Chestnut Ridge Park & Campground
Overview
Chestnut Ridge Park & Campground offers a classic West Virginia woodland experience across 155 acres of lush, mountainous terrain. Unlike high-density commercial resorts, this facility focuses on providing a peaceful mountain retreat where nature takes center stage. Managed by the Monongalia County Recreation Commission, it serves as a year-round destination for those seeking fresh air and easy access to the rugged Appalachian outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Bruceton Mills, the park sits at a high elevation, offering cooler summer temperatures and a dense canopy of hardwoods. It is uniquely positioned adjacent to Coopers Rock State Forest, providing visitors with thousands of additional acres of wilderness to explore. The drive into the park takes you through winding roads that showcase the scenic beauty of Preston County, making the location feel far removed from city life despite its convenient proximity to Interstate 68.
Amenities & Park Features
The park caters to various camping styles, offering electric and full-hookup RV sites alongside primitive tent areas and cozy log cabins. Families often gather at the spring-fed swimming lake or the designated fishing pond, which are focal points of the property during the warmer months. Practical features include well-maintained bathhouses, multiple playgrounds, and a community dining hall. During the winter season, the park remains a local favorite thanks to its dedicated snow tubing hill and warming hut.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers are just minutes away from the iconic overlooks at Coopers Rock, which offer breathtaking views of the Cheat River Gorge and miles of technical hiking trails. For a change of pace, the vibrant city of Morgantown and West Virginia University are only a short drive west, providing access to diverse local dining and cultural events. Visitors can also explore the West Virginia Botanic Garden or take a scenic drive to see the historic architecture throughout the surrounding mountain towns.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature lovers and families who prefer a quiet, forest-centric atmosphere over a busy resort-style commercial park. It is a fantastic choice for those looking to disconnect from digital distractions and reconnect with the outdoors through hiking, fishing, and campfire conversations. Because of its scenic layout and proximity to major state landmarks, it also serves as a perfect home base for Appalachian road trippers looking for an authentic West Virginia experience.

Do not bring a larger camper down in Area E…. FYI - spots in E are not level. You would even have a rough time getting a camper in a few. HORRIBLE MUD!!!! Had to use 4wheel drive to get in our spot. Remained of park looks nice. They have fishing ponds, playground, and even a basket ball goal.

I found this recommendation through ChatGPT oddly enough. With coopers rock so close it’s a great spot to go to. They have 2 stocked lakes that require no permit. I actually caught a nice small mouth first cast. Camp store was nice. Firewood available but expensive. Bring your own. The shower house seems to be recently renovated and the men’s room seemed to be pretty clean. Ladies room mentioned that there were some things needing cleaning. Would recommended daily look over. However I was pleased and rank as my top camp shower as others have been way worse trust me. This is luxury lol. Nice and quiet for the most part. We think we were hearing geese at night what seemed to be about 2-300 yards north of us. They weren’t annoying but you could hear them. Our conclusion was Canadian geese migrating and mating. We didn’t investigate so not sure. Great spot here would def recommend. Nice and clean and spacious!

It was a really nice park. We are on a road trip from Cincy to DC and back, and we just needed a stopping point. The bathrooms were clean, the sites were private and not crowded, there was an unexpected swimming hole at the local pond. One not fun part- getting our popup into the site. It’s a back in, but there isn’t any turnaround space. The woman checking in told us that some people choose to back in the whole road, others get turned around at the shower house and back in the rest of the way. we took the second option, and even just that put my husband’s backing skills to the test. But he did it!!

I have loved this place all of my life, and I will be 50 years old soon, throughout many many changes and rules, and new rangers, my family donated this land many moons ago to the state, so that we all could enjoy the beautiful outdoors, wildlife and the 2 lakes/ ponds and the fun used to be fishing, the past riding our bikes up and down the ski slopes etc,no matter how many more strict rules in place, it's still a great peaceful getaway! My family and I have had many memories here, and not to forget my grandma being born here, and going to school in the old school house, many wonderful things to do and make memories

My girlfriend and I came to camp here on Easter weekend and had a WONDERFUL time. The park was so clean and our site (as well as most others) had a very nice tent pad for set up. My only "complaint" would be that the roads between campsites are quite rough, but that didn't detract from the magic that we encountered here. We will DEFINITELY be returning!

Campground is nice. Spots are very close but that’s alright as most people kept to themselves. The office/store is very nice and the workers are friendly and seem happy to be there. Nice to walk in the morning along the pond. The playgrounds seemed well equipped for children. The only problem we had was a large group of campers coming before our last night and telling us we were in their spot even though we were in the spot directly behind our numbered stake. It was after hours and we didn’t feel like arguing so we just cut the trip short and left that night. Other than that, this campground is affordable and well kept. I would return if the need to return to the area presented itself.

We had a wonderful family camping trip over a long weekend here. Even when it stormed the whole last day we had a great time playing with the kids in the rain. When the weather was nice there were small playgrounds we could use. The camp sites were lovely. A good distance away from our neighbor campers. Each site had a big fire pit, surrounded by trees. The shower house was very nice and clean. I love being surrounded by nature and we had a beautiful weekend.
