Dixie/Duck Creek
Overview
Duck Creek Campground, nestled within the stunning Dixie National Forest, offers a refreshing escape into the high-altitude landscapes of southern Utah. Located at an elevation of approximately 8,500 feet, this forest service park provides a cooler, shaded alternative to the intense desert heat found in nearby valleys. It serves as a central hub for those exploring the Markagunt Plateau, blending a rugged outdoor experience with the convenience of being near the small-town charm of Duck Creek Village. The park is defined by its towering ponderosa pines and its close proximity to shimmering alpine lakes.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly 30 miles east of Cedar City, UT, the park sits along the scenic Highway 14, which is famously known as the Markagunt High Plateau Scenic Byway. The surrounding environment is a lush tapestry of ancient volcanic lava flows, sprawling wildflower meadows, and dense evergreen forests. The crisp mountain air and the refreshing scent of pine define the travel experience here. Just a short distance away, Duck Creek Village provides essential services, local mountain dining, and a gateway to hundreds of miles of world-class motorized trail systems.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service facility, the focus here is on natural beauty and tranquility rather than resort-style luxuries. The campground features paved interior roads and parking spurs that can accommodate a variety of rig sizes, including many larger motorhomes. While there are no individual utility hookups, guests have access to the following:
- Potable water available at several shared spigots throughout the loops.
- A central dump station for convenient RV waste management.
- Spacious sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities to fill their days. The nearby Duck Creek Pond and Aspen-Mirror Lake are popular spots for trout fishing and peaceful morning walks through the trees. For those seeking subterranean adventure, the area is home to the fascinating Mammoth Cave, a large lava tube open for seasonal exploration. Furthermore, the park is a strategic basecamp for visiting Cedar Breaks National Monument, which offers stunning geological amphitheaters and high-altitude hiking trails just a short drive from the campground.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for travelers who prefer dry camping in a serene, natural setting rather than a paved commercial resort. It is particularly well-suited for OHV enthusiasts who want immediate access to the expansive backcountry trails and families looking for a traditional forest experience. If your travel style involves unplugging from the digital world to enjoy mountain biking, bird watching, and significantly cooler summer temperatures, this park is a perfect fit for your southern Utah itinerary.

We had a great stay! The campground is well-kept with clean restrooms, and the camp host was super friendly and welcoming. We loved the convenience of having a little town just 5 minutes away for anything we needed. We stayed in Loop A since Loops B and C are under renovation. The only downside was the traffic noise at night/day which can get a bit loud, but overall it was a very nice campground.

Campground and fishing are great! The camp hosts are always nice, too.

There was no water and most bathrooms were closed with no warning. The area is beautiful with lots of trails. We asked if we could have a fire as the rain died down and were told no because it was too dry. It had just rained for 12 hours.

Beautiful campground. We had no problem fitting our 30 foot travel trailer in our campsite. Access is easy from the main highway with the village of Duck Creek nearby. Cedar Breaks campground is less than 30 minutes away too. Restrooms are cleam and readily accessible.

This has been one our most favorite places we have been to camp since being in Vegas. Great people. Lots of close activities. Great fishing if you read the reports about how to fish.

Driving cross country with son. Doing tent site camping along the way. John, the host, was most accommodating. Makes you feel comfortable. Bathrooms are cleaned daily. Running water in bathrooms. No showers. Drinking water available. Sites are also clean,, and comfortable. Bring your own firewood. Close to parks, and endless activities. Would totally recommend 👌!
