Curecanti/Lake Fork

Overview

Located along the western edge of the expansive Blue Mesa Reservoir, Curecanti’s Lake Fork area offers a rugged and scenic escape for RVers. As part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, this location provides direct access to Colorado's largest body of water. It is a high-altitude destination where the sagebrush landscape meets deep blue waters, offering a serene environment for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of the Gunnison River basin.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated approximately 25 miles west of Gunnison, CO, perched above the Lake Fork Arm of the reservoir. The surroundings are characterized by dramatic volcanic cliffs and rolling hills. Its position near the Blue Mesa Dam makes it a gateway to the western reaches of the recreation area. Visitors can enjoy wide-open skies and clear views of the surrounding mesas, providing a quintessential Western Colorado backdrop for every sunset over the water.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional National Park Park Service facility designed for those who appreciate a rustic experience. While there are no hookups, the park provides paved sites that can accommodate a variety of RV lengths. Key features include potable water stations and a seasonal dump station located nearby for convenience. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, allowing for classic campfire evenings under some of the darkest night skies found in the region.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the primary draw here, with the Lake Fork Marina offering boat rentals and supplies just a short distance away. Anglers frequently visit to test their luck with lake trout and kokanee salmon in the deep reservoir waters. For those looking to explore on foot, the Dillon Pinnacles Trail offers unique geological formations and stunning reservoir views. Additionally, the East Entrance of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is within easy driving distance.

Who This Park Is Best For

Lake Fork is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize access to nature and water sports over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for boaters and fishermen who want to be steps away from a deep-water launch ramp. If you enjoy dry camping in a peaceful, scenic environment with plenty of space between neighbors, this park offers the quietude and outdoor adventure that defines the Colorado high country experience.

A massive reservoir with tons of opportunity for different outdoor activities, be sure to stop by the visitor center as they are so helpful and helping you find the right place for what you’re looking for within the rec area, with some nice gifts and resources as well!!

Beautiful Colorado! Very windy and not friendly for shoreline fishing. The dogs had a blast and the kids waded around in the water for bit. I recommend having a boat or water floating of some sort. Zero amenities and absolutely breath taking scenery.

Beautiful campground, not a bad site to be used. Not too much shade, bring your sunscreen!

Stark beauty, no shower facilities, electric but no water hook ups, older boats with high rental prices, marina restaurant closed, limited traffic access due to bridge construction (no one's fault) was quiet at night, lots of dark sky experiences. Kind camp host, clean bathroom.

Great views and beautiful area to visit. Disappointed hwy 50 was closed until October. So we weren't able to reach the Dillon Pinnacles trailhead to hike.

Great place to camp out. The sights and sounds are spectacular. Spaces are clean and ample amounts of space. I strongly recommend you stake your tent. The wind currents can be vicious, and also, watch out for nature. The little red Robin, magpie, crows, and chipmunks work as a team to go thru and pillage your camp if you leave it unattended. The best thing about this campground is the restrooms.

The area is perfect for fishing enthusiasts, with plenty of opportunities to reel in some great catches. Overall, a fantastic place to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy the great outdoors. Highly recommended for a peaceful and scenic getaway!

Windy mountain beaches. Lots of likable spots around the lake, but I liked the Bay of Chickens best. Cool, calm water lapping up the shore, facing the western sun, armada of chicken cloud-gods soaring through the skies—what’s not to like?
