Caribou-Targhee/Summit View

Overview

Nestled high within the Montpelier Ranger District, Summit View Campground offers a peaceful retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in nature. Located at an elevation of approximately 7,400 feet, this seasonal destination provides a cool mountain escape during the hot summer months. It is managed as part of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, ensuring a rustic and well-preserved environment that focuses on the natural beauty of the Georgetown Canyon area. Travelers can expect a quiet, unplugged experience away from the modern distractions of larger resorts.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated near Georgetown, Idaho, tucked away in a scenic canyon surrounded by towering evergreens and aspens. The drive up the canyon offers stunning vistas of the rugged Idaho landscape, featuring steep slopes and lush greenery. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by high-country meadows that frequently bloom with vibrant wildflowers in the early summer. This secluded forest setting is ideal for those who want to distance themselves from the noise of the highway and enjoy the crisp mountain air and the sounds of local wildlife.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional national forest facility, the features here are simple and designed for self-contained travelers. The campground offers 17 individual sites, each equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring with a grill. It is important for visitors to note that there is no pressurized water system or electricity available on-site, making it a true dry camping experience. Well-maintained vault toilets are available for guest use, but campers should arrive with a full fresh water tank and sufficient supplies to be self-sufficient during their stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore in the surrounding region. The area serves as a gateway to miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding through the Caribou-Targhee forest. A short drive south leads to the turquoise waters of Bear Lake, often called the Caribbean of the Rockies, which is perfect for boating and swimming. Additionally, the nearby Minnetonka Cave offers guided tours through impressive limestone chambers, providing a unique subterranean adventure for families and explorers alike.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for RVers who prefer boondocking and primitive stays over high-density commercial parks. Because the access roads and sites are somewhat compact, it is best suited for tent campers, van lifers, and owners of smaller travel trailers or truck campers. It is a perfect match for travelers who value solitude and wildlife viewing, providing a quiet basecamp for those who want to spend their days exploring the Idaho wilderness and their nights under a clear canopy of stars.

Deep woods and large sites heavily used by ATVs. Clean vault toilets but NO Water due to broken pipe that forest service has not fixed in months. About 8 miles off Hwy 30 and 10 miles north of Montpelier for gas, etc. Elevation of 7200 makes for cool nights. Nice host!

We enjoyed our 2 night stay here hiking through lovely forest and identifying the wildflowers. Our hardworking camp host, Tanya, was friendly and helpful. She had a map of the area available and provided good information. Bathrooms were clean. This small campground is host to many ATVs and dirt bikes - if the group sites are full, it could be extremely noisy and chaotic.

Great place to camp but bring an ATV or something because there isn't a whole lot to do in this area otherwise. We camped herd just to try out pulling a camping trailer. It was a great first experience for us. Roads were well maintained. Never saw the camp hosts. We stayed in campsite #19. Not as much shade in this one but it does offer a bit more space between neighbors.

Very pretty! Trees everywhere. We reserved camp site #1. This is a pull through, easy enough to fit two trailers in it. Trees on both sides. Plenty of shade. I loved how spaced the camp sites were, we didn't feel like we could hear much of others around us. There were a few group/double sites that were nicely sized. Lots of ATVs going around, but didn't seem overly crazy for 4th of July weekend. The weather changes a lot. Sunny one minute, raining (for five minutes) the next. The temperature was great- can't beat low to mid 70's in July.
