Chugach/Cooper Creek

Overview

Cooper Creek Campground offers a classic Alaskan wilderness experience within the Chugach National Forest. Located in the picturesque community of Cooper Landing, this campground is divided into North and South sections, both providing a tranquil escape under a thick canopy of spruce and cottonwood trees. It serves as a prime basecamp for those looking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Kenai Peninsula without the distractions of modern development or high-traffic resorts.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated at the junction of Cooper Creek and the Kenai River, making it a focal point for water-based recreation and scenic views. The surrounding landscape is characterized by turquoise glacial waters and towering mountain peaks that define the region. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by lush greenery, where the sound of rushing water provides a constant, soothing backdrop to their stay. Its central location makes it an ideal stop for those trekking between Anchorage and the coastal towns of Seward or Homer.

Amenities & Park Features

As a forest service site, the focus here is on natural preservation rather than luxury. The park features spacious, wooded campsites designed for a peaceful stay. Features include:

  • Hand-pumped potable water available seasonally for guests.
  • Individual sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings.
  • Access to well-maintained vault toilets located throughout both loops.

While there are no electricity or water hookups, most sites are designed to accommodate a variety of RV sizes. The lack of connectivity allows for a true off-grid experience in the heart of the wild.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is the main draw, as the world-class Kenai River is famous for its massive salmon runs and trophy-sized rainbow trout. Just a short drive away, the Russian River Falls offers a chance to see salmon leaping upstream and the occasional brown bear fishing for a meal. For hikers, the nearby Russian Lakes Trail provides miles of scenic paths through the backcountry. Additionally, the stunning Kenai Lake is minutes away, offering breathtaking glacial vistas and opportunities for photography or kayaking.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who value privacy and proximity to nature over commercial amenities. It is a dream destination for anglers looking to stay within walking distance of famous fishing holes. Families who enjoy traditional camping activities like campfire cooking and wildlife spotting will find the environment rewarding. If you prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere where the primary entertainment is the great outdoors, this Chugach National Forest gem is the perfect fit for your Alaskan itinerary.

Right on the river (Cooper Creek North). Not many larger sized sites; but if you have a smaller rig and are lucky to snag a spot, it’s amazing. There’s a bear box per site (didn’t see any bears). Did enjoy watching rafts and drift boats coming down the river. If you see a spot, grab it! Bonus: the best BBQ (Two Brothers), is a short walk away!!

The campground is nice. It had a dual use. It had some parking spots for trailers and 4 tent only spots. It's right on the river and absolutely beautiful. Each spot has its own bench, a bear food locker, and a fireplace with a nice grill to cook with. On a note of the price. It's currently $23 per night, per spot. This is as of May 26th, 2025.

There's a couple reasons to rate this five star. First. It's right on the kenai River and it is absolutely beautiful! Second, it's location is very convenient as it is right on the highway. Quick and easy to pull into and there's local convenience stores in Cooper landing along with gas. They have fire pits with picnic tables and they have bear proof food containers for each site to store anything the bears might want to get into, which is... Absolutely, everything. Seriously never underestimate what the bears can get into. There's a public outhouse and a public can pump well for use at the campsite. Been stopping off here on my way back and forth for over 50 years and each time I enjoy it.

We camped at Cooper Creek Campground South. We had a nice, long pull through, double site which was quite private, a large area with a picnic table, firepit and bear box. The river was nearby. Wild raspberries and currants were growing adjacent to our site. The campground was quiet. $30.00 seemed like a lot when they had no amenities except pit toilets. Not even a water fill or dump station. But we did enjoy the park. We had enough light to use just our solar even though the days were cloudy and/or rainy. Loved the spacing of the campsites. Our AT&T phone had 1 - 2 bars at our site. Didn't work very well for our hotspot.

This is a super cool campground! If you can get a site by the river I highly recommend it! It's a soothing sound to sleep to and you can't beat waking up to those views. Be sure to have a small stash of small bills because paying camp fees/park access in AK often require cash (just FYI).
