Curecanti/Elk Creek

Overview

Elk Creek Campground serves as the primary hub for travelers visiting the Curecanti National Recreation Area. Positioned along the northern shore of the expansive Blue Mesa Reservoir, this facility offers a distinct blend of high-desert scenery and water-based adventure. It is managed by the National Park Service, providing a reliable and well-maintained environment for those exploring the rugged landscapes between Gunnison and Montrose. The park's open layout ensures that many campsites offer a sweeping view of the water or the dramatic volcanic cliffs that define this region of Western Colorado.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 16 miles west of Gunnison, the park sits at an elevation of roughly 7,500 feet. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills of sagebrush and gamble oak, with the sapphire waters of the reservoir serving as a stunning centerpiece. Travelers can enjoy dramatic views of the surrounding mesas and volcanic formations, including the famous Dillon Pinnacles that rise sharply against the horizon. Its location along Highway 50 makes it an accessible yet quiet retreat within the Gunnison Basin, offering easy access to both the water and the high country.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is divided into several loops to accommodate different camping styles. While many sites are designed for dry camping, Loop D provides electric hookups specifically for RV travelers. Facilities include flush toilets, seasonal potable water, and a central RV dump station. The proximity to the Elk Creek Marina is a major perk, offering boat slips and rentals, while the nearby visitor center provides educational exhibits and ranger-led programs during peak months. Most sites feature level pads, picnic tables, and fire rings for traditional outdoor living.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water recreation is the primary draw, with the reservoir being a premier destination for fishing and boating. Anglers frequently visit to catch Kokanee salmon and massive lake trout in the deep waters. For those preferring land, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a short drive to the west, offering world-class views of vertical canyon walls. Local hiking trails, such as the Neversink or Dillon Pinnacles trails, provide opportunities to spot wildlife and explore the unique geological history of the Gunnison River drainage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and boaters who prioritize proximity to the water over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a structured, safe environment to introduce children to high-desert wilderness and lake activities. Because of the paved roads and specific RV-friendly loops, it also suits road trippers passing through Colorado who want a scenic, peaceful stopover. It is a haven for those who love a quiet, natural atmosphere without the crowds found in more commercialized resort areas.

A massive reservoir with tons of opportunity for different outdoor activities, be sure to stop by the visitor center as they are so helpful and helping you find the right place for what you’re looking for within the rec area, with some nice gifts and resources as well!!

Beautiful Colorado! Very windy and not friendly for shoreline fishing. The dogs had a blast and the kids waded around in the water for bit. I recommend having a boat or water floating of some sort. Zero amenities and absolutely breath taking scenery.

Beautiful campground, not a bad site to be used. Not too much shade, bring your sunscreen!

Stark beauty, no shower facilities, electric but no water hook ups, older boats with high rental prices, marina restaurant closed, limited traffic access due to bridge construction (no one's fault) was quiet at night, lots of dark sky experiences. Kind camp host, clean bathroom.

Great views and beautiful area to visit. Disappointed hwy 50 was closed until October. So we weren't able to reach the Dillon Pinnacles trailhead to hike.

Great place to camp out. The sights and sounds are spectacular. Spaces are clean and ample amounts of space. I strongly recommend you stake your tent. The wind currents can be vicious, and also, watch out for nature. The little red Robin, magpie, crows, and chipmunks work as a team to go thru and pillage your camp if you leave it unattended. The best thing about this campground is the restrooms.

Windy mountain beaches. Lots of likable spots around the lake, but I liked the Bay of Chickens best. Cool, calm water lapping up the shore, facing the western sun, armada of chicken cloud-gods soaring through the skies—what’s not to like?
