Chief Logan
Overview
Chief Logan State Park offers a serene mountain getaway in the heart of West Virginia’s southern coalfields. As one of the state's most popular destinations, it provides a balance of modern convenience and rugged natural beauty. The RV campground is well-regarded for its full-hookup sites, allowing travelers to enjoy the wilderness without sacrificing essential comforts. Whether you are visiting for the famous outdoor theater or the world-class trail systems, the park serves as a lush, green home base for exploring the Appalachian highlands.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled in the rolling hills of Logan County, the park is characterized by deep valleys and steep, forested ridges. Its location provides a true Appalachian forest experience, where the morning mist clings to the trees and the air is noticeably cooler than in the surrounding valley towns. Despite its secluded feel, the park is easily accessible from US 119, making it a convenient stop for those traveling through the West Virginia mountains. The surrounding landscape is dominated by mature hardwoods, offering a cool canopy during the summer and vibrant foliage in the autumn.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Chief Logan is designed with the modern RVer in mind, featuring 25 full-hookup sites that accommodate water, sewer, and electricity. On-site facilities include a clean shower house, laundry machines, and a nearby dump station for added convenience. Beyond the campsites, the park boasts a seasonal swimming pool with a water slide, multiple playgrounds, and well-maintained tennis courts. Visitors can also dine at the full-service restaurant located within the park’s lodge, providing an easy alternative to campfire cooking after a long day of outdoor adventure.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers will appreciate the proximity to the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, specifically the Bearwallow system, which is a major draw for ATV and off-road enthusiasts. For a dose of local culture, the park hosts the outdoor drama "The Aracoma Story" at its amphitheater and houses the Museum in the Park, which showcases regional history and art. Hiking enthusiasts can explore several miles of trails that wind through the hills, while families often gather at the miniature golf course or the fishing pond for relaxed afternoon entertainment.
Who This Park Is Best For
Chief Logan is an ideal destination for family vacationers who enjoy a structured environment with plenty of recreational activities to keep children engaged. It also appeals strongly to off-road enthusiasts looking for a comfortable place to park their rigs while tackling the nearby trail systems. If you prefer a park that blends the quiet of the woods with the reliability of full utility hookups, this state park offers the perfect middle ground between a rustic forest camp and a commercial resort.

Website clearly said animal park was open and after 45 minutes of driving the kids were very disappointed that the guy was closing the gates on us at 2:37pm on a Friday. Not happy.

Great campground with alot of things to do. Alot of hiking trails. Beautiful scenery and a good amount of wildlife. Campground is somewhat lacking and the bathrooms and showers are pretty nasty, old, and need help. The sites are average and the trash cans are emptied regularly. The pool at the park is kind of unclean. The bathrooms and changing areas look as if they are not cleaned regularly. The amount of debri on the bottom of the pool is pretty bad. The pool is filled with a pump that is taking water out of the small stream beside it. Just seems slightly unsanitary. The wildlife sanctuary is sad and does nothing but make you feel for the few poor animals in those small Cages. The museum is interesting. The park has many playgrounds and pavilions for get togethers. A very nice amphitheater is also located here.

We just basically drove thru, but what we saw was beautiful. I wish we'd been there on the right day, to see the play. I did appreciate their tribute to the coal miners lost in the largest mining accident.

This park was part of my 1 month plan to visit West Virginia’ State Resort Parks campgrounds with my MB Sprinter motor home. Arriving on Sunday produced plenty of vacancy’s and even allowed me the so see the final night’s performance of the musical Annie at its outdoor Amphitheater. ($12). The Park is very extensive but with plenty of steep and windy mountain roads to navigate. The lodge was a good respite from the 90+ degree daily temperatures and it’s upscale restaurant allowed me the opportunity of NOT having to cook one night with a delicious Rainbow Trout supper for under $20. There is an interesting and free museum at the park office building which profiles WV history with regard to its coal mining industry and its many disasters, strikes and floods. To quote a song from Annie, “Its a hard knock life”. Unfortunately the Wildlife Exhibit was closed during my 3 day stay.

Chief Logan State Park is such a beautiful campground with an incredible drive in as well. The sites were clean and tidy and the restrooms/shower were well taken care of. There is a fire ring provided as well as full size metal trash cans at each site which was quite nice. There are wild deer roaming the ground and some really cool sites to see on property along with the neat little creek that ran behind my site. I would definitely stay here again in the future if I was back in the area!
