Dannelly Lake - COE/Miller's Ferry

Overview

Millers Ferry Campground, situated along the expansive Dannelly Lake, offers a quintessential Army Corps of Engineers experience in the heart of Alabama. This facility is part of the William Bill Dannelly Reservoir, a massive 17,200-acre body of water created by the Millers Ferry Lock and Dam. Visitors often come here for the quiet, natural atmosphere and the opportunity to stay directly on the banks of the Alabama River, where the sunrise over the water provides a peaceful start to every morning.

Location & Surroundings

Located just northwest of the historic town of Camden, the park is nestled within the famous Black Belt region of Alabama. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and dense forests of mixed pine and hardwood that frame the riverbanks. Because it is situated in a rural area, the surroundings are exceptionally quiet, and the nights are dark enough to offer incredible stargazing opportunities. The nearby community of Camden provides a sense of Southern history that complements the park's rugged beauty.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features well-maintained sites, many of which provide waterfront views and direct access to the shoreline for fishing or small craft launching. Most sites are equipped with 50-amp electrical service and water hookups, accommodating a variety of RV sizes. Essential facilities include a dedicated fish cleaning station, which is a popular spot for the many anglers who visit, as well as a boat ramp, hot showers, and laundry facilities. For those traveling with children, the park offers a playground and several spacious picnic shelters.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is the primary draw here, as Dannelly Lake is widely considered one of the best spots in the state for largemouth bass and crappie. Boaters can explore the winding channels of the Alabama River or head to the nearby Roland Cooper State Park for additional hiking and birdwatching. History enthusiasts should take a short drive into downtown Camden to view the well-preserved antebellum architecture and explore local boutiques that highlight the unique cultural heritage of Wilcox County.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for avid anglers and nature lovers who prioritize a quiet, scenic environment over modern resort-style luxuries. It is perfectly suited for retirees looking for a peaceful seasonal stay or families who enjoy traditional outdoor activities like fishing and campfire cooking. If your travel style involves disconnecting from the digital world to enjoy Alabama’s riverfront beauty, Millers Ferry provides the perfect backdrop for a restorative and affordable RV getaway.

Love this Rec.gov campground! Have been 3 times, and are looking forward to going back! We have camped in a 16 foot Travel Trailer, and a 40ft, 5th Wheel. Sites are natural and have a fire pit, picnic table, water and electric hook-up, shepherds hook-up(dump station near exit), gated entrance, camp hosts, boat ramp area, playground, and bathhouse that had a washer & dryer. Very peaceful here, lots of boaters, and saw plenty of wildlife, including hummingbirds, eagles, owls, & gators. Definitely come prepared for yellow flies, ants and mosquitoes. Some sites have water view, and or water access. Several miles from town, but the drive to Camden is easy, with shops & restaurants, that have a quaint historic charm.

We had a nice time, and my dog loved looking at the birds. Didn't want to fish because of the alligator under the dock.

When Millers Ferry Marina closed years ago, I tried to use Millers Ferry Campground boat launch. They said I had to camp there to use it. No problem. But. they should consider charging $5 per launch.

Nice campsites, lots of shade and many are water front. We even had a pier. There are gators so watch your dogs. We caught catfish, a couple of different types of bream and a large carp right off of the little pier.

Miller’s Ferry Campground in was the perfect escape for our mother-daughter camping weekend! We stayed at site 65, right on the water, and it was everything we hoped for, peaceful, scenic, and incredibly well-kept. The campground host was amazing and made us feel completely safe and welcomed from the moment we arrived. Our site had a grill, picnic table, and the best part, a front-row view of the lake. We were bracing for ants and mosquitoes based on other reviews, but to our surprise, we didn’t see a single ant, and the mosquitoes only showed up after dark (as expected near water). Once we got the fire pit going, they left us alone completely. The area was great for walking, relaxing, and just soaking in the peace of nature. We loved watching the boats, fishing, and being completely unplugged from the world. It was the reset we didn’t know we needed. We’ll definitely be back to Miller’s Ferry—it’s a hidden gem!

This campground was well maintained and pretty. Almost all the camp sites are on the water, and some have their own pier. It's spread out to several areas, with beautiful oak trees with moss on them, a playground, and a bathhouse. Very southern.

We enjoyed our stay at Miller’s Ferry Campground. The site I booked online was much too far from a restroom/shower but the campground host was friendly and moved us to the campsite we requested. The campsites are spacious and well maintained. The ones on the water have beautiful views and ours even had a dock! There are only 2 restrooms/showers and they are very far away from a lot of the sites. The bathhouse we were close to, however, was kept very clean. The laundry was clean and only costs $1 each. We would give five stars if so many sites weren’t so far from restrooms/showers. We will come back.
