FD Roosevelt
Overview
F.D. Roosevelt State Park is Georgia’s largest state park, offering over 9,000 acres of scenic beauty in Pine Mountain. Named after the president who frequently visited the area for therapy in the nearby springs, this park combines rich history with diverse recreational opportunities. It serves as a premier destination for RVers looking to explore the Pine Mountain Ridge while enjoying a well-preserved natural environment. This park captures the spirit of the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps and provides a serene escape from the bustle of modern life.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the rolling hills of southwest Georgia, the park is conveniently located near the town of Pine Mountain. The landscape is defined by its unexpected elevation, providing sweeping views of the valley below from spots like Dowdell’s Knob. The surroundings are a mix of dense hardwood forests and pine stands, creating a cool, shaded environment for travelers. Its proximity to Atlanta makes it a popular weekend getaway for those seeking a wooded retreat without driving deep into the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Amenities & Park Features
The park offers more than 100 campsites equipped with water and electric hookups, accommodating various RV sizes. Facilities include clean bathhouses, laundry areas, and a dump station for convenience. A standout feature is the historic Liberty Bell Pool, a spring-fed swimming hole built during the Depression era that remains a favorite for summer visitors. For those who enjoy activities on the water, Lake Delano and Lake Franklin offer peaceful spots for fishing or boat rentals. The Trading Post serves as a central hub for supplies and local information.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors are just a short drive from the world-renowned Callaway Gardens, famous for its butterfly center and botanical displays. History enthusiasts should not miss the Little White House in Warm Springs, where President Roosevelt resided. Within the park itself, the Pine Mountain Trail stretches over 23 miles, offering some of the best hiking in the region. Whether you are interested in birdwatching, horseback riding, or exploring local wildlife, there is a diverse range of activities available just minutes from your campsite.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for history buffs who appreciate the legacy of the New Deal and the Great Depression. Families will find plenty of space and activities to keep children engaged, while nature lovers will value the extensive trail system and quiet lakefronts. It is best suited for those who prefer the rustic charm of a state park over the high-density environment of a commercial RV resort. If you enjoy wide-open spaces and historic landmarks, this Georgia gem is a perfect addition to your travel itinerary.

Came with a group of little kids. Very nice experience. We stayed in the group cabin camping area. There are also areas for tent camping and rv camping. Very large park with eough space for privacy. There is electricity In the cabins. Very spacious for large groups. 6 different large cabins with 10 beds in each, there is also a smaller one for a couple or 2. Dinning hall with everything thing you need to prepare full course meals. Just bring your food. Bath hall is separated. One side for men one for ladies each has 5 showers and 4 toliets, and the water gets hot. Lots of open grass great for kids, there is even a fire pit. They also have a Olympic size pool but it was closed because Georgia law require pools to be closed from labor to memorial day. 4 stars because there were lots of spiders in the cabins I know it's outside but it was overwhelming. The archery class doesn't exist anymore, the lake was contaminated so we couldn't canoe, and the maps were not very helpful for people new to the out door world. Other then that I definitely recommend. This was a great an memorable experience!

Absolutely stunning views of the mountains and valleys. Lots of trails to hike. Beautiful cabins to rent. There's a cute store with lots of resonably priced souvenirs. Calaway store down the street has some of the same almost double price!sl Staff is friendly and outgoing.

Our family went for a short weekend and decided to stay an extra night due to how much we enjoyed the site/area. We had a rattlesnake show up, not looking to leave, so we called the park rangers to remove it. They did so without any issues and were very nice and helpful about it all. Said it's a pretty rare occurrence. Our daughter had fun catching fireflies and spotting wildlife. We also spent some time at the beautiful pool as well.

