Chewing Black Bones Campground

Overview

Located on the scenic shores of Lower Saint Mary Lake, Chewing Black Bones Campground offers a unique cultural and natural experience. This facility is owned and operated by the Blackfeet Nation, providing visitors with a meaningful connection to the local heritage and landscape. It serves as a spacious and welcoming basecamp for travelers exploring the rugged beauty of Northern Montana. The atmosphere is relaxed and authentic, focusing on the preservation of the land and the sharing of Blackfeet culture through its on-site tipis and traditional setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Babb, MT, the campground provides an ideal location for those visiting the eastern side of Glacier National Park. The park is nestled along the Rocky Mountain Front, where the Great Plains meet the soaring peaks of the Continental Divide. Staying here means you are just minutes away from the Saint Mary entrance, offering a quieter alternative to the more congested areas of the park. The views of the surrounding mountains reflecting off the lake provide a stunning backdrop for every campsite, making it a photographer's paradise for sunrise and sunset captures.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground caters to various travel styles, offering a mix of full-hookup RV sites and rustic tent areas. To ensure a comfortable stay for long-distance travelers, the park provides essential facilities including:

  • Traditional Blackfeet tipi rentals for a unique lodging experience.
  • Modern restroom facilities and hot showers.
  • A private boat launch and beach access for water recreation.

On-site laundry services are also available to help travelers refresh during their journey. The sites are generally spacious, accommodating larger rigs that might struggle with the tighter turns found inside the national park campgrounds.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the proximity to Glacier National Park, specifically the Many Glacier and Saint Mary valleys. Visitors can spend their days hiking the Grinnell Glacier trail or driving the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road. Just a short drive north, the Chief Mountain border crossing leads to Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada. Locally, the area is rich with wildlife viewing opportunities, where guests often spot bears, elk, and eagles. The campground serves as a perfect hub for alpine hiking and exploring the sacred sites of the Blackfeet people.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for RVers who value proximity to nature and cultural immersion over high-end resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for an educational experience and outdoor adventure in a quiet environment. Big-rig owners will find the open layout more accessible than many surrounding mountain parks. If you prefer a peaceful lakeside vibe and want to support tribal tourism while being close to the majestic trails of Glacier, this location is a perfect fit for your Montana itinerary.

Spacious CG. Perfect when visiting Eastern side of Glacier National Park. The location is perfect if you are exploring Saint Mary & Many Glacier.

My group of friends tent camped at Chewing Black Bones in late July 2025. Service was good. I easily made a reservation online. I had to call twice - once to clarify something in my confirmation email, and once because we ended up arriving later than anticipated. I would describe the customer service experience of these phone calls as a bit curt but ultimately effective in that I got my questions answered. The campground has an absolutely fantastic location with gorgeous scenery. We had no problems finding our site. The ground wasn't the most even, but we are backpackers so we've dealt with far worse. Our stay came after the supposed bathroom renovation. The bathrooms were decently clean by campground standards (some bugs but it's not like you can keep them all out since they're attracted to the lights), and the bathrooms closest to our site had plenty of toilet paper and hand soap. That said, I can see why people might be turned off by them. The toilet bowls and shower tiles have yellow/brown stains - not because of human waste, but more like rust/other mineral stains. Again, they weren't dirty or unsanitary per se, but the appearance does have a bit of an ick factor. I think people would not have these complaints if the campground got some new toilets and redid the shower tiling. Overall, we found Chewing Black Bones to be fine for our one-night stay. No, it's not the Ritz Carlton of campgrounds, but if you are looking for something free of nature (e.g., bugs) or completely pristine, you should probably be at a hotel instead. If you're hiker trash like us, or if you have a camper and use your own "facilities," you will probably love this place because the location/scenery and value are really quite unbeatable for the area.

