Dungeness Rec Area

Overview

Dungeness Recreation Area is a premier 216-acre destination perched on a high bluff overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Managed by Clallam County, this park offers a serene coastal experience that balances rugged natural beauty with well-maintained camping facilities. It serves as the primary gateway to some of the most unique geological features in the Pacific Northwest, making it a staple for travelers exploring the Olympic Peninsula. This area is widely recognized as a sanctuary for diverse bird species and a quiet refuge for those escaping the city.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of the city of Sequim, Washington, the park benefits significantly from the Olympic Rain Shadow, often receiving more sunshine than the rest of the peninsula. The park is surrounded by a mix of coastal forest and open meadow, sitting directly adjacent to the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge. Guests are treated to sweeping views of the saltwater, the distant lighthouse, and the majestic mountains of British Columbia across the water.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 66 well-maintained campsites, many of which provide electric and water hookups for modern RVs. While individual sewer connections are not provided, a centrally located dump station makes waste management easy for guests. Key features of the park include:

  • Modern restrooms and coin-operated showers
  • Dedicated playground area for children
  • Covered picnic shelters for group gatherings
  • Direct access to scenic coastal hiking trails

Sites are thoughtfully spaced among mature Douglas firs, providing excellent privacy and a natural forest canopy that protects against the coastal wind.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The centerpiece of the area is the Dungeness Spit, a natural sand hook perfect for long walks toward the historic lighthouse. Beyond the spit, visitors can explore the nearby Olympic National Park, specifically the stunning vistas of Hurricane Ridge. During the summer, the local lavender farms in Sequim are a must-see, while the park’s own extensive trail system offers miles of hiking with incredible opportunities for birdwatching and eagle spotting.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature-focused travelers and families who prioritize scenery and quietude over commercial resort luxuries. It is perfectly suited for RVers who enjoy coastal hiking and the rhythmic sounds of the ocean. Those seeking a basecamp for exploring the north side of the Olympic Peninsula will find this park to be a peaceful and accessible choice for both short stays and extended maritime adventures.

The spit is wonderful to explore…as are the trails = 5 stars. My 3 star review is for the campground. Shortly after our arrival a maintenance person was blowing the gravel road the meanders through the campground with an obnoxiously loud gas blower…blowing nothing but dirt and sand into the air and leaving a stinky trail of gasoline smell behind him. This went on for at least an hour. Why the heck do you need to blow an already tidy gravel road at a campground?? I’d bet most campers would rather see a few leaves on the gravel road than have to listen to and smell a gas blower. So much for communing with nature in peace. The sites were raked and litter free and the restroom was clean.

The most grueling but rewarding 11 mile hike I’ve been on! The sound of the rocks running along on one another when the tides come in was phenomenal. The weather was perfect but if you’re committing to the total trek across the spit to the lighthouse, dress in layers! I warmed up pretty quickly as every muscle in my body heated up from walking up and down sand, rock and drift wood. I would highly recommend this for family trips but keeping it to a quarter or maybe even a half mile walk. The further you go out, the further you must walk back :)

Stopped here to take pictures of the sunset not the best pictures because of low clouds in the distance. We will be back to the dungeness recreation area next year and we will be camping Alot of places to tent camp and trailer camp. This is also a great place to see The sunset if it's not cloudy.

Dungeness Recreation Area was absolutely beautiful. The trail to the bluff overlooks was peaceful and scenic, with views of the blue ocean stretching out endlessly. The coastline is dramatic and stunning, and the walk itself is gentle but rewarding. There were so many seagulls around, and I even spotted a Heron such a lovely surprise for a casual hike. It felt calm, quiet, and connected to nature the entire time. This is a perfect stop if you’re in the Port Angeles area and want an easy hike with gorgeous views and wildlife. I loved it and would definitely go back!

We really liked this campground and wished to stay a little bit longer. The showers are super large with an extra area to hang/place your clothes. Toilets are clean and plenty. The campground is situated in a beautiful forest. There are many campers but you get your individual space that is quite big. The Salish Sea view overlooking Canada was pretty breathtaking.
