Fairview-Riverside

Overview

Fairview-Riverside State Park offers a serene retreat set against the scenic backdrop of the Tchefuncte River. This 99-acre park is widely recognized for its historic moss-draped oaks and lush coastal scenery, providing a quintessential Louisiana outdoor experience. Unlike high-traffic commercial resorts, this park emphasizes natural beauty and historical preservation, anchored by the presence of the Otis House Museum. It serves as an ideal sanctuary for travelers seeking a quiet escape that remains within a short drive of local urban conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside the charming town of Madisonville, the park sits directly along the banks of the Tchefuncte River. The landscape is defined by sprawling wetlands and hardwood forests that offer a canopy of shade for campers. Visitors can enjoy the gentle breezes moving off Lake Pontchartrain, which is located just a few miles downstream. The surrounding area maintains a small-town maritime atmosphere, where local boutiques and waterfront seafood restaurants are easily accessible from the park gates.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 81 campsites equipped with water and electrical hookups, accommodating various rig sizes with both back-in and pull-through options. Guests have access to well-maintained bathhouses with hot showers and on-site laundry facilities for convenience. A centrally located dump station is available for departing RVers. For recreation, the park provides a boat launch for direct river access, multiple picnic pavilions, and a playground. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the boardwalks and trails that wind through the cypress-tupelo swamp.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Boating and fishing are the primary draws, with the river offering excellent opportunities for catching bass and perch. History buffs should prioritize a tour of the Otis House Museum, a late 19th-century residence located on the park grounds. A short drive away, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum offers deep insight into the region's seafaring heritage. For a major day trip, the nearby Causeway bridge provides a direct route to the world-renowned culture and dining of New Orleans.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is a premier choice for nature photographers and birdwatchers looking to capture Louisiana's unique ecosystems. It appeals strongly to families seeking a relaxed, safe camping environment with plenty of space to explore. Because the park offers a blend of quiet wooded sites and easy water access, it is a favorite for kayakers and anglers. RVers who prefer scenic, state-managed parks over densely packed commercial lots will find the atmosphere here particularly authentic.

Beautiful State Park on the Tchefuncta River in Louisiana. Walking trails, fishing boat launch area open for day passes or RV sites. Be advised there are only 6 sites available with sewer hook ups although there is a dump station on your way out.

We absolutely love this park. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The river front is so beautiful. We had the luxury to be there in the snow and were blown away

Best park in all of Lousiana. Peaceful, majestic, clean, historical, with gorgeous views and great RV spots. It has a boat ramp that feeds in to the Tchefuncte River as well. The Pavillion near Otis House is perfect for large events or birthdays with plenty of parking, tables, grills, clean bathrooms and surrounded by massive movie-esque oak trees. The staff at the park are obviously very passionate about their jobs. Morgan is the new manager and has the park looking better than ever with tons of plans for the future. The ladies at the front office & the camp host Chris couldn't be more friendly or helpful and seem to know everyone who visits by name. The maintenance guy must never stop working because the park is in immaculate condition every time we visit. Overall this park is one of the best we've stayed at and continues to get better every time we return!

A very nice quiet campground. Nice walking pier, I would say fishing pier but since its not a "no wake zone" everyone flying by sending swells up over the pier and causing a horrible fishing spot. The spot by Otis house is a better option for fishing since it is right at the beginning of a dead slow zone. Cute little board walk through a "swamp" just edge of river that's overgrown. The pond by Otis house is completely overgrown and can't even see the water any more. The absolute worst part is the mosquitoes. They are so relentless even with deep woods spray and a roaring fire they are tearing us up with no relief other than to stay inside. The mosquito truck wouldn't spray by us only away from camps pushing the mosquitoes deeper in the camp spots. And making it just unbearable. This would be a much better winter camp spot. Or bring some type of barrier against the flying demons.

