Capulin Camp & RV Park

Overview

Capulin Camp & RV Park serves as a peaceful, straightforward stopover for travelers navigating the high plains of northeastern New Mexico. This park is designed for those who appreciate a quiet, no-frills environment where the focus remains on the surrounding natural beauty. It provides a reliable place to recharge, offering full hookup sites that accommodate a variety of rig sizes, ensuring your stay is comfortable and hassle-free while you traverse this scenic region of the American Southwest.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the small village of Capulin, the park is defined by its proximity to unique geological landmarks. The landscape is dominated by sweeping vistas and the volcanic history of the region. Being located near Highway 64 and Highway 87 makes this an ideal waypoint for travelers moving between Kansas, Colorado, and Texas. The high-altitude setting provides crisp air and clear, expansive night skies that are perfect for stargazing after a long day of driving.

Amenities & Park Features

The park prioritizes function and accessibility, catering to the needs of modern RVers. Guests can expect well-maintained utility connections including water, sewer, and electricity at most sites. The layout is designed for easy maneuvering, which is particularly helpful for those traveling with larger motorhomes or trailers. While the park maintains a rustic, laid-back atmosphere, the essential services are reliably provided to ensure that your setup process is quick and efficient throughout your visit.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the nearby Capulin Volcano National Monument, which is just a short drive from the park entrance. This cinder cone offers spectacular views and accessible hiking trails that lead to the crater rim. Beyond the volcano, the surrounding area is rich in history and public lands, making it a great base for those interested in geology, bird watching, or simply exploring the quiet, winding backroads that define this corner of New Mexico.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best suited for nature enthusiasts and road trippers looking for a quiet home base while exploring national monuments. It appeals to travelers who prefer a serene atmosphere over high-density resorts with excessive entertainment. If you are a history buff or a photographer seeking to capture the rugged beauty of a volcanic landscape, this park provides the necessary convenience to explore the region at your own pace without unnecessary distractions.

Rented a cute little cabin. Was perfect for our family of 4 and right across from the Capulin Volcano National Monument! AMAZING stars at night in this Dark Sky area. Some road noise so bring ear plugs. Clean bathrooms!

Don’t waste your time and money on this place. There were so many weeds and raccoon poop around the hookups they were hard to get to. They didn’t give us the WiFi passcode or the code to the bathroom doors. The men’s room wasn’t locked but there was NO hot water. They wouldn’t answer the door so I called to get the code to the women’s bathroom and they never called back. We couldn’t get out of there fast enough. I couldn’t give it a minus score or I would have.

Over charged us, no wifi. Not very organized. Only could use showers from 5-6. Seemed put out when asked for wifi passcode. it was incorrect so I asked again. Was very upset at me bothering her. She told me she was not responsible for the wifi. but she is the owner so who is?

Stopped there for 2 nights. Small rv park right off highway. No noise issues. Owners are super friendly! Got everything you need. Only 1 washer & dryer working, but luckily I was only one using. Very close to capulin volcano & worth a short drive there! Have to drive a bit for fuel & food. Perfect stop for what we needed.

This place has a lot of potential. POSITIVE: 1. Bathrooms are clean, newly remodeled and nicely decorated. (Should have replaced shower heads though) 2 Location is right near the entrance to Capulin Volcano National Monument 3. Grounds have sitting areas, darts, hammocks, firepit. Level gravel wide pull though spots. NEGATIVE: 1. Customer service! Unfriendly, confused lady in office that makes you not feel welcomed 2. Laundry room was closed for repair. Machines are old and just need to be replaced. 3. Wifi was really poor and pretty much unusable. 4. Reservation process. It is hard to get a hold of them on the phone to make reservations. They do not send any type of confirmation, and when we arrived she told us our reservation was for the day before (which was impossible since I called at 3:00 the day before and we talked about arrival time of 1:00 tomorrow). We stayed 1 night in our travel trailer as we passed through. I would not stay again until the negatives are fixed. UPDATE: After writing this review, the owner called me and said I am no longer welcome to stay at this park. I am changing changing my 2 star review to 1 star.

I want to like this place but I have been calling for over 2 months trying to book a reservation and NO ONE calls me back. I guess if your rv park is booked no need for new customers but at least let people know your full. I feel this is very unprofessional. I will be sure not to call them ever again now or in the future. If you read their website they seem like nice people but I’m unsure if it’s the manager that doesn’t return calls or if the owners know what’s going on. Either way I will take my business elsewhere.
