Dallas County Fair Campgrounds

Overview

The Dallas County Fair Campgrounds offers a functional and spacious stay for travelers passing through Central Iowa. Located on the northern edge of Adel, IA, this fairground facility serves as a reliable home base for those attending local events or exploring the scenic Raccoon River Valley. While it maintains the straightforward atmosphere of a public fairground, the property is characterized by its expansive green spaces and mature shade trees, offering a peaceful rural setting away from the noise of major highways.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just minutes from the historic brick-paved streets of downtown Adel, the park offers a convenient mix of small-town charm and easy accessibility. The campground is nestled within the Dallas County Fairgrounds, providing a quiet environment that feels tucked away while remaining within reach of modern conveniences. RVers will appreciate the proximity to the Raccoon River, which winds through the area and contributes to the lush agricultural landscape that defines this part of the Midwest.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed for practicality, offering various sites equipped with electrical hookups supporting both 30 and 50-amp service. Water hookups are available at many sites, and a centralized dump station is accessible on the grounds for convenience. The gravel pads are generally level and well-maintained to accommodate a range of rig sizes. During the main season, campers have access to restroom and shower facilities, ensuring the essentials are covered for a comfortable short-term or multi-night stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, as the park provides easy access to the Raccoon River Valley Trail, an 89-mile paved loop perfect for cycling, running, and hiking. Just a short drive away, the city of Adel features historic architecture and local dining options. For those seeking more urban excitement, the Des Moines metropolitan area is less than thirty minutes away, offering botanical gardens, museums, and major shopping districts while allowing you to return to a quiet campsite at night.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is an ideal fit for self-sufficient RVers who prefer a no-frills, quiet environment over a high-traffic resort. It is a fantastic choice for families attending regional horse shows or fair events, as well as cyclists looking to tackle the local trail systems. If you value affordability and space over luxury amenities like pools or clubhouses, the Dallas County Fair Campgrounds offers a genuine Iowa experience in a clean, welcoming setting.

Nice simple campground! Nothing fancy but great people, I have nothing but great things to say about the management! The only place I recommend staying in the area!

It's a cute little place. There's definitely not much room between campers to do a whole lot and very tight for campers to back in.

NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE OR EMAILS. It is run by volunteers no Host or staff. It is not for big Rigs, most sites are small and if you want to open your awning you would hit the neighbors door. We found it impossible to park our 42 ft. Finally gave up and left, no one to request a refund from as No one answers the phone. So we lost $210.00. Be aware that the sites are buddy sites so door to door.

We camped in site 35. It was supposed to have water and electric but we only had electric. (if it is there it is well hidden). Also it is right by an awesome fun pillow bounce trampoline. The campground kids liked the trampoline so much they kept going way after quiet hour. Also the position of the entrance of the fence for the bounce pad meant the kids had to walk over our power cord in the dark.

We stayed here for 2 weeks, and let me tell you. We had the most entertaining time at this park. We were in spot #19 - Right next to the bathrooms, and on the end. Most sites have hook ups on the wrong side of the spot. We pulled through and drove on the grass. It would have been impossible for us to back in our trailer with how tight it is when everyone is home and a ton of horse trailers and other trucks parked. When we arrived, the park was nasty. Full of full-timers who had their personal garbage spread throughout. But after a few days. They all packed up and left - it was so odd. However, there is one set of campers who just moved to another spot and like to go to the bathroom for 1 minutes and 10 seconds exactly every 20-35min. It is the strangest thing. So if you're parked in 19, be prepared for a lot of foot traffic. All in all, it was a beautiful park to walk around in. It was cool to see the fairgrounds empty and open. You're able to just walk through and see things. Park is very quiet during the week. Restrooms were "clean". They are old and could use a good paint job to freshen up and or a good pressure wash to get out the spider webs and what not. A little attention can go a long way to make things feel better even if a paint job couldn't happen. The water pressure here is out of this world. We have never been to a park with amazing water pressure.

Grumpy old man as the camp host was incredibly rude!! You really should not have someone in that position that clearly can't communicate with the public. Our site we originally reserved online we would never of fit in, both RVs on opposite sides and they had all their chairs and picnic tables where our site was suppose to go. Luckily there was other open spots and we were able to move. Sites very small and close together!

Pretty, peaceful. And the park is awesome for kids and young teens alike (huge bounce pad).

Visited for the gunshow that was held. Campgrounds were clearly labeled and marked. The grounds kept a good amount of cleanliness.

We have stayed here three times. The last two times we were greeted, without reservations, by Victoria who found a great 50 amp site for us on grass. Victoria is a real compliment to this campground. This campground is about 5 miles from I-80 with easy access. Well manicured and clean.
