Daughers of the American Revolution (DAR) State Forest
Overview
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) State Forest offers a peaceful retreat located in the scenic hills of Western Massachusetts. Spanning over 1,700 acres, this park was originally a gift from the namesake organization and now serves as a prime destination for those seeking a quiet woodland escape. Visitors can enjoy the pristine waters of Highland Lake, which provides a stunning backdrop for the park’s many recreational activities and secluded campsites nestled within the forest.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the town of Goshen, MA, the park rests in the eastern foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense hardwood forests and rolling terrain that provides a sense of deep seclusion. Its location off Route 9 makes it accessible for travelers exploring the Pioneer Valley. The high elevation provides crisp mountain air and a cooler climate during the summer months, making it a refreshing stop for RVers.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features 51 campsites, many of which are suitable for smaller RVs and trailers looking for a rustic experience. While there are no electric or water hookups at the individual sites, a convenient dump station and fresh water fill-up stations are available for guest use. The facility includes modern bathhouses with hot showers and flushing toilets located within walking distance of the sites. Each spot is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, encouraging a traditional camping atmosphere.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Recreation is centered around the water, where visitors can enjoy swimming at the sandy beach or non-motorized boating. The park boasts an extensive trail system, including the popular DAR Trail, which is excellent for hiking and mountain biking. For a unique perspective of the region, the fire tower offers panoramic views that stretch across the Connecticut River Valley. Those seeking a bit of local culture can take a short drive to nearby Northampton for eclectic shopping and dining.
Who This Park Is Best For
This state forest is ideal for RVers who prefer boondocking-style camping and value natural beauty over commercial resort amenities. It is best suited for small to mid-sized rigs due to the narrow, winding park roads and the wooded nature of the site footprints. Families and solo travelers looking for a serene lakefront experience will find DAR State Forest to be a perfect destination for reconnecting with nature in a quiet, forested setting.

We feel so lucky to live close to this place. Both lakes are beautiful. We particularly love the Upper Highland Lake for kayaking and swimming. There are wonderful trails, some easy and a few with some modest elevation gain. The park is kept really clean. It has a wonderful feel where I think you can feel how happy people are to be there.

Beautiful lake, nice swimming beach with a life guard. They have pick neck tables and grills. The view from the fire tower is great, and I would love to see it in the fall.

Was my first time here. Not sure on the price to get in. If your over 65 yrs old you get in for FREE! it was a small beach but nice because it can only get "so busyy" . There's a boat ramp. No motor boats tho. There's a fishing spot too. There's also a camping area in back- I didn't see so no comments on that. They also have 2 to even 3 life guards on duty. I'd love to go again.

Very nice park. Beautiful pond/lake with beach. Hiked from parking area to fire tower. The trail is well marked with blue marks on trees. The trail is covered with tree roots, so you have to pay attention to where you walk. There is some incline here and there, especially the walk up to the fire tower. You can also drive up to the fire tower.

I was there camping twice. Not terribly private and you can hear everything. But the sites are very nicely kept. The bathrooms are very clean. The views of the lake are great; swimming and kayaking seem to be a great choice. Lots of hiking trails. They even have an accessible trail.
