Crooked River

Overview

Crooked River State Park offers a serene escape into the lush, wild landscapes of coastal Georgia. Situated along the banks of its namesake river, this park provides a quiet environment characterized by ancient maritime forests and expansive tidal salt marshes. Travelers visiting this destination will find a well-maintained facility that serves as a vital sanctuary for local wildlife, providing a peaceful and educational alternative to busier coastal commercial resorts. It is a place where the pace of life slows down to match the gentle ebb and flow of the tide.

Location & Surroundings

Located just minutes from the Florida border in Saint Marys, the park is nestled among stately pines and moss-draped live oaks. Its position on the edge of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway ensures a constant coastal breeze and stunning views of the surrounding golden wetlands. The terrain is notably flat and easy to navigate, making it a stress-free drive for those in larger RV rigs looking to depart from the bustle of Interstate 95 to find a hidden pocket of the Deep South.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 60 spacious campsites equipped with water and electrical hookups suitable for a variety of RV sizes, including several pull-thru options. Most sites offer a high degree of privacy provided by the thick forest canopy. Guests have access to clean bathhouses, laundry facilities, and a convenient dump station. For recreation, the on-site Nature Center showcases local aquatic life, while the boat ramp and fishing pier allow direct access to the river for those looking to explore the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A major highlight for visitors is the proximity to the Cumberland Island National Seashore ferry located in the nearby historic downtown district. On-site, guests can explore several miles of hiking trails, such as the Palmetto Trail, which winds through the dense coastal shrubbery. The park is also a premier location for coastal birdwatching, as it is a recognized stop on the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, where wood storks, herons, and painted buntings are frequently spotted by patient observers.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and photographers who prioritize a quiet, rustic atmosphere over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for an educational outdoor experience or retirees seeking a tranquil home base for exploring Georgia's historic coast. Because of the excellent water access and public ramps, it is also highly recommended for kayakers and anglers who want to navigate the winding tidal creeks and enjoy the solitude of the marsh.

Campsite 15 Very nice! We were on the river, nice view, private. There are 2 loops one side has full hookups. The inner sites are more open. Very flat, well marked. Pull throughs seem quite large. Friendly staff, easy to find, lots of activities, including trails and wildlife blinds. Bathhouse older but in good repair. Bring bug spray! Mosquitos aplenty at night, and ants during the day. But worth a visit!!

This park is super clean and well maintained. The staff and volunteers are very helpful and friendly. This trip was only my husband and I but would love to come back with the grandkids as the hiking trails are very easy and the park area has miniature golf and several play grounds. Restrooms are very clean. You can ride your bike on the paved roads all around the park but there are no areas except on the hiking trails destinated just for bikes. The boardwalk area shown in several pictures is no longer here. It was severally damaged in one of the recent hurricanes. That was our only disappointment. If you like fishing or kayaking this seems to be the place people enjoy for both. Note to be sure if you need a camping site with sewer to carefully choose your site as half the sites do not have sewer hookups. Sites are very spacious if you have a larger RV.

Quick trip to get away a few days and Crooked River didn't disappoint. Camped with my tiny camper. The RV spots were very nicely maintained. Scenic sunsets and sunrises for most of the spots. The trails were lovely. Very easy hikes at this park. Staff and camp host were all very gracious and helpful. Loads of turtles around!

This was an excellent campground! We had a large campsite for our RV with several pine trees for shade. A large space between campsites made it feel more private. The drive and site were crushed rock and it was neatly raked when we arrived. The hosts took good care of this park. It was somewhat expensive since we didn’t have a Georgia parks pass. We may get one for future use! We saw a gopher tortoise crossing the site next to us!

Gorgeous scenery. Large camping sites. There are hiking and biking trails. As for fishing you need to have a vessel to get you on the water as there is only one bank to fish from. The tortoises are here and a lot faster than one would think.

This coastal state park offers a refreshing escape with its beautiful natural scenery. The diverse trails are perfect for leisurely strolls or invigorating hikes. Visitors can enjoy camping under the stars or rent a cozy cabin nestled among the trees. The park also boasts excellent fishing spots along the river and provides opportunities for wildlife viewing. It truly is a cherished destination for creating lasting memories. I've been visiting since I was a kid. I love how peaceful it is.

It was my first time going to a state park in Georgia. I moved from the panhandle of Florida and was raised living in six state parks in Florida. I was very pleased at how well Crooked River was maintained and the cleanliness of the facilities and grounds. Going on a weekday, I found it peaceful and relaxing. Took several trials and had a picnic lunch while there. Will try other parks as time allows. Thanks to the folks at the park for a pleasant visit!

This state park is beautiful. Everywhere we went inside the park appeared to be well maintained. Several trails, picnic areas, open areas and water/fishing access. I ended up renting a cabin within the park, which is a cool feature. Now when we got to the cabin, they expressed to us that these cabins are to be kept clean, organized, etc. I got excited at first, thinking that the cabin would be very nice and we'll maintained. Despite the binder reinforcing everything right inside the door, this place was very dirty. Dust piled up in corners, cobb webs everywhere, the fridge was gross, etc, it made for a not so nice stay. Thumbs up for the park, two thumbs down for the cabins.
