This was SUCH a cool place to stay! Was looking for a Fall night away and did not know what to expect and it was AWESOME! We chose one of the A frames looking into the woods and the stream and it was beautiful! So private and cozy. We had s'mores and just enjoyed the cool night. We even heard a wolf howl! AMAZING! The room was warm and clean and so inviting, the bed was super comfy and we were right near the bathroom area which was SPOTLESS. The little camp store was perfect as we ended up needing firewood. None of the amenities were since it fall/winter but we didn't mind. We walked the desert and hiked the blue trail. Loved the fairy theme labyrinth and history walk. Such a COOL place! If I had kids I'd bring them in the summer for sure. It would be SO fun! The whole process from beginning to end was EFFORTLESS. The website link with all the info and times email notices made the entire experience simple and fun. Legit love it here and can't WAIT to come back!

I stayed 3 nights at site 18 in October 2025. It was absolutely perfect. There were plenty of towels and linens and warm blankets. The bath house is so clean and nice, and I wasn't freezing cold when I got out. The toilet in the cabin is in a little closet, just right but cold if you leave the door closed. The cabin is one large room and it feels so spacious and lovely. Plenty of privacy with the provided curtains, if you want it. Large bed was comfy and cozy. Chargers easy to use on built in shelf by the bed. Coffee and etc in the cabin was more than enough and made everything even lovelier. The heat pump over the bed was just right for me. I wasn't looking to rough it, I wanted to relax and I did. I liked it so much Im going to ask them about bringing a retreat there in 2026. Photos are spot on accurate. They owners are clearly hilarious and committed to quality. Well done.

We stayed in a Luxe tent for one night. My family and I loved the putt putt and the desert was unique. Our tent had plenty of room for our family of five with the three young kids sharing the pull out couch. We wish there had been an extra electric blanket to put on the pull out couch; it would have helped keep the kids a lot warmer. The wood burning stove helped to take the edge off of the chill, but we would have spend $100 on wood if we had stayed another night or two. The wood bundles come with a nylon rope handle stapled to them. My husband was not able to get the rope off of the piece of wood it was stapled to and threw it in the fire. It created so much smoke that we had to open all the windows and leave early. I would add a warning about burning those or maybe have some way for the handles to be removed easier. We would definitely stay again. The location was great.

My wife and I stayed in the tent at site 30 and had a great time! The tent was super cozy and well furnished. The bed was shockingly comfortable. The bath house was super clean. The self-service camp store had a nice variety of food, drink, and campfire-related items available to purchase. One thing to note for campers: the Desert of Maine is free to access after its normal operating hours. We walked right in around 8:00 am and got to explore for free.

We LOVED staying here! When camping we normally bring our tents, but we decided a 2 night stay somewhere it wasn't worth the hassle of our tents. We loved "camping" in the woods and having a fire pit but with a heated/air conditioned and full bathroom to call our own too. Everything was super clean and well maintained. We also really enjoyed the mini-golf and desert. Such a great find, thank you for building a luxury camping experience in a great location, we will be back for sure!

The little cabines are very nice, well equipped. It’s a nice experience to have with family or friends. The instructions are very clear, you can buy everything you need to do a fire as self service. I recommend 100% this place to experience something a bit different

My wife and I stayed here for one night and everything was so great. We were in cabin 18 and it was so clean and such a great design. Plenty of room for 2 people, this one has a small restroom area which was super handy. The bed was very comfortable and there were extra sheets and pillows if needed. The portable AC unit worked great and wasn't too loud. We walked across to the very convenient little Camp Store and grabbed some firewood and kindling at a very reasonable price. We built a nice fire and enjoyed the quiet evening. The main restroom and shower area is very clean and modern. There are also some fun outdoor games close by. Overall, we loved staying here and hope to come back next fall.

Writing this review 3 years late, but we had a wonderful experience at the Desert of Maine campgrounds. We came here in 2021 and was our first ever trip to Maine. Everything was super clean and very well organized. We wanted to go back, but to our dismay, there are no more standard tent sites like there used to be. We are not glampers and as much as we like cabins in the woods after spending a lot of money upgrading our camping gear, we wish there were more options for tenters like us. Either way, this place was wonderful and would certainly recommend to anyone. 20 minutes away from downtown Portland, and Freeport as a whole is a fun place to walk around with lots of shopping and of course the LL Bean flagship store.

We had an amazing time here! We stayed in cabin 26 which was secluded but also close to the clean bath house. We got engaged the day of our trip and the owners arranged a sweet gift for us. We loved our stay here. 10/10. We will remember this forever.

I stayed in a tent site here and loved it! I would love to be able to stay in an A frame cabin the next time. This is one of the most clean campgrounds I have ever been to. The bathrooms are gorgeous! They have a 24/7 snack shack that is open based on the honor system and it takes cards, which I loved. They had outdoor games that you could play like corn hole and the Dessert of Maine is right next door with ice cream and mini golf! Would love to stay here again!
