Clinton Lake SRA

Overview

Clinton Lake SRA serves as a premier destination for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Central Illinois. Covering over 9,000 acres, this state recreation area is centered around a massive 4,900-acre reservoir that provides ample space for recreation. The primary camping area, known as Mascoutin Campground, offers a peaceful retreat for RVers who value a connection with nature. Whether you are coming for the water or the woods, the park offers a classic state park experience that balances outdoor activity with quiet relaxation.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in DeWitt, Illinois, the park is conveniently located within a short drive of major hubs like Bloomington and Decatur. The landscape is a characteristic blend of lush woodlands and open prairie, creating a diverse habitat for local wildlife. Because the lake was originally designed as a cooling reservoir, the water temperatures and surrounding ecosystems offer a unique environment for travelers. The area feels secluded and quiet, providing a scenic escape from the faster pace of nearby urban centers and highway noise.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers visiting the park will primarily stay at the Mascoutin Campground, which features over 300 campsites. Most of these sites are equipped with 30-amp or 50-amp electricity, though it is important to note that the park does not offer full hookups. The park provides several essential features for a comfortable stay:

  • Centrally located dump stations and frost-free water hydrants.
  • Modern shower buildings and well-maintained restroom facilities.
  • A dedicated playground and spacious picnic areas for groups.

The sites are generally well-spaced, with many offering shade from mature oak and hickory trees, ensuring a private atmosphere for your stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The reservoir is the star attraction, making boating and fishing the most popular activities for visitors. Anglers frequently visit for the chance to catch crappie, catfish, and walleye. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the park boasts an extensive trail system perfect for hiking and cross-country skiing. A public swimming beach is located just a short drive from the campground, offering a great way to cool off during the summer. Additionally, the nearby town of Clinton provides charming local dining and historical sites.

Who This Park Is Best For

Clinton Lake SRA is an ideal choice for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy self-contained RV camping and water-based recreation. It is particularly well-suited for families looking for a weekend of swimming and hiking, as well as anglers who want to be close to some of the best fishing in the state. If you prefer a rustic and quiet environment over a high-density commercial resort, this park will fit your travel style perfectly. It serves as a fantastic home base for birdwatching and nature photography.

Good place to go but doesn't have full hookups on the whole site. Definitely recommend but not everything is available here.

A beautiful lake side experience in the middle of all the corn fields. The camping site is also nearby which makes this place even more enticing. I wish they had a food cart/truck and a public restroom in this lake area.

It’s pretty some people left trash by the lake don’t litter guys. The trails are decent kinda short and not even slightly challenging. There’s a concrete one for people with disabilities though. But your kinda stuck on the trail the undergrowth is insane

This is a great park. The sites are huge and are gravel and level. Most sites around the lake have walking paths to the lakes edge, however they’re not always an easy walk. The marina is nice and there is a beach there for a small fee. I think the beach should be free for paying campers but it’s only a few dollars extra. The shower houses are fair. They are very dated, but pretty clean. The roads are paved but narrow and there is a bike path thru the main part of the park. The lake is very large and there is no horsepower limit. This makes using any non motorized boats fairly treacherous. We were there to kayak, but we could only go on the north fork of the lake which is a bit of a drive from the campground. The north fork is choked with lily pads so kayaking the entire thing is impossible. It wasn’t even feasible to walk the kayaks around the lily pads as it was just too far. However, the first part of the fork is beautiful and calm. The campground had 3 actual camp hosts which is a great asset. We liked it here and probably will camp here again.

This is your go-to camping/fishing/swimming/hiking/boating location for central Illinois. Have been here several times and it's always a good time. The park has a pre-reservation website to help with scheduling or you can try walk-in if you are short on time. The camp sites have power at each stall, fire pits, water pumps nearby, and outhouses in every loop. There are plenty of hiking trails both well-kept and bush-whacking depending on your needs. The lake is also deep enough for the big sized boats/yachts if that is a need.
