Chugach/Trail River
Overview
Trail River Campground offers a quintessential Alaska camping experience within the vast Chugach National Forest. Situated near the quiet community of Moose Pass, this federal recreation site provides a serene backdrop for RVers seeking a deep connection with nature. Unlike commercial resorts, this is a rustic destination where the glacial blues of the water and the emerald greens of the forest take center stage. It serves as a peaceful, scenic basecamp for those exploring the Kenai Peninsula’s rugged interior while enjoying the serenity of the Alaskan wilderness.
Location & Surroundings
The park is perfectly positioned along the shores of Kenai Lake and the banks of the Trail River. Surrounded by towering peaks and dense spruce forests, the geography here is defined by dramatic elevation changes and crystalline, glacier-fed waters. Its location in Moose Pass provides a much more secluded atmosphere compared to the busier coastal hubs. Visitors can enjoy the crisp mountain air and the rhythmic sounds of the glacier-fed river, making it a prime spot for those who appreciate primitive beauty and mountain solitude.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service facility, the amenities focus on the essentials rather than modern luxuries. The campground features paved loops and gravel pads that can accommodate a variety of RV sizes, though many sites are best suited for small to medium rigs. While there are no utility hookups, guests have access to vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and fire ring, encouraging traditional outdoor living. A boat launch provides easy access for those looking to explore the expansive waters of Kenai Lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this region. Hikers can easily access the nearby Johnson Pass Trail, which offers stunning backcountry views and challenging terrain for adventurous spirits. Fishing is a popular pastime in both the river and the lake, with seasonal opportunities to catch Dolly Varden. For a scenic day trip, the Seward Highway—a designated National Scenic Byway—is just minutes away, offering world-class views and access to the Kenai Fjords National Park just 30 miles south.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize natural scenery over modern conveniences like Wi-Fi or electricity. It appeals specifically to nature photographers, anglers, and families looking to disconnect from digital distractions. If you enjoy boondocking in a managed setting and want a front-row seat to the raw beauty of the Kenai, Trail River is a perfect fit. It is best suited for those who appreciate a quiet, rustic atmosphere and are prepared for a traditional camping experience.

Great cabin. Roomy with a new wood stove that makes it easy to thermoregulate the cabin. Easy hike in and out. Bathroom was close by and easy to get to.

I love love love this campground. We come here every year. Good luck booking those 4 spots with your own lake access because they reserve quick! 😆 The cabin is absolutely beautiful and well kept.

Run by the U.S. Forest Service, it’s a basic campground for $20 a night. There’s no electricity, water connection or dump station - and no cell phone service. The roads are not paved, and many campers drive too fast and kick up a lot of dust. The campground abuts a pristine lake that’s only accessible via individual picnic tables. There are no trails. Many individual sites are shortened by placing two rocks in the driveway, reducing privacy for large RVs. We won’t be back.

Well established camp sites along with many day use picnic area with fire pits. Amazing view of the bluish green glacier waters that flow into the lake.

Such a great campground with clean bathrooms. The public cabin is definitely worth booking, and has direct lake access. There are several loops of campsites with different features (river vs lake), so take the time to look around before picking your spot.

Can be busy during around 4th of July with events in Seward happening. Has typical amenities, bathrooms and water available. Tables in the sites are new and look nice. Expect typical campground noise of RV generators and people just enjoying a fire. Sites are spacious, won't feel cramped. Day use spots are next to the lake.

Camped at the Trail River Campground for five nights. Was at #66 on the Eagle Point Loop. Campsites were very private, with vault toilets and water pumps nearby. Some sites had bear boxes, but most do not. The lake was accessible by a trail by site 73. Luckily there was no bear activity reported. Would love to come back here again and stay at one of the Campsites with lake access.

Booked and paid for a spot months ago online to spend my birthday out camping. Arrived to the location to find out it was right beside a bathroom that smelled and was emanating odor at the camp site. Spoke with the host about either canceling the reservation, or paying for a separate 'first come, first served' site and not getting a refund for the other site. There were several open sites at this time. Host said they preferred not, since others might want to camp there for the full weekend since we were only going to be there until Saturday. We won't be visiting this campground again and are disappointed that the host chose not to be flexible. We left and camped someplace else where there was open availability and nice campsites.

Large park with big rig friendly campsites. On Kenai lake! A great place for kayaking, reading a book on the shore or just soaking up the beautiful big Alaska views.

The road back to the camp ground has a lot of very large pot holes, so be on the look out! We stayed at site #70 and it was a 5 second walk to the lake. I suggest looking up their site map before booking, some sites are not near the lake or river. Nice and private sites, beautiful view just steps away from our site,
