Custer/Emerald Lake

Overview

Emerald Lake Campground offers a quintessential Montana mountain experience within the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Located at the foot of the dramatic Beartooth Mountains, this rustic destination provides a serene escape for travelers who prioritize scenery over luxury. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this park focuses on preserving the natural beauty of the West Rosebud area, offering a peaceful retreat where the sounds of the forest and nearby water dominate the landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Situated southwest of Fishtail, MT, the campground is reached via a scenic drive along West Rosebud Road. It sits nestled between Emerald Lake and West Rosebud Lake, surrounded by steep canyon walls and dense pine forests. The elevation provides cool mountain air even in the height of summer. The surrounding Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness creates a rugged backdrop that makes this location feel truly remote while still being accessible by road for most standard RV setups.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities here are basic but functional, designed to support a primitive camping experience. The park emphasizes the outdoors rather than digital connectivity. Key features include:

  • Vault toilets and seasonal potable water available via hand pumps.
  • Large fire rings and picnic tables at every individual site.
  • Access to lakeside recreation and boat launches within walking distance.

There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, so RVers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and empty waste tanks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the incredible access to outdoor recreation. The Mystic Lake Trailhead is just a short distance away, leading hikers to one of the most famous alpine lakes in the region. Anglers can enjoy fishing for trout in either of the two adjacent lakes or explore the rushing waters of West Rosebud Creek. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep their eyes peeled for moose, bears, and deer that frequently roam through the valley during the quiet morning hours.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy dry camping and want to immerse themselves in nature. It is best suited for those with smaller to mid-sized motorhomes or trailers, as the narrow roads and site lengths can be challenging for massive big rigs. If your travel style involves hiking, fishing, and stargazing away from the city lights, Emerald Lake provides the perfect high-altitude basecamp for your rugged Montana adventure.

Dirt road but easy to access without four wheel drive in the summer. Beautiful scenery and some good trout fishing for beginners.

This is our special place. We love hiking to mystic lake! The other two lakes are perfect for fishing or water activities. No camp host, but vaulted toilets are available.

The campground is small but sites offer good privacy. The campsites are clean and well maintained. Few campsites have river access. It’s a popular campground and fills up quickly. I saw some reviews mentioning that the last 14 miles of the road was very rough. I went in my Subaru Outback. The first 8 miles are pretty doable for any regular SUV. Where it gets really rough with potholes, washboard and rocks is the last 6 -7 miles of the road. It will be quite rough for an RV or a car but any vehicle will need to be careful in this section. There were roadwork in progress when I went and hopefully, the road might be better in the future.

Beautiful scenery, crystal clear water, abundant trout; what more could you ask for? Just a 2 hour drive from Billings, this is a must visit location. Take note that the drive up is EXTREMELY bumpy and slow going so don’t be in a hurry.

Had to turn around part of the way there, road was wayyyy too bumpy and put a hole in my tire. (Thank God for spares) Would recommend an off-road vehicle, Sonata could not make it!
