Coralville Lake - COE/Sugar Bottom

Overview

Sugar Bottom Campground at Coralville Lake offers a premier outdoor experience managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Located along the scenic shores of this expansive reservoir, the park provides a tranquil escape characterized by lush timber and rolling Iowa terrain. It is a destination where the sounds of the forest replace highway noise, making it a favorite for those who appreciate the natural beauty of eastern Iowa’s river valleys.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside the charming town of Solon, Iowa, the park is nestled on the northeastern side of Coralville Lake. The surrounding landscape is dominated by mature hardwood forests and rugged limestone outcroppings that offer stunning vistas of the shimmering water. Its strategic location near the Iowa City-Coralville corridor allows for easy travel while maintaining a sense of deep seclusion, providing a true lakeside sanctuary for regional travelers.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility includes over 200 campsites, many of which are equipped with 50-amp electric hookups to accommodate modern RVs. While the sites are designed to preserve a rustic feel, campers have access to well-maintained shower houses, clean restrooms, and a dump station. Recreational features are abundant, including a nationally recognized mountain bike trail system and a premier disc golf course. Water access is supported by a large swimming beach and multiple boat ramps.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the immediate campground, visitors can explore the Sugar Bottom Day Use Area, which serves as a hub for local hikers and birdwatchers. Fishing for crappie, bass, and walleye is a staple activity on the lake, with many secluded coves to discover. For a change of pace, the Devonian Fossil Gorge is located nearby, offering a unique look at ancient geological formations revealed after historic floods.

Who This Park Is Best For

This COE park is an ideal fit for active families and adventure seekers who want to be steps away from the water and the woods. It is particularly suited for mountain biking enthusiasts and boaters who value immediate access to trails and ramps. If you prefer a nature-centric environment over a commercial resort, Sugar Bottom offers the perfect setting for a quiet, recreation-filled camping trip.

This was a fairly nice campground. A lot of young families and children. It was packed. Plenty of space between the RVs. They maintain the grounds really well. We left this campground for the campground south of the lake, however.

We live right down the road and frequent this campground often for the beaches trails kayaking and disc golf course. Beautifully maintained. Hats off to whomever cleans the rest rooms- they are always super clean.

Wonderful campground overall. It has places to fish, swim, boat, paddle, and watch gorgeous sunsets/sunrises. The only flaw is a decent selection of campsites have a large slope, making it hard for tent camping and lawn chair setup. 4/5 stars

Really like this place. Both beaches were clean. The bathroom and shower facilities were clean. Check-in was painless. Didn't like the fact that they dumped the cleaning water from the bathroom in the grass. They were also mowing at 530 pm and went right through our site while we were cooking other than that recommend this place

Guys I need you to know, you bring your own rooms, and service. Its camping, I was in a camper, but the campground is wonderful, and the fishing isn't bad either!

We love Sugarbottom!! The only recommendations I can give would be to update your bathrooms as they were looking pretty rough this last weekend... maybe a new coat of paint in them plus a shelf in the shower to set your soap and stuff on. Also, adding water to the sites at the back of the campground down by the lake. We will be back though, it's one of our favorite spots.

Too many people/sites. Need more bathrooms, had to wait to use each time I went up there. Need a bigger playground and also add additional playgrounds across the park. Too many kids trying to play on the two little playground there. They did have an educational program the rangers held about snakes that was good and the kids enjoyed. I think they do a different topic every Saturday night.

I travel about 3 hours to this campsite. It's amazing. The primitive sites are very private, the campground has a very friendly atmosphere and the beach was a lot of fun. 10/10 campsite and I've been to quite a few. Will be back next summer.

We got a spot close to the front and it’s more peaceful and quiet compared to sites closer to the boat loading ramp. The shower houses are clean and stocked daily. There’s also a water tub if you need to wash out some dishes or anything you might need water for. You can have your dogs on leashes here. We had our 3 in a gated area near our camper with no issues. Would definitely come back in we are in the area again.

Wonderful host. She was very helpful. The campground is very nice and well maintained. I had an outhouse near my tent site and it was spotless. There was lake access, hiking and biking trails and playgrounds for the kiddies. Bring your National Park Seniors pass and get 50% off the $14 fee (tent - no power). All in all a great stay.
