Carter Lake County Park
Overview
Carter Lake County Park offers a breathtaking escape nestled in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. Managed by Larimer County, this destination revolves around a massive three-mile-long reservoir that serves as a focal point for outdoor recreation. It provides a rugged, natural atmosphere where travelers can enjoy the beauty of the high desert landscape while remaining close to modern conveniences. The park is renowned for its scenic rock formations and vibrant blue waters, making it a favorite for those seeking a tranquil retreat from the hustle of the Front Range.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just southwest of Loveland, Colorado, the park sits at an elevation of 5,760 feet. The surrounding terrain is characterized by dramatic hogback ridges and ponderosa pines, offering a true sense of the Colorado wilderness. Because it is located away from the heavy traffic of the interstate, the area maintains a peaceful environment. Visitors are treated to spectacular sunrises over the plains and mountain silhouettes that define the western horizon every evening, creating a picturesque backdrop for every campsite.
Amenities & Park Features
While the park leans toward a natural experience, it provides several campgrounds with varied levels of service for RV travelers. The park features specialized areas to accommodate different camping needs:
- Eagle Campground is the primary choice for RVs, offering paved sites with electric hookups.
- Sky View Campground is located on the ridge and provides a group-oriented camping experience.
- The Swim Beach area offers a seasonal place to cool off and enjoy the shoreline.
Common facilities throughout the park include vault toilets, potable water stations, and multiple paved boat launches, ensuring a functional stay for those prepared for a county park environment rather than a commercial resort.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water-based activities are the main draw, including boating, sailing, and water skiing on the crystal-clear reservoir. Anglers frequently visit to catch walleye, rainbow trout, and kokanee salmon in the deep, cool waters. On land, the Sundance Trail provides a scenic route for hikers and mountain bikers along the western shore. For a change of pace, the city of Loveland is just a short drive away, known for its public art galleries and the famous Benson Sculpture Garden, offering a blend of culture and nature.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for active families and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize recreation over luxury resort amenities. It is perfect for boaters who want quick access to the water and RVers who enjoy a rustic camping style with the benefit of electrical power. If you prefer waking up to the sound of nature and the sight of the water rather than the hum of a highway, this Colorado gem will fit your travel style perfectly.

The beach here is incredible! The sand is soft and great for kids, and the area is large even if it’s crowded you will find a spot. Parking is close and there are 2 porta potties. Theres a designated roped off swim area where you don’t need a life vest, but paddle boards are not allowed. Outside the swim area, life vests are required and you can have paddle boards. There is a large no wake zone outside the swim beach which is great for learning to paddleboard. The water temperature is amazing. There is zero shade on the beach so keep that in mind when packing. There are lots of rocks in the water once you get in so I would also recommend some kind of water shoe. The water was so clean, especially compared to Cherry Creek Reservoir or Chatfield, it’s one of the best lakes we have been to without having to drive over an hour from Denver or go up I70. We will definitely be back!

My husband took me here for Labor Day weekend so we could go paddleboarding. This lake is so big and beautiful. We went on a 2 hour hike. The hike is easy enough but it is very rocky so watch your step. Ive heard there is so much wildlife to see. We didn't see any because it was a very rainy day. When we went the water temp was about 71° and absolutely wonderful. What i love about this lake is that the water is clear and you done leave smelling like a swampy fish. Definitely will be back, especially with it only costing $10

Nice lake, but not for fishing. Too much loud recreational boating and paddle boarders. Makes me wonder why they stock it 🤔

Drive out to Carter Lake two weekends in a row. The first time as part of a classic car rally, the second weekend my wife and I drove out early to fish. Was blown away by how beautiful the lake was both times. Even the bathroom at the swimming beach was clean. Definitely worth the drive to visit whether you live here like I do, or if you're visiting from our off state

Beautiful! Clean and great fishing.

It's 10$ per vehicle to enter if you don't have a pass, great views and lots of parking lots with picnic tables, unfortunately all these lots seem to be closed for the winter, there were some other lots without picnic tables that were still open and we could easily walk down from them to the shore, over all very serene place with amazing views, definitely worth visiting.

Showing properties near Carter Lake, Colorado and drove by the south shore. It’s a beautiful view, both in the winter and summertime. be sure to check park hours before going.

Great place for a small excursion! The lake is relatively small so it can get crowded and during popular times, the boat ramps get really busy. The boat inspections are usually very fast 🙏🏻 The rangers are ACTIVE. They spend a lot of time making sure you have a parking pass and aren’t using hammocks on trees and only doc for 10min. They do it to keep the place clean and safe and fair, but you should be prepared for an interaction; they are just doing their jobs. For a quick trip from the metro area it’s well worth it. Camping is pretty great for being a camp ground. There are a lot of sites, but it’s still nice and peaceful. Vaulted toilets are usually as clean and tolerable as vaulted toilets can be :)

Wider and longer than I thought it was going to be, less of a round lake shape and more of a long canyon filled up with water lake shape. Very wide so boaters can all have their space and plenty of beach and shore “boat parking” opportunities. Swim beaches and a marina. Rentals for kayaks and SUP (stand up paddle boards) .. wait they aren’t called SUPB’s? lol Bathrooms and camping spaces with Hookups. Well maintained area! $10 to go and has a 24/7 self service kiosk to buy the pass.