Tent Campers BEWARE — Absolutely Disgusting Bathrooms 🤢🤢🤢 Updated July: If you care even a little about cleanliness, DO NOT stay here. The bathrooms and showers are hands-down the worst I’ve ever seen at any campground. There were hundreds of dead bugs in and around the sinks. One sink was covered by thick, murky grime I couldn’t even identify. Toilets were filthy. Showers were stained with rust-colored streaks and smelled strongly of metal and mildew. The water even had a rusty taste. And get this — they just “renovated” the place two weeks ago. Hot water was the only good part. But honestly, it didn’t make up for how gross everything else was. I kept wondering if the host has ever actually tried using those sinks or toilets — I doubt they’d last more than a few seconds in there. The lake view was nice, but none of that matters when the basic facilities are so neglected. The whole place feels abandoned and unkept. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. Not now, not ever. Spend your money somewhere that actually cares.

Beautiful place. Forget older reviews, recently under new management and it shows! Shower and toilet enovations are in the works, but we had motorhome and were no affected. Right on St. Mary's Lake with Glacier beyond. We were fortunate to listen to Blackfeet presentation, which should be happening again in July. What a panoramic view!

We stayed for just one night and dry camped. The serene landscape brought a deep sense of peace and calm. The grass was well-maintained, and access to the lake was extremely easy. Although we didn’t use any of the accommodations (such as restrooms), we had no issues using the dump station. The host manager was very polite and welcoming. We definitely would have stayed longer if we had more time!

A beautiful campground along St Mary lake. Has great views and a peaceful setting. Very helpful and kind staffs as we got our package delivered to them few days before we checked in so we were able to fix our RV in time. Would rate it 5 star if they renovate their facilities especially the showers/restrooms.

We recently stayed two nights at the Chewing Black Bones Campground in Babb, Montana. We stayed at two different sites. The campground offers great scenery, and grass camping is much better than pavement, gravel, or dirt. I enjoyed staying here. My only complaint was that the dump station was plugged or full on the first night, and we could not dump. Additionally, only some sites had water hookups, and the electrical panels in both sites were positioned on the wrong side, so we had to run the power under the RV. This RV Park has so much potential if they would invest back into it. Despite these issues, the natural beauty and friendly atmosphere make it worth a visit. With some improvements, it could be an outstanding camping destination.

Great location with easy access to the lake and Glacier, but the grounds are poorly maintained. Toilets are non-operational, replaced by porta potties, and the showers are filthy. The visitor center bathroom lacks soap, and paper towels and toilet paper are placed on top of dispensers. The "mini mart" offers little more than a few candy bars, with mostly empty shelves. There is no evident effort to maintain the place. Despite the prime location, it suffers from neglect and lack of reinvestment. Pricing was unclear. "Primitive" tent sites were said to be $25, but a site without electric or water, labeled as a tent-only site, was actually $40 upon arrival. The family managing the office seems disengaged, with kids playing video games and taking food from the mini mart, likely contributing to the empty shelves. Overall, this could have been a great stay but fell short, and we did not feel it was worth the cost. We left after one night instead of staying the planned second night.

Let's see. First of all it's so beautiful and surrounded by trees (instead of being exposed to the highway). It's beyond easy to find access to the water. The picnic areas are very open so there is lots of room for yard games as well and family meal sit downs. I feel like the toilets (port a potties) are not always serviced and the in door toilet where we were picnicking was not in order. The boat ramp is available and there is a small dock just be mindful of anyone in the water when launching.

This property could have easily been the best campground I’d ever been to but unfortunately neglect and lack of upkeep made it the absolute worst. There were 3 bathroom buildings on the property and 2 of them were out of service. The one that was operational was a health risk. Holes all over the walls, half the faucets/toilets/showers did not work. No soap or paper towels. There was a play structure in the middle of the property that had blown over and was just falling apart. The grass had not been mowed in months, no firewood for sale so we were told to just pull some sticks out of the woods to burn. There were broken and leaking water hook ups at some sites. There was a boat launch but the dock was half underwater, an old walking bridge that was torn down with just caution tape around it, a giant concrete foundation with open 4’ deep holes in the ground. The property was huge and we were placed in the back corner of a field. No wind blocks so the wind was absolutely crazy. The place was empty so It would have been much nicer if we were up towards the wood line in the front to block the wind.
