Colville/Swan Lake
Overview
Swan Lake Campground, managed within the Colville National Forest near Republic, Washington, offers a serene escape into the high-country wilderness. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,600 feet, this destination provides a peaceful setting for those looking to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in nature. It is a rustic forest service site that emphasizes natural beauty over commercial amenities, making it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quiet, authentic North Cascade retreat.
Location & Surroundings
The park is nestled deep within the Kettle River Range, surrounded by dense stands of Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and western larch. Located roughly 15 miles south of the historic mining town of Republic, the campground sits directly on the shores of the 52-acre Swan Lake. The area is known for its rugged mountain terrain and diverse wildlife; visitors often spot loons on the water, deer in the meadows, and the occasional moose wandering near the shoreline.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service facility, the park focuses on the essentials of dry camping rather than luxury infrastructure. While it lacks the hookups of a commercial resort, it provides the following features:
- Vault toilets and potable water access during the peak summer season.
- Individual campsites equipped with picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings.
- A developed boat launch and fishing pier designed for easy water access.
The park is maintained to preserve the wilderness character of the Colville area, ensuring a low-impact camping experience for all guests.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the water, where travelers enjoy trout fishing and paddling in a wake-free environment, as internal combustion motors are prohibited. For hikers, the Swan Lake Trail offers a gentle loop around the shoreline, while more adventurous paths like the Kettle Crest Trail are accessible a short drive away. History buffs can head into the town of Republic to visit the Stonerose Interpretive Center for a unique look at the region’s prehistoric fossil records.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for boondockers and nature lovers who value solitude and access to pristine environments above all else. Because the access roads and sites are somewhat narrow and winding, it is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs and trailers rather than large luxury motorhomes. If you are looking to trade cell service for stunning lakefront views and a quiet mountain atmosphere, this forest hideaway is a perfect match for your travel style.

Easy drive from Republic and the road to Swan is very nice and well maintained. Great beach area and a huge picnic area that gave us shelter from a quick thunderstorm. There is a trail that goes around the entire lake I highly recommend. Lots of fishing holes and we caught a ton of trout. Many areas to stop on boulders for a picnic, etc.

Beautiful area, quiet, plenty of areas to hike and explore. Bring the bug spray!!! And avoid the droppings left by the free roaming cows lol. The cow pies are.. massive.

The "kitchen" is part of the campground, and can be reserved with its own parking lot and fire pit. Campground has loons on the lake and various trails, one to Swan Butte is a must do, but strenuous.
