Chequamegon-Nicolet/Sailor Lake

Overview

Sailor Lake Campground offers a quintessential Wisconsin wilderness experience within the expansive Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Located near Park Falls, this destination is renowned for its direct connection to motorized trail systems, making it a hub for those who love to explore on wheels. While the environment is rugged and remote, it provides a sense of deep immersion into the Northwoods that more commercial parks often lack. It is a place where the sounds of nature and the hum of engines coexist perfectly for the outdoor adventurer.

Location & Surroundings

Situated deep in Price County, the park is surrounded by towering pines and lush hardwoods that change beautifully with the seasons. The centerpiece of the area is Sailor Lake, a 169-acre body of water known for its stillness and natural beauty. The terrain is relatively flat but densely forested, creating a private and secluded atmosphere for each campsite. Travelers will find themselves miles away from city lights, enjoying the dark night skies and the quiet rustle of the Wisconsin wilderness.

Amenities & Park Features

As a national forest site, the amenities here lean toward the rustic side, prioritizing a back-to-basics lifestyle. RVers should prepare for primitive camping without water or electrical hookups. The facility provides essential comforts to ensure a functional stay, including:

  • Vault toilets and pressurized water via hand pumps.
  • Spacious back-in sites designed to accommodate various trailer lengths.
  • Direct on-site trail access for motorized vehicles.
  • A gravel boat landing specifically for non-motorized or electric-motor boats.

Each site is carved into the woods, offering a level of privacy that allows you to feel truly alone in the forest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the Flambeau Trail System, which offers over 70 miles of riding for ATVs, UTVs, and off-road motorcycles. For those seeking a slower pace, Sailor Lake is excellent for kayaking and panfishing, particularly for bluegill and perch. Nearby, the Flambeau River offers world-class musky fishing and canoeing opportunities. Nature lovers can also explore miles of hiking trails that wind through the diverse ecosystems of the national forest, offering glimpses of local wildlife like bald eagles and deer.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for off-road enthusiasts who want to maximize their time on the trails without having to trailer their vehicles to a remote start point. It is also a perfect match for self-contained RVers who enjoy dry camping and prefer the sights and sounds of nature over modern resort luxuries. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the great outdoors, this hidden gem in Park Falls is a top-tier choice for your next Wisconsin expedition.

We always love coming back to Sailor Lake Campground! The ability to park your ATV and UTV next to your tent and ride the connected trail system is amazing. The trails are a ton of fun! Each campsite has its own picnic table and fire ring. There is a central water pump house with fresh water and multiple bathrooms throughout the campground.

National forest campground. No electricity, running water bathrooms, or swimmable beach. Potable water/drinking water, firepits, and picnic tables are available for each campsite. Perfect place to tent camp, kayak, and ATV.

Quite rustic, some sites offer ample surrounding vegetation and spacing for good privacy. Several walk-in tent sites with a very short walk from car to campsite are the most private sites on this property. There's no designated beach here. Part of the shoreline is suitable for swimming, but certainly not the best swimming area you'll find on this national forest. Several sites have elaborate fire rings with upgraded cooking features not commonly found in a national forest campground. This campground sees relatively low use. You should be able to find an open site without issue, even on peak season weekends. Advance reservations are accepted for some sites but you can also just show up, pick a site, and avoid the reservation system fee.

Nicely kept quiet campground. No electric. There is a well for drinking water. No dump station. Pit toilets. Mostly wooded. Good panfish fishing.
