Chattahoochee Bend

Overview

Chattahoochee Bend State Park offers a serene escape into one of Georgia’s largest protected wilderness areas. Located along a sweeping curve of the Chattahoochee River, this park provides a sense of seclusion that is rare for being so close to a major metropolitan area. It is a destination where nature takes center stage, offering travelers a quiet retreat filled with forested landscapes and river views. Unlike high-traffic commercial parks, this state park emphasizes the preservation of the local ecosystem while providing high-quality facilities for modern travelers.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the northwestern corner of Coweta County near Newnan, GA, the park encompasses nearly 3,000 acres of pristine riverfront property. The surroundings are characterized by dense hardwood forests and the gentle flow of the river, creating a peaceful backdrop for any camping trip. Accessing the park involves a scenic drive through the Georgia countryside, leading you away from the highway noise and into a wilderness sanctuary that feels miles away from civilization despite its proximity to the city.

Amenities & Park Features

The RV camping area is thoughtfully designed, featuring spacious pull-through sites that easily accommodate various rig sizes. Most sites provide water and electrical hookups with 30- and 50-amp service available. On-site facilities include a clean bathhouse, a dump station, and a boat ramp for easy river access for kayaks and canoes. For those who enjoy exploring on foot or wheels, the park maintains over 12 miles of hiking trails and specialized mountain biking paths that wind through the thick Georgia woods.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the charm of Historic Downtown Newnan, known for its well-preserved antebellum architecture and local dining. Fans of pop culture often make the short trip to nearby Senoia to see filming locations from famous television series. Within the park itself, outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the fishing platforms and observation towers, which offer excellent birdwatching opportunities and panoramic views of the river bend that give the park its name.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and paddlers who want to spend their days on the water or exploring forest trails. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking a quiet weekend getaway without the distractions of a commercial resort. If you prefer a tranquil atmosphere and the sounds of the forest over bustling city life, this Georgia state park will perfectly suit your travel style. It is best for those who enjoy a rustic, outdoor-centric experience with the comfort of a level, well-maintained RV pad.

Awesome! Great hiking and biking trails. Only 24 RV sites and separate tenting areas. 20 miles from nearest town, so bring all your supplies. No Verizon and no campground WiFi.

Spent two nights in a cabin in the park. The cabins are in great shape, no complaints at all with them. The A/C worked great, bed was comfortable and clean, and the bathroom was clean as well. The kitchen had everything we needed. We didn't spend much time in the park (we were exploring the area outside the park), but when we were in the park, we didn't see many animals. We didn't even see one squirrel, which I thought was kinda odd. Not many birds either. Maybe animals just don't like the cabin area. But the best part of our stay? The quiet. The most sound we heard were others either going to their cabins or leaving.

A beautiful park with nice hiking trails. Location is more remote than expected and the drive in just adds to the natural beauty of the place. It's very quiet and peaceful and not too many people. The visitor center was a nice surprise. They have everything you could need for camping or hiking or even just snacks and water and restrooms also. Really like this park.

We love hiking and picnicking at Chattahoochee Bend State Park. It's a wonderful place and we enjoy being out in nature. We're so thankful the staff replaced the rotten park bench at the top of Wild Turkey Trail and Boulder Trail. It's so nice! We're also thankful for the handicap accessible trail which allows hiking even after knee replacement surgery. There's a lot of beautiful deer and other wildlife in the park. Be extra careful when hiking, snakes are out!

Riverside Trail is such a nice and easy trail. After walking 3 miles, we enjoy having a cup noodles or grilling some meat at the park. Isn’t this the perfect healing experience?

Shaded trails, level ground for peaceful short hikes (up to 5 miles or less). The observation tower has a view of the river and trails. Difficult to fish in the Chattahoochee because of the steep banks. Entry is self service drop $5 in the honor box so have singles or a fiver.

I loved hiking here. There's a ton of trails and a nice visitor center. We did the river side trail. There's tables through out to sit down and eat or rest. I would definitely bring a friend and be ready to walk a LOT. I believe the trail we took was a little over 4 miles in one direction so about 9 miles total.

You need to pay for parking at the visitor center (it was $5) and then you can choose which hike you would like to go on. We went on the one along the river which was nice and shaded. To get there, you need to get back on the road that you got off of to get to the visitor center, and keep driving all the way to the end where there's a big parking lot, a nice playground for the kids, and tables to possibly enjoy a picnic at. There are also restrooms there on the left, right before you get to the parking lot. The kids also enjoyed the wooden tower you get to if you take the river trail. You can also camp at this park, but we just went for the hike. The staff at the visitor center are friendly and helpful and can give you a map of the park.
