Cape Hatteras Natl Seashore/Cape Point

Overview

Located within the iconic Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Cape Point Campground offers an authentic coastal camping experience that highlights the raw beauty of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Unlike commercial resorts, this National Park Service facility provides a primitive, nature-first atmosphere where the sound of the Atlantic surf serves as your nightly soundtrack. It is a sprawling, open site that emphasizes the surrounding environment over modern luxuries, making it a bucket-list destination for travelers who value proximity to the ocean and historical landmarks above all else.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the village of Buxton, NC, the park is nestled just behind the protective coastal sand dunes. The terrain is largely flat and grassy, offering very little shade, which allows for constant sea breezes and wide-open views of the sky. Its location is strategically placed near the southernmost point of Hatteras Island, where the Labrador Current and the Gulf Stream collide. This unique geographical positioning creates a dynamic landscape that is constantly shaped by the wind and tides, providing a sense of isolation even when the park is busy.

Amenities & Park Features

Prospective visitors should note that Cape Point is a dry camping facility, meaning there are no water, electric, or sewer hookups at the individual sites. The park focuses on the essentials, providing flush toilets and potable water stations throughout the grounds. While you won't find heated pools or laundry rooms, the campground does offer cold-water showers to rinse off the salt and sand after a day on the shore. Each site includes a picnic table and a grill, catering to those who enjoy a traditional, self-contained RVing lifestyle.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park’s greatest asset is its proximity to The Point, a world-famous destination for surf fishing and beach driving. Just a short distance away, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands as a sentinel over the graveyard of the Atlantic, offering visitors a chance to explore maritime history and climb for panoramic views. Outdoor enthusiasts can spend their days beachcombing for shells, birdwatching in the salt marshes, or surfing the legendary breaks that have made the Outer Banks a premier destination for water sports on the East Coast.

Who This Park Is Best For

Cape Point is ideal for self-contained RVers and tent campers who are prepared for the elements and prefer a rustic stay. It is the perfect choice for avid anglers and surfers who want to be as close to the water as possible without the distractions of a typical resort. If you appreciate dark night skies for stargazing and the simplicity of life on the edge of the continent, this park provides a unique opportunity to disconnect from the grid and reconnect with the power of the natural world.

Very affordable, clean restrooms, but a lot of the sites were flooded when we were there

Excellent condition, and the sounds of the waves lulled us to sleep. The bathrooms are also very convenient to the tent camping sites.

If I could give this place 10 stars I would!! We recently spent 4 days here during the 4th of July holiday and it was great. The grounds are very well cared for, and the bathrooms are very clean. It's location is absolutely awesome, you can access multiple beaches by vehicle or on foot. The campsites are good size, and very cheap "20 per night". There is not any power for the campsites however you can use a generator from 6 am - 10 pm. It was very quiet, and we totally enjoyed our visit here. I 100 % recommend this place if you are wanting to camp in this area.

Bring your canoe or boat?! Entire place is flooded out about 4”-5” over the pavement roads and deeper in the grass/vegetation. Definitely not able to camp in April 2024. But it’s a good location off the ocean front.

I’ve been coming here since I was a little girl, and it’s been over 15 years. This place will always have my heart. It’s just at clean and beautiful since the 1st time my parents took me. The restrooms and showers have been remodeled which great and the lots are very well taking care of. I do miss having a park ranger 24/7 to check on guests and any interruptions at night. Only thing I was would say is generators should NOT be allowed to be on all night.

I really enjoyed the scenery. It was so calm and peaceful. The fishing was amazing! First time I've seen the ocean and fished it and landed an amazing stingray! Site was nice. Could have been mowed but wasn't there much more than to sleep. Showers were freezing cold to the point of being painful and no lighting which was a pain. But overall I can't wait to come back again, just need somewhere else to shower

Fantastic boondocking campground. I have an annual beach pass and there are several great beach driving areas here. As well as a beach road that takes you right to Frisco.

National Park Service does a good job. It's prone to flooding but there's always High Ground three beaches to choose from South Beach being the best it's real camping here there's no shade you're subjected to the elements that's the way it should be but remember don't make a reservation in advance

Got to the campground and the site I reserved was under water. Ranger let me pick another. Hardly any campers so it wasn't hard. Very very quiet at night. The light from Hatteras Lighthouse lit up the campground with every pass. Walked to the beach then found out there is parking at the end of the beach ramp past the dunes.