A Quiet Gem on the Tchefuncte River Howdy, GenX Glamping Guy here with a review of the Fairview-Riverside State Park. I kicked off 2025 with a peaceful weekend at Fairview-Riverside State Park and couldn’t have asked for a better quick getaway. My site near the boat launch, tucked along the banks of the Tchefuncte River, was quiet and serene — perfect for relaxing and reconnecting with nature. The sunsets were breathtaking, and the clear January skies offered a magical display of stars at night. Live Oaks draped in moss gave the whole area an almost mystical vibe. One of the highlights was a walk along the park’s boardwalk, floating above a bed of lily pads. I even took time to film a video about instant coffee — because, why not? [Video] Instant Coffee: See on YouTube @GenXGlampingGuy Exploring deeper into the park, I discovered a hidden gem: a mini outdoor theatre set under a massive Oak tree. I couldn’t resist doing a little impromptu Shakespeare performance with no one around. [Video] Me Performing Shakespeare: See on YouTube @GenXGlampingGuy Later, I stumbled upon a peaceful, swampy inlet dotted with cypress stumps — a perfect hidden corner to sit quietly and take in the surroundings. I captured a timelapse of the sunset over the river, and it did not disappoint. Whether you're into quiet nature walks, riverside views, or just need a spot to reflect and reset, this place is a gem. Highly recommend it, especially if you appreciate the slower, quieter moments. Tim @GenXGlampingGuy on YouTube

Clean and well maintained. Someone was working late until 8 pm to check in. At the dump they have a soap dispenser that was great. Access with a RV even small is not easy on some of the roads, they should clear a few trees because the turns are too sharp. We could walk to the swamp and enjoy the view. The facilities look new. New piers. New grass. Signs and lot numbers are not easy to see at night. Most campsites are too close to each other and not well defined. We could hear the conversation of our neighbors! For a state park campground it’s not great. Our campsite wasn’t very long, so it wasn’t possible to leave the car in front of the trailer even if the trailer is small and there isn’t a lot of space to park next to it without parking on the road. Some big dogs were running around unleashed, not good for the safety of children or smaller dogs. They obviously don’t enforce the leash policy. Improvements should be made to make it a perfect campground.

Loved this park. Great spot to camp. We were at 79 straight across from the shower house. Loved having the laundry in the park. $1.75 for washing and drying. We loved kayaking the river. Plenty of birds and turtles. There’s a short boardwalk through the swamp. Great place to stay for Mardi Gras!

$3 day ticket entry is good value (and any concessions, like active duty military, get a great discount to $1.50 plus a free guest). There's very pretty short walks here and a beautiful riverside campground, picnic area, and nice clean toilets. Saw lots of wildlife on the swamp boardwalk and watched the boats go by from the riverbank. Recommended

Small state park campground with some nice amenities for a decent price. Campground Description: This campground has 82 sites, all back in, set in rows of camping sites set alongside the Tchefuncte River. Campsite #59 We had an asphalt pad, back in. The pad was long enough for us to back in without disconnecting, but the pad had some pretty large potholes and ruts that could cause it to be unlevel. We had 50 & 30 #thifty and water, but no sewer. There is a dump station available. We had a picnic table, a fire ring, and a grill. No propane refill here at the park. Wifi: Surprisingly this state park not only has wifi, but it’s fast and has good coverage. Starlink and Verizon did okay. Not all services are available here according to the website. Noise and Stargazing Level: Pretty quiet especially with how close it was to town. There was a distant hum of road noise. Also it had low light pollution which made for some good stargazing. Amenities: Nice bathhouse with 3 individual bathrooms for men and 3 more for women. Each had its own entrance complete with bathroom, sink, and shower. Dumpster easily located across from the dump station. Laundry: nice perk at a state park. It had 2 washers and 2 dryers. $1.75 to wash or dry. They had a laundry sink, soap vending machine, and it took quarters or an app. No pool, but they have a nice, big playground. Other facilities: They have a boat ramp and have fishing, hiking trails, and several museums close by. They also offer boating adventures. Dog friendly: No off-leash areas for your dogs and they had several pickup station, unfortunately none of them were stocked. Camp store: No camp store but a soda vending machine at the bathhouse. Piggly Wiggly about 2 miles away. Walmart about 6 miles away. Amazon Locker: Amazon Counter at Whole Foods Market in Mandeville, LA about 4 miles away. Camp staff interactions: Both Mary and Berta? Were super friendly and helpful. Reservation process: They have a reservation website, but even thought they had availability, we had to call and process the reservation over the phone. Additional info: 14-day max stay limit and then out of the park for 7 days. Cost $34/night Value: This is not horrible, other campgrounds with similar amenities around the same price have had nicer camping pads and this one is in need of resurfacing.

The smaller camping loop is quieter with nice views of the river and access to the Swamp Trail plus a boat launch if you have something to paddle. Bathrooms are very clean but when we were there Jan 27 thru 31 there was no water pressure at showers and only temp was scalding hot.
