Catoctin Mountain/Owens Creek Campground

Overview

Owens Creek Campground serves as a tranquil getaway within the Catoctin Mountain Park system in Maryland. Managed by the National Park Service, this destination offers a primitive camping experience focused on connecting with nature and leaving the modern world behind. The campground is nestled under a dense canopy of mature deciduous trees, providing a cool and shaded environment even during the height of summer. It is the perfect spot for those who want to enjoy the quiet sounds of the Maryland wilderness while staying in a well-maintained, historic forest setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Sabillasville, Maryland, the park is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The landscape is defined by rugged rock formations and the gentle flow of Owens Creek, which winds through the area. This high-elevation setting offers a crisp mountain breeze and a sense of isolation despite being within a reasonable driving distance of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The surrounding forest is home to diverse wildlife and vibrant seasonal foliage, making it a top choice for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Amenities & Park Features

Amenities at Owens Creek are designed to support a self-sufficient, traditional camping experience. The park provides several essential features for guests:

  • Fire rings and picnic tables provided at every individual site.
  • Centrally located flush toilets and access to potable drinking water.
  • Firewood available for purchase to prevent the spread of invasive species.
Please note that there are no hookups available, and the maximum vehicle length is strictly limited to 22 feet, ensuring the campground remains quiet and accessible for smaller rigs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Just a short drive away, travelers can visit Cunningham Falls State Park, which features Maryland’s largest cascading waterfall and a lake for swimming and fishing. For history buffs, the nearby town of Thurmont offers charming local shops and insights into the region’s heritage, while the park’s proximity to the historic presidential retreat at Camp David adds a unique air of significance to the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for small RV owners, van lifers, and tent campers who prioritize scenery and serenity over luxury resort amenities. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of rustling leaves and prefer a traditional camping vibe, Owens Creek will not disappoint. My friend and I had a wonderful weekend at this campground. The only MAJOR downside was the road closures around where both entrances were closed except for 1. We took the detour but the detour had no more signs on the roads we took so we ended up traveling another hour looking around to find out where to go. We were aware of the closures prior to… but there were no other directional indications. We eventually found some friendly security guards around Camp David to direct us. The plus sides were: the camp host was very friendly and relaxed and didn’t mind of anything as long as you kept to yourself. The bathrooms were VERY well maintained. Everybody was pretty respectful of one another and the quiet time. We will plan to come back!

Owen's Creek has quickly become my favorite campground in the area. 1. The campground host Eric, does a fantastic job communicating and keeping the site well maintained. He really takes the site to the next level. 2. The camp sites themselves are well laid out with a slightly raised bed for the tents, picnic table and an excellent fire pit. 3. The provided firewood is an excellent addition and makes the experience even more enjoyable. 4. Utility sinks for doing dishes is amazing 5. Plenty bathrooms and even a couple shower stalls. My only wish is that the bathrooms were just a little cleaner, but they are really good for campground bathrooms. 6. Great proximity to Catoctin, Fort Richie, Thurmont and Emmitsburg among many other things. All in all, I am supper happy with my time at Owens Creek and I will be coming back to this campground.

This place is absolutely the best camping I've done in a long time. Everything you need. From parking to your own grill and picnic table a pole to hang your food. I would recommend putting food in your vehicle so animals don't take off with your food.

Great facilities, many of the campsites have lots of space with privacy from other sites. Our campsite hosts were friendly, helpful and weren't imposing. Firewood available for purchase at the campground. We stayed at site 32 which was nicely separated. I took other photos of sites 31-34 for reference.

My favorite campsite in the DMV! This is my 3rd time staying here. I want to give a shout out to one of the camp hosts - Ty! He helped to bring logs to my site and was super friendly. The bathrooms/showers are always clean and each site is well-maintained. I stayed in Site #29 this time which is a little more isolated by the creek. Felt very safe each of my times here and camp guests are respectful. Mostly families and other couples. Have a great time!

This is a great local camping spot if your looking to get away for a night. Bring an axe if your planning on a campfire. The wood offered is a bit large.

Campsites were decently far apart, bathrooms were clean, everyone was quiet and respectful. Good, dry wood was plentiful. Will definitely come back.

Well kept campground. I liked that the tent area was separate on the site creating its own area. I will definitely be back
