Copper Falls

Overview

Copper Falls State Park offers a breathtaking blend of natural beauty and historical significance near Mellen, Wisconsin. As one of the most scenic state parks in the Midwest, it is defined by its ancient lava flows and deep gorges carved by the Bad River and Tyler Forks. Visitors arrive to experience the dramatic 1.7-mile Doughboys Nature Trail, which showcases the park's primary water features and impressive historic CCC stonework that blends seamlessly into the landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in the heart of the Wisconsin Northwoods, the park is situated just two miles north of the small town of Mellen. The surrounding area is characterized by dense hardwood forests and rolling hills, providing a tranquil backdrop for RV travelers looking to escape the city. Its proximity to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest ensures that the sense of wilderness extends far beyond the park boundaries, offering a truly remote atmosphere for exploration and wildlife viewing.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features two main campgrounds with sites that accommodate various RV sizes and setups. Many sites offer 30-amp electrical hookups, making it a comfortable choice for modern rigs needing power. On-site facilities include seasonal flush toilets, showers, and a convenient dump station for RV maintenance. During the warmer months, the concession stand near the main picnic area provides supplies, while the historic log buildings offer shelter and a touch of rustic charm for gatherings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The crown jewel of the park is the Doughboys Nature Trail, where hikers can view Copper Falls and Brownstone Falls from several high-point overlooks. For those who enjoy the water, Loon Lake offers a sandy swimming beach and opportunities for fishing or paddling. Cyclists can explore several miles of mountain bike trails, while winter visitors often utilize the groomed cross-country ski paths that weave through the quiet, snow-covered forest and over frozen streams.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize scenic landscapes over resort-style commercial amenities. It is a perfect fit for families looking for a classic camping experience surrounded by geological wonders. Since most sites are designed for medium-sized rigs, it is best for those with standard RVs or camper vans who appreciate a quiet, woodsy environment and direct access to world-class hiking trails.

Gorgeous waterfall and river scenery along well maintained hiking trails. Plenty of lookouts to take photos and rest along the way. The Doughboy trail was beautiful. Enjoyed Loon Lake views as well. State Park near Mellon WI, not far from gas and convenience stores. No dogs allowed on the doughboy trail.

I went September 12th and there was no mosquitos, the park was awesome! The look out tower was a waste of time, I couldn't see anything over the trees. There is a few stairs so it's not for people in poor physical shape. The stone stairs and walls are beautiful and the falls were small but unique and fun. It's very comparable to Amnicon but I liked Amnicon better since I could crawl on the rocks.

Copper Falls State Park is beautiful! We enjoyed our time here doing a few hikes and seeing the beach. To be honest, the star of the show is Brownstone Falls and the Cascades; due to mining a hundred years ago, Copper Falls has collapsed over time and now is far less impressive than Brownstone and the Cascades. However, Copper Falls is still impressive. There are a lot of trails, but honestly the Doughboys Loop is the whole point of the park; most of the other trails are just walks through the woods. The observation tower is overgrown around so all you can see is tree tops but it’s still pretty. Red Granite Falls is unique because you can walk up to it and climb on it (the Cascades and Brownstone and Copper Falls are all, understandably, very fenced around and blocked off), but the trails to Red Granite is just a walk through the woods. Also? The gift shop is stellar. We really liked it even though it’s pretty small. They had great staff there too. Overall, go to Copper Falls state park for a good walk through some woods, and a few very impressive waterfalls!

This is a beautiful park. We very much enjoyed hiking here. The forest was enchanting. The river and waterfalls were quite the sight. I think it would be nice if they maintained a couple trails to the waterfalls. There is a spot or two where you can get to the water. I very much recommend this park. It is quite popular given how remote it is, but it is well worth the trip.

This is the best state park i have been to. The views are top-notch. You won't be disappointed. I came all the way from Indiana to visit this beautiful place. The trails are nice. I took my 6 mouth old in the stroller and was able to do it with some help from my spouse. So you can definitely take kids of all ages to see this beautiful place.
