Curecanti/Cimarron

Overview

Curecanti Cimarron is a unique destination within the Curecanti National Recreation Area, offering a peaceful retreat in the rugged landscape of Western Colorado. This location serves as a gateway to the dramatic geology and rich railroad history of the region. Visitors will find a landscape defined by sagebrush hills and the deep canyons of the Gunnison River, providing a rustic camping experience that prioritizes the natural beauty of the outdoors over modern luxuries.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the small community of Cimarron, CO, the park sits at an elevation that offers cooler temperatures and stunning views. It is located at the Cimarron portal, providing easy access to the narrowest and most dramatic sections of the Gunnison River. The surrounding terrain features high-desert plateaus and lush riparian areas, making it a scenic stop for those traveling along the Silver Thread Scenic Byway or exploring the nearby San Juan Mountains.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Park Service facility, the features here are simple yet functional for self-contained RVers. The park provides primitive campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. While there are no utility hookups, the facility offers vault toilets and seasonally available potable water. One of the standout features of this location is the historic train exhibit, featuring a narrow-gauge locomotive and cars resting on the last remaining trestle of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this area. Anglers frequently visit to enjoy Gold Medal fishing on the Gunnison River or to explore the smaller Cimarron Creek. For hikers, the Morrow Point Lookout Trail offers expansive views of the reservoir and dam. The park is also just a short drive from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, where travelers can witness some of the steepest cliffs and oldest rock formations in North America.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-reliant travelers who enjoy a quiet atmosphere and historical significance. It is a perfect fit for smaller RVs or van lifers who do not require electrical or sewer hookups. If you are a history enthusiast or a photographer looking for dark night skies and dramatic landscapes, this location provides a serene home base. It is best for those who want to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with Colorado's wild heritage.

This is a great little campground. It's located just past the Cimarron visitor center. It was quiet, and generally dark at night. My only negative was that the restroom in the campground was closed, meaning a bit of a walk to the restrooms at the visitor center. It was a good place to stay in order to visitor the Black Canyon of the Gunnison since that campground is still closed from the fire.

Great campground. We really enjoyed our stay here. A previous post said there were 2 homeless encampments permanently living here. Not true. There were none here as of this post. There is a 14 day stay limit enforced by the on-site camphost. All campsites are paved & include a picnic table & fire ring. The bathhouse has flush toilets & sinks (no showers.) Potable drinking water at faucets in various spots in the campground. Dump station was not operable. Gorgeous scenery. Quiet & peaceful. FC/FS- no reservations but it's hardly ever full. Trash dumpster, recycling and they even provide doggy bags. Highly recommend!

July 14, 2024. Wanted to stay here. Looked very cool. But there are two groups permanently living in the campground. They were very shady and made my wife very uncomfortable. Didn't feel safe tent camping here. The park service should allow people to live at the campgrounds. Wish I could have stayed looked very cool. Hopefully, they evict the residents.

Great place to go rockhounding! Campground was great! Super clean bathroom facilities. Don’t miss the rock collection at Newberry’s store.

Absolutely one of the best experiences of my life. Very neat camping area, beautiful walk along Cimarron River. If I could give this place 10 stars I would. Campground hosts were very friendly, helpful, and informative.

Excellent little campground. It has clean flushing bathrooms and water spigots throughout park. Excellent hike at end of road with a bridge going over the river. Our toddlers really enjoyed this hike. The trains on display were also a hit with the littles. We easily camped with a 20' travel trailer. There is some road noise but it didn't take away from the setting as there is not a lot of night traffic. My only complaint is the light above the utility room was very bright. It's right next to the bathrooms. the bathroom lights are set in so they were not too bright. This is only an issue for the few sites directly by the bathrooms. It really takes away from the star gazing. We would stay here again.

Great place, small quiet and empty. Near the dam and a great hiking trail. Make sure to stop by Newberry's nextdoor if you forget anything. He has a little of everything. There is no electric or cell service here, but we didn't seem to care. The bathrooms here are really clean too. Definitely worth the stop.

This place is great...showed up later evening and they had a lot of open spots. It was clean, quiet and so convenient. No electricity hookups but it was just a one night stop. I'd go back plus it's close to Montrose 💙
