Chiricahua National Monument/Bonita Canyon
Overview
Nestled within the spectacular Wonderland of Rocks, Bonita Canyon Campground serves as the only overnight lodging option within the Chiricahua National Monument. The area is renowned for its vertical rock spires and unique geological features that have been carved by elements over millions of years. This quiet retreat is managed by the National Park Service and offers a unique opportunity to wake up surrounded by massive rhyolite pinnacles and ancient volcanic history. It provides a peaceful base for those looking to explore one of the most striking hidden gems in the Arizona park system.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 37 miles southeast of Willcox, the campground is tucked into a shaded canyon at an elevation of 5,400 feet. The environment transitions from high-desert scrub to lush oak and pine forests, providing significant shade and cooler temperatures than the surrounding valley. The landscape is dominated by vertical rock spires and balanced stones that create a dramatic, prehistoric atmosphere for every visitor. The remote location ensures dark night skies, making it a premier destination for stargazing enthusiasts and those seeking true desert silence.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features 25 individual campsites with paved pads designed for smaller vehicles. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the individual sites, guests have access to potable water and well-maintained flush toilets throughout the facility. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. It is important for RVers to note that the maximum combined length for vehicles is strictly limited to 29 feet, and there is no dump station located within the monument boundaries.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors are just a short drive from the eight-mile scenic Bonita Canyon Drive, which leads to the breathtaking Massai Point overlook. For active travelers, the Echo Canyon Loop offers an immersive hike through the heart of the rock formations, providing close-up views of the famous hoodoos. Additionally, the Faraway Ranch Historic District provides a glimpse into the early 20th-century history of the area, featuring a preserved ranch house and beautiful gardens. Birdwatching is also a popular activity, as the canyon attracts unique species from both the desert and the mountains.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and photographers who value solitude and proximity to trailheads over modern resort luxuries. Because of the size restrictions on the pads, it is best suited for those in small travel trailers, camper vans, or shorter Class C motorhomes. It appeals most to travelers looking for a rustic camping experience where the primary focus is exploring the rugged outdoors and connecting with the natural world. If you prefer a quiet environment where the wind through the pines is the primary soundtrack, this is your spot.

The visitor center is a few minutes in as you drive in from the toll booth. The parking was super limited and was already full even on a weekday. There's an accessible sidewalk, including a ramp up to the entrance. The exhibit room is single floor accessible, and they had various displays on the area- very nice mini museum. They also sell a nice assortment of snacks. The visitor center is close by the forested section of the park's trail.

We were vertical surprised at how unique the park.was. We had never heard of it before. We were looking for a place to go next, and Alltrails had several good looking hikes there. So we went, and are very glad we did it was wonderful - so interesting. Bryce on steroids.

Great place to visit! Staff was great! Everything clean! Views were amazing! Not busy but the weather was a bit cold and rainy so people may have stayed home. Really a hidden gem in southern AZ a lot like Bryce Canyon but not as colorful but the views were every bit as nice to me.

Such an underrated park! Beautiful, quiet, and the best part not many people!!! Definitely recommend the view from Sugar Loaf and then doing the canyon loop for alternative perspectives. While the park is small and not busy, the parking lots are also very very small. Highly recommend getting to the loop parking lot before 8:30am on a weekend if you want parking. There are not many spaces. We didn’t have any issues parking at SugarLoaf. Seriously such a great park! We loved it!

Beautiful rock formations. Very informative visitor center with friendly hosts. Entrance is free. It is about a 6 mile drive through the park. One way in, same way back out. Places to stop and walk with great views. Less than 4 hrs from Phoenix. Spend the night in Wilcox. Quite a few wineries and nice restaurants around.

For most of us, this would be a once in a lifetime experience, not to be missed. Both short and long hikes are at 5800 to 7300 ft elevation. Loose rock and boulders on the trails, some pretty steep. Walking sticks are highly recommended.

Popular campground with limited spaces. It can be a challenge to get a reservation at this campground, but well worth the stay. Spaces are small. Not recommended for large rigs. Plenty of different hiking trails for a range of physical capabilities. Lots of shade in the campground. Drinking water is available. Hot water showers and clean restrooms.

Wow! An underrated gem! There are trails for everyone, but most are moderate to difficult. But most of the scenery can be seen from the parking lots and pull offs. Drive to the top of the mountain is steep, we saw a car pulled off that had overheated, so be aware of that. Also you should go back to Wilcox instead of going down the dirt road over the mountain when returning to I-10. Very helpful staff!
