Coconino/Clear Creek

Overview

Clear Creek Campground, nestled within the Coconino National Forest, serves as a refreshing oasis in the high desert of Central Arizona. Located just east of Camp Verde, this destination offers a lush escape where the namesake West Clear Creek provides a cool respite from the sun. The park is characterized by its towering cottonwood and sycamore trees, creating a dense canopy that sets it apart from the surrounding arid landscape. It is a peaceful retreat that focuses on the natural beauty of the Verde Valley.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the Verde Valley, the park offers a unique geographical transition for travelers. While the surrounding area is famous for its rugged mesas and desert scrub, the campground itself feels like a hidden forest. The proximity to the creek means guests can enjoy the sound of running water and a significantly cooler microclimate during the summer months. It is conveniently positioned for those exploring the Coconino National Forest while remaining only a short drive from the local services of Camp Verde.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service site, prioritizing a natural experience over modern luxuries. Visitors will find primitive camping facilities, including vault toilets and seasonal potable water stations. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings under the stars. Because there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites, it is an ideal spot for those who enjoy dry camping in a serene, natural environment without the hum of heavy machinery.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area surrounding the park is rich in both history and outdoor recreation. Just a short drive away is Montezuma Castle National Monument, one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in North America. Guests often spend their days fishing, wading, or swimming in the creek directly from the campground access points. For those willing to drive a bit further, the Out of Africa Wildlife Park and the historic mining town of Jerome provide excellent day-trip opportunities that showcase the diversity of the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

Clear Creek is perfect for nature enthusiasts and self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, rustic atmosphere. Because it lacks high-speed internet and utility hookups, it is best suited for travelers looking to unplug and reconnect with the outdoors. It is a fantastic choice for birdwatchers and hikers who want a scenic and shady home base while exploring the diverse ecosystems and archaeological sites of Central Arizona.

Clear Creek Campground is a beautiful and well-maintained destination that is truly worth visiting. The campground is clean, thoughtfully cared for, and supported by a friendly and welcoming staff. Campsites vary in size, with a mix of reservable sites and first-come, first-served options, making it accommodating for different camping needs. One of the highlights of Clear Creek is the water. It is crystal clear, refreshing, and especially enjoyable during the summer months. The water is conveniently located within walking distance from the campground. While we have also visited during the winter, the colder temperatures make summer the ideal season to fully enjoy the area. The restrooms are consistently clean and well maintained, with regular daily cleaning. Overall, Clear Creek Campground offers a peaceful and enjoyable experience, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing outdoor getaway.

Didn’t make a reservation, but 4 spots available. No services except pit toilets . Was $27/ night in Jan 2026. There was a camp host, sold firewood for$10/bundle.

We came here on Friday the 10th and we were not able to make any kind of reservations and the kid said there was first come first serve spaces when we are rent arrived. The guy was very rude. Was making excuses about renting a spot to us said he had no spaces available and then said he had a certain ones available told us to go look at them, and then when we asked to rent the space, he told us that we were going to be evacuated which we understood about the weather, but it seemed like he was very racial and then he said that there was no kids allowed on the premises which it’s a campground you pay money to enjoy yourself. Kids should be allowed to be on a campground and camping is for kids to play around in and he said that that was not the place. We went to a different place and it was amazing. He should be taught how to have customer service and great attitude with others do not go to this place if I can get zero stars, that’s what it would be absolutely

Great location and the the site was very well maintained (especially the campground). It would have been nice if there were more trees as well. PS. No goons were seen but we had run in with 2 skunks and were overrun with ants

Great campground close to some water to keep it cool during the summer months. Nice shade trees around the campground keep it cool as well. The camp host was really friendly and also ran a tight ship. Kept the noise down and rowdy campers at bay. Cool weekend camping spot! Thanks Loren!

The host was super nice! I love how there’s no music allowed making it family friendly. Day camp and water near by.

My husband and I do dispersed camping a lot but decided to give this spot/"campground" a try. What a terrible idea that was. The campground allows dogs, and we brought our dog, but other camper's dogs were barking all night. In general, this campground is very loud. We booked it for two nights but ended up leaving after one. We booked site 8 which we really enjoyed the location of but our neighbors at site 7 showed up at 8pm and were setting up camp loudly for several hours, not to mention they had a large construction style spotlight facing towards our site. It was a large group and we were not next to any group sites. We attempted to get some sleep around 10:30pm and they were still loud around 3am. We were up at 6am, made breakfast and packed up and left shortly after. This campground is VERY much city camping and I suggest picking a spot off a dirt road and doing dispersed camping for more peace and quiet (and it's free). I have camped in Zion and Havasupai at designated campgrounds with a similar setup, twice the size, in a canyon, and have never experienced a campground that was this loud with guests who have zero campground etiquette.

The host was rude. Maybe didn't have his morning coffee yet. Reservation site was funky but when we got there early morning we found a site with no one in it and no signage saying it was reserved or unavailable. Temporarily parked there and then was walking around with our dogs to see if other sites were available and see the info on the board. Ended up walking to the host's site as he was leaving in his golf cart. He didn't even say hi or ask if we needed help when we are clearly walking up to him. His first words to us were literally "this area isn't open for walking, you can't walk here". No duh... We were coming to get info from you dude... I was taken aback by this for a second before I tried getting some info from him on availability. I guess all sites were taken or reserved which I get that is a bummer but he wasn't even trying to be helpful to us and was just being dismissive when I asked other questions about the empty, unsigned site. Glad we didn't say here with such a rude host.

Best campground I've been to in this area. Nice small size. You can hear the water babbling by. Nice fire rings. Huge trees. Mostly shaded spots. Nice dirt road to stroll on. They have ice and firewood available to purchase. This campground is 100% reservation only as of this writing. Clean bathrooms. And there was good drinking water. Very close to Explore the Camp Verde area. The camp host went out of his way to help me get settled into a spot. Impressed. I definately recommend this spot!
