Donner Memorial

Overview

Donner Memorial State Park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and profound American history. Situated in the heart of the Sierra Nevada, the park commemorates the mid-19th-century pioneers who crossed these rugged mountains. Visitors can explore the Pioneer Monument and a modern visitor center while enjoying a classic mountain camping experience. It serves as a peaceful retreat where the history of the Donner Party meets the serenity of high-altitude forests and alpine waters.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled at an elevation of nearly 6,000 feet, the park is located just west of the charming mountain town of Truckee, California. The landscape is defined by towering Jeffrey pines, massive granite boulders, and the crystal-clear waters of Donner Lake. Its proximity to Interstate 80 makes it incredibly accessible for travelers, yet the dense forest provides a natural buffer that maintains a quiet, secluded atmosphere. The surrounding peaks offer a dramatic backdrop for morning coffee or evening strolls.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic camping destination that emphasizes a direct connection with nature. The park features three developed campgrounds—Ridge, Creek, and Pine Ridge—offering over 150 campsites. While there are no hookups for RVs, the park provides essential facilities including restrooms with flush toilets and coin-operated showers. Each site includes a picnic table, a fire ring, and a bear-resistant food locker. A sanitary dump station and potable water are available on-site for RV convenience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless activities within and just outside the park boundaries. You can spend the day boating or fishing on Donner Lake, which features a public boat ramp and designated swimming areas. The park contains miles of hiking and biking trails that provide stunning overlooks of the water. Just a short drive away, you can explore Historic Downtown Truckee for local dining, or head to the world-class ski resorts and beaches of the North Lake Tahoe area.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for history buffs and nature lovers who prefer a traditional, dry camping experience over a commercial resort. Because of the tighter turns and specific site dimensions, it is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs and camper vans rather than large Class A rigs. It is a perfect choice for families seeking an educational trip or travelers looking for a scenic, dog-friendly basecamp to explore the northern Sierra Nevada region.

Great museum, that focuses on the attempted crossing by a group of settlers known as the Donner party attempted to cross in November 1846. Their story is tragic and yet awe inspiring. I thoroughly recommend you spend some time here, watch the film and explore the well laid out museum. You will not be disappointed. I cycled there from Truckee using the cycle route and went on to the beautiful Donner Lake.

It’s pretty cool they got some beautiful trees, huge trees, huge pinecones little museum bathrooms. They have something that you can pay to go through, but I’m not sure what it is nor am I actually interested in it cause I’m interested in the shower at my daughter.

Fantastic place. I only had a few minutes to check it out, and I am definitely coming back in a couple weeks to take my time and enjoy all the exhibits. Everybody was friendly.

It's really great to hear the story of the Donner party. If you haven't heard it before and seen all the details. This is a nice little museum and Park. Make sure you pay the parking fee right away and put the ticket in your dash or you will get a ticket.

The museum was very educational. I learned a lot about what they went through, unbelievable. They have the museum set up very nicely. On the outside, the trails are very wide and flat and easy to walk on for all ages. They have ponds on the trail, too. I highly recommend going.

This is a state park with camping spots near Donner Lake. This is also the memorial for the infamous Donner party who got stuck in a massive snowstorm. The memorial itself has some good details on what happened, but the impressive part is the top of the pedestal. This represents the snowfall that year, which was 22 feet. It is insane to think about now with California's record droughts. There is also a walk through exhibit that showcases the unfortunate events of the Donner party but also other facts about Donner Lake and the transcontinental rail road.

Very informative museum and visitor center. Entrance is free, parking 5 Dollar. You can whatch a movie about the area and the exhibits are really impressive, as is the dramatic and tragic story about the Donner Party, the settlers, who got stuck on this pass for month and suffered great loss. The monument near by is dedicated to the pioneers, their courage and bravery. There is also a very good and large gift shop.
