Cheraw
Overview
Cheraw State Park holds a special place in South Carolina history as one of the original parks developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Nestled within the rare sandhills ecosystem, the park covers several thousand acres of towering longleaf pines and the serene Lake Juniper. It offers a peaceful atmosphere where historic craftsmanship meets classic outdoor recreation, providing a quiet retreat for those looking to escape the hustle of city life.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just south of the historic town of Cheraw, the park is immersed in the Sandhills State Forest. This unique landscape features rolling sandy hills and dense woods that create a secluded environment for camping. The park is centered around the 360-acre Lake Juniper, providing a tranquil waterfront backdrop that remains one of the most scenic inland destinations in the state, characterized by cypress trees draped in Spanish moss.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Cheraw State Park offers 17 designated sites that provide water and electrical hookups suitable for both RVs and tents. Visitors have access to essential facilities including a central bathhouse with hot showers and a convenient dump station. A major highlight for many guests is the 18-hole championship golf course, which is integrated into the natural landscape, along with various picnic shelters and a community house for larger gatherings.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Lake Juniper Boardwalk, which offers stunning views of the water, or rent kayaks and canoes to paddle among the cypress knees. The park is a premier destination for birdwatchers, as it is a known habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. For a change of pace, the nearby town of Cheraw features a beautiful historic district, local shops, and landmarks celebrating its heritage as the birthplace of jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and golfers who prefer an intimate, rustic setting over large commercial resorts. The smaller campground size ensures a sense of privacy and quiet, making it perfect for solitude seekers and families looking for an authentic outdoor experience. If you appreciate historic parks with plenty of room to breathe and natural beauty to explore, this South Carolina gem is an excellent choice for your next trip.

You'd be hard pressed to find another public golf course more tranquil and less expensive in the Pee Dee area. Also, the club house is attractive and the fairways are manicured to resemble putting greens. Wow! The state sponsored camping and golfing grounds offer picturesque views from every angle. Take few photos and you won't be disappointed. By the way, if you've never seen one, you'll find the fox-squirrels interesting at Cheraw State Park too.

Absolutely beautiful and peaceful campground... Unfortunately we picked a weekend where we could barely breathe as the weather was close to 100 each day, we would highly recommend it & we definitely will go back
