Carters Lake - COE/Woodring Branch
Overview
Carters Lake Woodring Branch offers a serene escape managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Situated on the shoreline of Georgia's deepest lake, this campground is celebrated for its rugged beauty and the intentional lack of residential development along the water. The park provides a tranquil atmosphere where the focus remains entirely on the natural environment and the sparkling, clear blue waters that define this unique reservoir.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in Oakman, GA, the park sits gracefully at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills. Unlike many other Georgia reservoirs, Carters Lake features a shoreline completely free of private docks and houses, creating a genuine wilderness experience. The surrounding dense hardwood forests provide ample shade and seclusion, making it a premier destination for travelers looking to disconnect and enjoy the quiet sounds of the North Georgia backcountry.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features well-maintained sites equipped with water and electric hookups, which comfortably accommodate a variety of RV sizes. Guests can enjoy several practical facilities during their stay:
- Modern bathhouses with hot showers and clean restrooms
- A multi-lane boat ramp for easy lake access
- A dump station and on-site laundry facilities
- Picnic shelters and a dedicated children’s playground
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can spend hours exploring the Amadahy Trail, a four-mile loop perfect for hikers and mountain bikers that offers breathtaking lake views. The lake itself is a renowned destination for fishing, specifically for trophy spotted bass and striped bass. If you venture outside the park, the nearby town of Ellijay offers a charming mountain atmosphere, while Fort Mountain State Park provides even more extensive hiking trails and historical sites to explore.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for nature enthusiasts and boaters who prioritize scenic beauty and direct water access over high-end resort luxuries. It is a fantastic fit for RVers who enjoy a peaceful, rustic atmosphere and are comfortable navigating the rolling terrain of the region. Families and solo travelers seeking a quiet retreat for reflection or active water sports will find Woodring Branch to be one of the most rewarding stops in Georgia.

Great camping trip hilly. Nice long site but bit narrow. Nice views. Our site had a nice trail to a private beach area.

October 10-12. Slow season and quiet. Very clean. Campground is in the boondocks off the main road though. Beautiful view of Carter's Lake.

Beautiful place. However primitive campground spots 7-10 are so close in proximity to each one. Kinda defeats the purpose of camping and getting away from people. The picture online showed they were spaced apart and that's not the case. For the price you could rent out more than one spot for additional privacy. Lastly wouldn't recommend if you have bad knees, steep incline back up to parking.

Campsites are mostly level and well maintained. Only a few sites have easy access to the water even though most all are located on the lake. We're going to camp there in September so I'll be able to learn more about this campground.

Was a camp host there, great place to camp lots of friendly people come here and it was great to work with the staff and the customers nice facility's and beach. Lots of shade and a cool breeze off of the lake on most days the road down to the camp ground is very whindy and people tend to drive in the middle of the road so be careful driving in to campground

We loved going camping at the gated campground bathhouse, laundry room, a playground and a beach area! We will definitely be going back

Beautiful place, very friendly staff! Don’t give them 5 stars because the bathrooms aren’t clean and they are unisex - so men and women use the same bath and toilets, it creates some chaos - but other than that- the place is amazing!!

Woodring is my absolute favorite camping spot. Carter's Lake is so clear and clean. It's worth the drive even if you don't live close by.

Beautiful area around Carter's Lake. We were just visiting for the day but we enjoy the ride especially in the fall. Nice trail for walking on and enjoying the fall season. Didn't take as many pictures as I usually do but enjoyed the quiet peaceful surroundings and all the colors nature offers during this season.
