Chugach/Russian River
Overview
The Russian River Campground, managed by the Chugach National Forest, stands as one of the most popular outdoor destinations on the Kenai Peninsula. Known worldwide for its incredible salmon fishing, this campground offers a classic Alaskan wilderness experience. It provides a scenic base for travelers who want to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the forest while staying within a short drive of local services in Cooper Landing. The atmosphere is vibrant during peak seasons, fueled by the excitement of the annual fish runs.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at the confluence of the Russian and Kenai Rivers, the park is surrounded by towering spruce and birch forests. The area is a vibrant ecosystem where the turquoise waters of the Kenai meet the clear, fast-moving Russian River. This location serves as a gateway to the vast backcountry of the Chugach National Forest, offering dramatic mountain views and lush, green landscapes that define the Alaskan interior. The sound of rushing water and wind through the trees creates a peaceful backdrop for campers.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic, dry-camping facility that prioritizes a natural atmosphere over modern luxuries. Most sites feature paved parking pads suitable for various RV lengths, though full hookups are not available. The park provides essential facilities including vault toilets, hand-pumped potable water, and fire rings for evening gatherings. Because this is prime wildlife habitat, the park maintains strict bear-resistant storage rules and provides specialized containers to ensure safety for both visitors and the local brown and black bear populations.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Russian River Falls, reachable via a well-maintained hiking trail where visitors can watch salmon jump the falls during their upstream journey. Anglers flock here during the summer months for the legendary sockeye salmon runs. Beyond fishing, the area offers excellent opportunities for white-water rafting on the Kenai River and extensive hiking through the Russian Lakes Trail system, which leads deep into the wilderness for those seeking solitude and high-country scenery.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who value proximity to nature and world-class recreation over resort-style amenities. It is a bucket-list destination for serious anglers and wildlife photographers hoping to capture the essence of Alaska's natural cycles. If you enjoy a peaceful forest setting and do not mind the absence of electricity or sewer connections, this park offers an authentic and memorable stay in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula.

This is a great park in a great location. If you hit the salmon run at the right time you can be right in the middle of the action without having to fight as much for parking. We missed the run by a few weeks, but loved our stay. We have a 44’ fifth wheel and the loops are too tight for our trailer. But we reserved a site right at the entrance to the loop and were able to get in with a little effort. There’s plenty of privacy. We enjoyed our stay and would go back.

Love this park! Beautiful walkway along River. Saw bears, eagles and lots of people fishing . Private campsites. Need reservation but we were able to get one during the height of fishing season. Keep checking website for cancellations.

Sites are wooded, with lots of room between each one. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Very well maintained trails. Easy steps down to the river. Beautiful views in every direction. Fishing is great! Bonus: you might see a bear or two.

I tried to hike the Russian River Falls Trail. The hike was just to hard for my old knees. I wanted to see the bears feeding on sockeye salmon at the falls, they did report about a week earlier bears were there.

We love coming to the boardwalk and seeing the fishermen, or for fishing, or for just walking and bear watching. 🐻 🎣 Bring cash for parking. No credit cards. $10 cash (last time we went).

Do not go on the "Upper Lake" trail!! It is very overgrown, and it doesn't tell you how far it is. We finally went down a dry creek bed to the lake and walked out along the lake. Saw fresh bear scatt and moose tracks, but no animals. It's beautiful, but know it a long hike!

One of our favorite stops camping - highly recommended! We fished for steelhead at the Russian River confluence and it was a fantastic location. Spent time along the river bear watching and relaxing. The river walk is VERY well maintained - a gem of a camping, fishing and day hiking experience.

Gorgeous location. We came early June, no bears seen, but each site has a big bear storage for your coolers and items. The toilets were pit toilets, they did have running water spouts. No garbage so you must carry in and out. Decent mosquitos but they weren't biting. Bring firewood or stop at gwin's for ice and firewood and anything else you need. They are working on the road in so it's gravel in parts. Beautiful place and great hikes.

Love love love this spot! RV lots are spacious and private. Lots of easy access to the Russian River for fishing as well as the confluence. Tons and I mean tons of brown and black bears which we thoroughly enjoyed. Just use common sense and be bear aware! We went towards the end of the first salmon run, early July, which was perfect to avoid the mobs I'd seen just a week or so prior and we still caught fish. Can't recommend this place enough and it's super cheap. No electric or water but we knew that in advance so we're prepared.
