Cape Hatteras Natl Seashore/Oregon Inlet

Overview

Oregon Inlet Campground offers a quintessential Outer Banks experience, nestled behind the protective sand dunes of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Managed by the National Park Service, this destination provides a rare blend of rugged coastal beauty and updated infrastructure. It serves as an essential basecamp for travelers who want to wake up to the rhythmic sound of the Atlantic surf while staying within the boundaries of a protected national treasure. The atmosphere here is centered on the natural environment, offering a peaceful escape from the more commercialized areas of the North Carolina coast.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Nags Head, NC, the park is positioned on the northern tip of Bodie Island. It sits strategically near the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and the Marc Basnight Bridge, which connects the northern beaches to Hatteras Island. The surroundings are defined by sea oats, low-lying coastal shrubs, and expansive sandy vistas. This prime waterfront location ensures that guests are never more than a short walk from the shoreline, providing an unobstructed connection to the coastal wilderness of the Outer Banks.

Amenities & Park Features

While many national park campgrounds are strictly primitive, Oregon Inlet stands out by offering water and electric hookups at many of its sites, making it highly accessible for modern RVers. The park is designed to accommodate a variety of rig sizes while maintaining a sense of openness. Essential features include:

  • Modern restrooms and heated indoor showers for comfort.
  • A communal dump station and potable water fill-up points.
  • Direct boardwalk access to the pristine Atlantic beaches.
  • Leashed pet-friendly areas and paved parking pads.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The campground is a gateway to the best of the Outer Banks. Visitors are only a few minutes away from the historic Bodie Island Lighthouse, where guests can climb to the top for panoramic views of the marshland and ocean. For those interested in world-class fishing, the nearby inlet offers legendary opportunities for both surf casting and offshore charters. Nature enthusiasts can also explore the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, located just across the bridge, which provides exceptional birdwatching and quiet nature trails.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is the ideal choice for travelers who prioritize outdoor recreation and solitude over the high-end amenities of a private resort. It is a favorite among dedicated anglers, surfers, and photographers looking to capture the raw beauty of the North Carolina coast. Families who enjoy unstructured beach time and those seeking a quiet, dark-sky environment for stargazing will find Oregon Inlet to be the perfect match for their travel style. It is truly a haven for those who want the ocean to be their primary source of entertainment.

Great location for a campground. Sites are all exposed & pretty close together (RV sites) tent sites have slightly more privacy, no hookups. Plenty of restrooms & showers that are clean & well maintained. Dump station across street at marina that also has store, restaurant & gas(for vehicle). Also can charter boats for fishing.

Probably one of the best well kept secrets of the OBX. If you like The boondock with your RV this is a place to go. There is water and electric, available at some of the sites. No sewage, but I was told there is a dump station, I just never saw it. There are showers, and bathrooms available and they are scattered throughout the campground.

Very nice campground. It's hard to rate it due to the Govt shut down. The bathrooms were cleaned early every morning. Other than that we never saw any staff. The warm showers were a nice surprise, we had expected cold showers. We had our own path to the beach which was nice.

Lots and lots of mosquitoes all day not just at dusk so be prepared. Showers are from the Victorian times and very exposed. We have been to parks all over the country and used some pretty sketchy ones but we wouldn't use these. See picture. Beach is great, note, you cannot see it from the campsites. It's a small walk from the campsites up and over dunes. The beach is pretty but chunked up by all the trucks and cars that drive on it.

This is one of our favorite campgrounds. It is incredibly hard to get in, but when you do... it's worth it. The electric sites are hard to get for a few days consecutively. You need to stay on rec.gov app (or set up notifications.) Section A is for tenting or roof top tents. The B/C section can be for tenting as well, but it's primarily trailers, rvs, pop-ups. This area has some electric sites that go fast. It's a real deal compared to glamping campgrounds. You will get sandy. It might be hot. The showers have hot water, but it is rationed by a pull string. They are not completely closed in, so expect some bugs. Quiet time 10-6, no generators during that time. No golf carts. Sites are paved, but skinny. Trailer and pull vehicle need to be off the grass. Some sand spurs. It's the beach ya'll!

Pretty exposed to the elements. Check the weather before you get there and prepare. Bring LONG (flat or bent bar, if you can find them) tent stakes for the sandy soil! Sustained 20mph winds are no joke. The place is kept as well as any National Park. If you camp on the eastern side of the grounds you have the Atlantic Ocean in your backyard. The sites are really close together but it builds a sense of community. Good place to bring a family/kids looking to build core memories.

This was our first time camping at a beach, so I was skeptical if I'd like camping in the wide open with no trees or privacy. But we picked site C19 (with water and electric) and it was great!! You can sit out back on your chair and face the dune and watch the moon rise in the evening and enjoy the ocean breeze. Sort of a long walk to the beach if you don't have a 4wd but it's still worth it. The marina across the street is very very nice, clean, loaded with all the things you'd want or need on your stay. Oregon Inlet is nice because you're away from all the traffic and busyness of the main highway at the Outer Banks. We will definitely return for the off-season!

Excellent location. Very central for the outer banks. Easy to find as well as easy to maneuver into our campsite. Very clean facilities throughout. The only downside we saw was not enough showers there was a line for showers every time we went. Otherwise, we loved it and would go back

This establishment is truly delightful, aside from the wind and lack of sleep last night. However, we cannot complain. We choose to be flexible and make the best of any situation that arises. The bathrooms are exceptionally clean, featuring open showers, as depicted in the photograph in front of the bathroom. I appreciate the open shower design, as it provides effective cooling, preventing me from sweating after showering. The sites are meticulously maintained, clean, level, and well-manicured. A short walk over the dunes from the sites leads directly to the beach. It is essential to note that there are no trees in the area, so summer visitors should be prepared. Although sewage facilities are not available, a dump station is conveniently located across from the campground. We will undoubtedly return in the fall.

Definitely diminished amenities, like only 1 open restroom for the entire campground. I hear if u want a shower, go early to have hot water bc there is none to use in the afternoon. So, Expect high winds n chilly weather, Not really any breakers for the beach breezes in the area. , true style roughing it. Yet the area, of course is gorgeous and peaceful once you get to the beach which they have close.
