Custer/Woodbine

Overview

Woodbine Campground, part of the Custer Gallatin National Forest system, offers a peaceful retreat for travelers seeking a deep connection with the Montana wilderness. This scenic forest destination is situated along the banks of the Stillwater River, providing a serene backdrop of rushing water and towering lodgepole pines. It serves as a prime destination for those who prioritize natural beauty and outdoor recreation over modern commercial luxuries, making it a beloved stop for rugged RV travelers looking to experience the heart of the mountains.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled deep within the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness area near the small community of Nye, Montana. Its surroundings are defined by dramatic mountain peaks and dense forest canopies that provide exceptional natural privacy between the individual campsites. The high elevation creates a crisp alpine climate that is ideal for summer camping. Visitors are often treated to spectacular wildlife sightings, including frequent visits from deer, moose, and eagles that inhabit this remote and protected canyon landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service facility, the amenities focus on providing a functional base for exploring the great outdoors. The campground offers vault toilets and seasonal potable water, though guests should arrive prepared as there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available on-site. Each individual site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and fire ring for traditional campfire cooking and evening relaxation. The interior roads are paved, making the loop accessible for various vehicle types, including many standard-sized RVs and trailers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find an incredible array of activities directly accessible from their campsites. The Woodbine Falls Trail is a must-see 1.5-mile hike that leads visitors to a breathtaking 280-foot waterfall cascading down the rocky cliffs. Anglers often spend their days enjoying premier fly fishing on the Stillwater River, which is famous among locals for its clear water and trout population. For those seeking a longer journey, the nearby trail to Sioux Charley Lake offers a moderate trek into a pristine mountain basin.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideally suited for self-contained RV travelers who genuinely enjoy unplugging from the modern world to recharge in a rugged environment. It is a perfect fit for dedicated hikers, landscape photographers, and trout fishers who want immediate access to backcountry trails and riverbanks. If you value quiet evenings under a vast canopy of stars more than resort-style amenities, Custer/Woodbine provides the authentic, rustic Montana experience you are looking for.

Beautiful campground! Campsites are spread out enough and enough trees you don't feel too close to other campers. Next to some fun hikes. We will definitely return.

This is a beautiful rustic campground and has been a family favorite since I was a child. You can hike up to Woodbine Falls or up the Stillwater River through the Stillwater canyon about 3 miles to Sioux Charley Lake. The memories you take away will last a lifetime.

Love the peace & tranquility. Even Love the snow & rain. More than that, we love being among the 4-leggers, &.left the 2-leggers behind!!! Nothing like the great outdoors ❤

Awesome campground, hosts are friendly, place is kept clean, amazingly beautiful hikes. One incessantly barking little dog, not much to do about that...