We have had such an amazing long weekend here I don’t even know where to start with the review! We stayed at 2 different sites in section 6 & they were both great. I would definitely not book in 2,3 or 5 if you’re tent camping bc it just feels like it far away from everything. The bathroom & shower area are exceptionally clean for a camping site. There was no hair in the shower or any real filth at all. I was super impressed with that & im very picky. Water was HOT! It was awesome. We hiked the two smaller trails & had a great time. Both were gorgeous & our family of 5 loved it. The highlight of our trip was def renting a canoe & kayak. We had a fun few hours fishing from the water & just soaking up the sun. I would say the canoes & boats need to be cleaned a little better though. My daughter ended up having a spider on her head & we had to clean it off a good bit before getting into them. But we had the best time paddling around. The park rangers were riding around & making sure everyone was safe, we liked that. I was surprised by how nice everyone followed the 10 pm quiet rule. everyone turns there lights off sharp & we had no noise problems at all . A big shout out to the main gift shop area. The older black lady was SO nice to us. Made us feel right at home & we appreciated her hospitality. The little book station outside the smaller shop was cute and we exchanged a few books during our trip! Was nice to have a playground close by! We went to the liberty bell pool on Saturday & we won’t return. It was pretty historically but the people there were not our type & so loud and obnoxious. Our kids even commented they wanted to leave because of it & they’re 4 & 6. We felt very uncomfortable & the pool water was FILTHY. We were very surprised by the high reviews there. Overall, this was a perfect 3 night stay & we will absolutely be returning here.

My wife and I spent a weekend at F.D. Roosevelt State Park, and honestly, we didn’t want to leave. If you’re into hiking, this place is an absolute dream. We hiked the Mountain Creek Loop Trail and loved every step of it. It’s just the right mix of peaceful woods, steady climbs, and surprise views that sneak up on you. The trail winds through shady forest, over small creeks, and past spots where the light filters in just right—like nature knew we were coming. And then there’s Dowdell’s Knob. We drove up after our hike, and wow. You’re standing way up above the hills, looking out over layer after layer of Georgia’s green countryside stretching into the haze. It feels like the kind of place where your thoughts can finally catch up with you—in a good way. Bring good shoes, your favorite person, and a camera. You’ll want to remember how it felt to walk those trails and stand at the edge of that view, just breathing it all in.

FD Roosevelt State Park is Georgia's largest State Park. 9k+ acres, 40+ miles of hiking trails, including the well known 23 mile Pine Mountain Trail. Many amenities were built by the CCC, (Civilian Conservation Corps). The office/check-in building is a step back in time to the Depression era to see the craftsmanship of the CCC. The Look Out at the office is a must see. The campground is another story. The sites in section 2, 3 & 5 are unmanaged and in need of serious refresh and water management. Our site, 202 which is on an elevated spot, was under water when we arrived and stayed underwater for our 4 day visit. The water runoff pours directly through the site and under your camper. Many sites in the park remained swampy for the 4 days we were there. The State's answer is to just add larger crusher run. That is no fun even if you have a ground mat to lay down! The turns in the roads are treacherous with many having a sharp turn and no supporting shoulder. The sidewalk in section 1 has caved in and is dangerous. There is an ever present Camp Host/Team driving up and down the roads in John Deere Gators. The bath house by the playground is past time for a makeover. While the team keeps it clean and maintained, the facilities are dated and worn down. If we were to camp here again, we would only select a site in section 1- some are tent/small trailer only. The Trading Post has limited hours and is not well stocked. The Main Camp office is your destination for supplies or you can just drive a few miles down the road to Pine Mountain for most anything you need. Georgia State Parks are some of the best in the Country but FDR SP is not one they should be proud of.

Very nice park with all sorts of amenities built by the CCC in the 1930s. Has horse riding, archery areas, endless hiking trails, swimming, camping, and many other things. Clean Campground, good sites with fresh water and electricity, primitive camping available. Near FDR White House and Warm Springs

We had an Amazing time at our first visit here! We stayed at the campground site 111, and not only was it extremely peaceful, the Park Ranger and Camp Host were making rounds throughout the whole weekend! We felt very safe and enjoyed our interactions with the current camp host! Our son, who is 15, fished the lake, unfortunately, with no luck, just about every minute we were there! He was determined to catch the catfish to win the prize posted at the camp store! The game warden stopped by and checked on him out of distance from mom and dad and tried to slip him up on his fishing regulations and age limit but our fishing boy knew his laws (go mom and dad)! We will be back and look forward to doing so! Oh, and the comfort station was at 110% cleanliness!! Hot shower and clean, what more could you ask for?!!!
