Clear Lake

Overview

Clear Lake State Park is a 290-acre escape located in the heart of the Northern Lower Peninsula. Situated on the shores of a crystal-clear, spring-fed lake, it offers a serene environment for RVers looking to disconnect and enjoy Michigan's natural beauty. The park is nestled deep within the Mackinaw State Forest, providing a secluded atmosphere dominated by mixed hardwoods and towering pines. It serves as a prime destination for those seeking the peaceful surroundings of the region often referred to as the Elk Capital of Michigan, offering a quiet retreat far from the noise of more developed urban centers.

Location & Surroundings

Located just north of Atlanta, Michigan, the park sits within a hilly landscape that is unique to this specific part of the state. The vibrant blue water of Clear Lake is the centerpiece of the park, surrounded by dense forests that transition beautifully through the seasons. The remote location ensures minimal light pollution, making it an exceptional spot for nighttime stargazing and wildlife observation. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by thousands of acres of state land, offering a true sense of wilderness and isolation that defines the Northern Michigan experience.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers approximately 200 campsites, including many sites equipped with 30-amp electrical service to accommodate modern RVs. The campground is thoughtfully designed with several paved sites and pull-through options that make leveling and setup much easier for larger rigs. On-site amenities include a sandy swimming beach, a convenient boat launch for exploring the 133-acre lake, and a dedicated playground for families. Modern restrooms and shower facilities provide essential comforts, while a sanitation station is available for RVers to use upon entry or exit.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Clear Lake-Jackson Lake Trail, a scenic loop perfect for hiking and mountain biking through the forest. The surrounding area is famous for its elk viewing opportunities, especially during the fall when the sounds of bugling can often be heard near the campground. Anglers frequently visit to catch smallmouth bass and northern pike, while the nearby Thunder Bay River offers excellent paddling and trout fishing. For a bit of local culture, the town of Atlanta offers charming diners and essential supplies just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and families who prefer a traditional, quiet camping experience over a high-traffic resort atmosphere. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who enjoy water-based recreation, such as kayaking and swimming, as well as those interested in wildlife photography. If you are looking for a rugged yet comfortable basecamp to explore the Northern Michigan wilderness while enjoying the tranquility of a spring-fed lake, Clear Lake State Park is a perfect fit for your travel style.

Great spot to take your ATV to. Lots of trails & the park here was amazing. Clean bathrooms & showers. The trails are endless here & we can’t wait to go back after they update everything.

Beautiful lake. Check in was easy but The campground itself…. Trash laying everywhere. Can’t control the people but they were so noisy and disrespectful. The whole 3 days I was here the bathrooms were so dirty and there was no soap the entire time. Most of the paths are overgrown full of ticks and poison ivy. Beach toys everywhere.

This place is breathtaking! I needed a place to stop to finish a work order. I was driving past here and thought, why not check it out? I did not expect the lake to be as beautiful as it is 😍 Definitely going back to camp

Although the weather could have better our group still enjoyed ourselves.Park was clean. Had multiple activities available. A lot of empty spots in the section we stayed in so it was quiet. Kids in enjoyed fishing and playing in sand. We had a waterfront view. Restrooms and showers were clean. Very nice. Would go back again.

We stayed on site 194, it is of decent size and butts up to the woods. There are quite a few walking trails that provide beautiful scenery and lots of ticks, but lack in signs. The office offers souvenirs to buy, such as magnets and Michigan made coffees. There's a disc golf course, beach, and a pavilion; beautiful lake. There's a few boat launches to easily drop in your boat or kayak. We didn't check out the facilities, but showers are available and they looked nice sized.

Absolutely love this camp ground. Lots of sites with plenty of space. Love that they have dump station as well as recycling for cans which goes back into the campground. This camp is located at a trail head. Lots of orv, atv traffic. Tons of trails all around. The bathrooms and showers were amazing. They clean them daily. Showers had lots of pressure and were warm. We stayed from Wednesday to Sunday. This was our first time here and will definitely be coming back. Oh and the lake was clear and refreshing. Was able to find some cool stones here and fossil.

The lake 🏊🏼‍♀️appeared to be a serene blue. The sand was clean and the water was warm. It was very peaceful. We stayed at the campground which has its own private lake🏖that was small and busy. We went over to the day use area and near the disc golf area we found a quiet private spot to relax in the water. During our stay at the campground quiet time was pleasant. The tent worms were prevalent but that is at every campground. One side of the campground was a little less busy than the other side but it is still a 5 ✨campground. If you LOVE kayaking 🚣🏼‍♀️this is the place for you!
