Caribou-Targhee/Riverside

Overview

Riverside Campground, nestled within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, offers a serene escape along the banks of the Henry's Fork. Unlike modern RV resorts, this location focuses on providing a rustic wilderness experience where the sound of the river replaces highway noise. It is a preferred spot for those seeking direct access to Idaho’s natural beauty while maintaining a simple, traditional camping atmosphere.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 15 miles north of Ashton, Idaho, the park is perched on a scenic rim overlooking the Henry's Fork of the Snake River. The campground is shaded by a dense canopy of lodgepole pines and Douglas firs, providing cool relief during the summer months. The surrounding landscape features dramatic volcanic cliffs and lush riparian habitats that support a diverse range of local wildlife, including moose and bald eagles.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest site, amenities are focused on the essentials. The park offers paved spurs suitable for various RV lengths, though full hookups are not available. Travelers will find the following features on-site:

  • Vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water.
  • Trash collection and recycling services.
  • Individual sites with a picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring.

These amenities ensure a comfortable stay for those prepared for dry camping while preserving the natural integrity of the forest floor and protecting the scenic riverfront environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the world-class fly fishing on the Henry's Fork, a river famous among anglers for its trophy trout. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the thundering Upper and Lower Mesa Falls, two of the most spectacular waterfalls in the West. The park also serves as a convenient base camp for day trips into the western edge of Yellowstone National Park or the quiet hiking trails of Harriman State Park.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who value solitude and scenery over luxury amenities. It is a perfect match for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly anglers and nature photographers, who want to be steps away from the water. If you enjoy a quiet, off-grid environment that prioritizes the sights and sounds of the forest, this riverside gem is an excellent choice for your Idaho itinerary.

Outstanding Hosts- Excellent Campground. Pleasant, conversational and kept the park in amazing condition. The bathrooms are the cleanest vault toilets in all of creation. Water near most sites. Well spaced. Wonderful place to call home for 4 days and nights. Highly recommended - I will camp here again.

The owner of the site was not very nice. Not accepting digital pay even tho they have a QR code. No wifi or reception here. We had to go drive into town to get to an atm to pay the fee, he would not provide a pen either, told us we had to go get our own. We bought pens to get change for the fee since he doesn't give change either. He did have a pen because later he left a ticket filled out for us on our wind shield. So we didnt need to buy pens. We would have stayed somewhere else if we could, but we couldn't afford anywhere else at the moment. The mosquitoes were out of control here.As soon as we get in our tent it be covered with them. They were everywhere and we even had mosquito spray we were using. Would recommend having exact amount change thats owed before coming here to save the headache. It is a stunning view here, only good thing about this place!

Nice campground for RVs and Tents. Just off a flowing river, perfect for fly fishing or a cold soak. Brrr.

Amazing camp hosts, but something I have to say and can’t stop thinking about is how well maintained this facility is. I have NEVER been to a campground with cleaner outhouses. Like… you’re lucky to have any public restroom be half as clean and stocked as these were. Lots of different style camp lots, pet friendly, inexpensive, little to no cell service (which is appreciated by me) and right off the Henry’s Fork 🎣

Campground is immaculate! Not even a spec of trash anywhere. Campsites are wonderful, paved spots in the reserved section, concrete tables and pads around the fire pits. Level and small fill in the tent spots. Bathrooms are spotless. Good shade in most spots and descent spacing between campsites 👍. Nice and cool in the summer heat. Henry’s Fork river nearby
