the lake. Visitors are often treated to stunning mountain sunrises and frequent sightings of local wildlife, including bald eagles and ospreys. Its proximity to Highway 12 makes it a convenient stop for those traveling through central Montana while remaining secluded enough to feel worlds away from the city.
Amenities & Park Features
The White Earth site is designed for those who enjoy a more rustic camping style. While it lacks the full hookups of a commercial resort, it provides essential features like developed boat ramps and vault toilets. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. Travelers should arrive prepared for dry camping, as the focus here is on the natural environment rather than modern luxuries, though potable water is available seasonally at nearby recreation stations.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water-based recreation is the primary draw at this destination. The reservoir is renowned for world-class walleye fishing and excellent trout opportunities. Boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding are popular ways to explore the hidden coves of the lake. For a change of pace, the historic city of Helena is a short drive away, offering cultural sites like the Montana State Capitol. Hikers can also explore trails in the Big Belt Mountains for panoramic views of the entire Missouri River valley.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal fit for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize scenery and outdoor activity over resort-style amenities. It is a haven for anglers and boaters who want direct access to the water. If you enjoy a quiet, boondocking-style experience with plenty of space to breathe, Canyon Ferry/White Earth provides the perfect backdrop. It is particularly well-suited for families and solo travelers looking for an affordable, nature-first stay in the heart of Montana.

Well ill just say i hate having to reserve campsites on the internet. But its the new age we are in i suppose. Clean quiet campground. Decent launch. I really like the bay off to the side were you can beach your boat overnight and its out of the wind. Your in good fishing territory within minutes. Also like the bull and bar cafe place (old winston bar) off the highway were you turn to the campground. We had lunch there and it made things much easier knowing we didnt have to pack food. Not a huge fan of the dirt road but thats because i have an old boat and it beats the crap out of it. Its a little ways down that road but its worth it. Reserve in advance. Way in advance we could only get one night. There was at least four sites that people reserved and never even showed up. Which really irritates me because you can cancel the reservation. U may pay a fee but remember there is a lot of other people trying to enjoy the limited sites we have for the amount of people trying to use them. So be considerate of that when you cant make your reservation. As on all parts of canyon ferry watch the weather especially on a smaller boat. You dont want to get caught on the south end of the lake with weather coming in and dead batteries low fuel etc. Clean bathrooms lots of shoreline lots of dogs some off leash but that doesnt bother me. If you have dog issues go somewere else. Dont start crying to the camp host about people and their dogs Please. I personally always leash my german shepard because he doesnt like little dogs and i dont take the chance. But we all have our own ways with our pets. We tent camped and it wasnt very flat. Its close to home for us and we go fishing every weekend anyways so it saves time to stay and leave the boat in to catch the sunrise and sunset feeding times.

Beautiful! Dog friendly and quiet (midweek, early season). Spots near the lake were gorgeous. Close to town. Host was delightful.

What a great surprise! After driving 5 miles on a dirt road, over a hill, and there sits a beautiful lake!! No hook ups, vault toilets, but for $10 a night ($5 if you have America the Beautiful pass), you have a beautiful lake view.

Nice spot to camp by the lake. Restrooms are Porta potty. Rangers do not sell wood. Water spigot near bathrooms. It's pitch dark at night and difficult to find campgrounds so be prepared. There's also a very long road to get to the campgrounds. Boat and RV connections are available.

Great place to dry camp. Large spaces with trees, grass and peaceful environment. Bathrooms were very clean and well stocked. Camp host Mel is a great guy, friendly and very helpful.

Had know idea this campground was tucked away... we were pleasantly surprised and loved the seclusion of the campground! Just as we were finished setting up our camp... the Host Mel came to introduce himself. Such a nice man! Campgrounds are kept very clean!

Very clean restrooms and amazing beach access for fishing, swimming and boating, etc. No shade so it's nice being by the water. Look forward to coming back.

This is a small campground on Canyon Fairy Lake. There is 5.5 mile gravel road to get to the campground. At least a mile and a half is heavily washboard. There are no trees. There are pit toilets, picnic tables and fire rings. The shore is gravel with a sudden drop off at points only 3 feet from shore. Water is comforting on a hot day. Generators are allowed until 10 PM. Host is friendly.

Great little campground. No hookups, but only yards away from the water. Beautiful spot. Campsite 24 is the best.
