Chippewa/South Pike Bay

Overview

South Pike Bay Campground offers a quintessential Northwoods experience located along the pristine shores of Cass Lake. As part of the Chippewa National Forest, this destination is famous for its towering stands of old-growth red pines that provide deep shade and a sense of seclusion. Travelers visiting this part of Minnesota will find a peaceful environment that balances natural beauty with the convenience of managed facilities, making it a staple for those exploring the Great Lakes region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the southern edge of Pike Bay and the larger Cass Lake, the park is surrounded by one of the largest concentrations of bald eagles in the lower 48 states. The terrain is characterized by level ground and massive Norway Pines, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere. Its position allows for easy access to the water while remaining tucked away from the busier commercial areas of Cass Lake, MN, offering a true forest escape for weary travelers.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped for RV travelers, offering several loops with electric hookups and paved parking pads that accommodate various rig sizes. Each site provides a rustic feel without sacrificing essential conveniences. Key features include:

  • Direct access to the 18-mile paved Migizi Trail.
  • A dedicated boat ramp and swimming beach area.
  • Fire rings and picnic tables at every site.
Visitors also have access to pressurized water and clean vault toilets throughout the grounds, ensuring a comfortable stay while immersed in the wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the world-class fishing for walleye and northern pike on Cass Lake. A short distance away, the Migizi Trail offers a scenic loop through the forest for cyclists and hikers. Visitors can also explore Star Island, which is unique for having its own lake within the island, or take a short drive to the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Itasca State Park, which is a popular day trip for those staying in the area.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature-focused RVers who prefer a quiet, forest-centric environment over a resort-style atmosphere. It is a perfect fit for birdwatchers and photographers hoping to spot eagles and loons in their natural habitat. Families who enjoy active outdoor recreation like biking and boating will find plenty to keep them busy, while the spacious sites provide the privacy desired by those looking to unplug and relax under the pines.

Our family has been coming here for closing in on 15 years now, such a perfect place to relax and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. Large camping spaces or small, camper or tent. The perfect place to refresh your soul.

Please stop reserving all the lake side spots and not showing up. This is a very popular campground with a fun host. However, it's very rustic and the good spots get reserved right away.

No firewood available at the campground this year so hit Teals on the way. No swimmers itch yet and the perch are biting.

Lovely clear lake with nice large campsites. Vault toilets, no electricity, potable water from a hand pump. Great paved bicycle trails, including Migezi (around Cass Lake) and MRT (Mississippi River Trail). Nice paddling on the lake.

Great campsites on the lake. Not a lot of amenities but worth it to have your own private beach at each campsite.

Overall we enjoyed how secluded this lake was. There were plenty of trees making the campsites quite private. There were plenty of trees so we could set up our hammocks. We had to walk through other campsites to get to the lake but they had little trails between the other campgrounds so it was ok. My biggest disappointment was that the lake that is right next to it was not very 'swimable' it had huuuge leeches. However, at night we did see tons of tiny cute little frogs. The campsites were clean and well taken care of, with lots of area to set up the tents. The bathrooms were clean and had plenty of toilet paper. If you are looking for a spot to just relax, cook and have some privacy - this is the place to go! There are a few good swimming lakes nearby that you can drive to. They also sell firewood, cheap and a lot of wood. We will be back!
