Chugach/Ptarmigan Creek

Overview

Ptarmigan Creek Campground, managed by the Chugach National Forest, offers a serene escape into the heart of the Alaskan wilderness. This rustic forest service site provides a tranquil atmosphere for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in nature. Located within the stunning Kenai Peninsula, the park is famous for its proximity to crystal-clear waters and lush alpine vegetation. It serves as an authentic basecamp for exploring the rugged beauty of the region while maintaining a quiet, natural camping experience away from the busier coastal hubs.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at Mile 23 of the Seward Highway near the small community of Moose Pass, the campground sits along the banks of Ptarmigan Creek. The surrounding landscape is characterized by towering spruce and birch trees, with the dramatic, snow-dusted peaks of the Chugach Mountains providing a constant backdrop. The creek itself flows directly into the mesmerizing turquoise waters of Kenai Lake, creating a picturesque environment that feels isolated while remaining conveniently accessible from the main highway corridor.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service facility, the amenities here are basic but exceptionally well-maintained. Travelers will find paved parking pads that can accommodate various RV sizes, though it is important to note there are no utility hookups available. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. Common facilities include vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water stations. The park layout prioritizes privacy, with thick natural foliage providing a buffer between most campsites.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the Ptarmigan Creek Trail, a popular hiking route that offers spectacular valley views and access to alpine meadows. During the late summer months, the creek becomes a prime location for viewing spawning salmon, a quintessentially Alaskan wildlife experience. For those willing to drive twenty minutes south, the city of Seward provides access to Kenai Fjords National Park, the Alaska SeaLife Center, and professional deep-sea fishing charters departing from the harbor.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers and tent campers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern resort luxuries. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts who want immediate access to hiking trails and photography opportunities. Because of the limited facilities and peaceful environment, it appeals most to travelers who enjoy dry camping and wish to experience the authentic, quiet side of the Kenai Peninsula in a majestic mountain setting.

Very beautiful spot to view salmon! However, lots of people fishing there when they aren’t supposed to be. There are clear guidelines on dates/times for fishing. September isn’t listed. U.S. Forest Service should do some rounds in this area.

Great spot for wilderness camping. Cleared, level sites for tenting or parking a camper. No electric or shower hookups. Toilets within easy walking distance. Best to make reservations. Sites fill up quick. Lots of hiking opportunities. Bring bear spray.

Just returned from my yearly weeklong stay at this campground. Enjoyable as always. Lots of privacy from the neighboring sites on the side, but rather direct view straight at the sites opposite, depending on what site you choose. I tend to create a tarp wall so I'm not staring right at someone for a days at a time. Had 1 bar of 4G cell service (Verizon) which was enough to send texts just fine. Not a whole lot of activity to get into nearby, other than the trail to the lake. Near enough to Seward for a day trip for cruises and such. Wildlife spotted this year at the campground: steller jays, squirrel, shrew, rabbit, bald eagle.

Love going here; been here a handful of times. This was one of the only campgrounds that still had a couple sites open and I had been to all the campgrounds from Girdwood to Cooper Landing before headed towards Seward

Secluded and clean. Definitely one of the nicest (and cheapest) primitive sites we have been to!
